Gregory Porter on Tour
With his rich baritone voice and his mastery of the deepest traditions of soul, jazz and gospel, Gregory Porter has established himself as one of America's most versatile and acclaimed vocalists. His artistry and sensitivity is plain to the ear whether he's putting his stamp on beloved standards by heroes like Nat "King" Cole or demonstrating his own writing talents with original songs strong enough to stand with the many classics in his repertoire.
Produced by Troy Miller (Jamie Cullum, Laura Mvula), All Rise is Porter's sixth studio album and fourth for the iconic Blue Note label. Like his 2013 breakthrough Liquid Spirit — the Grammy Award winner for Best Jazz Vocal Album — Porter's latest is a confident display of his many gifts, starting with his ability to convey feelings of both exaltation and sadness with uncommon directness and warmth.
Selling out venues to capacity, like Warner Theatre (Washington, D.C.), as engaging and charismatic onstage as he is on his recordings, Porter performs in support of All Rise throughout 2020 in venues across the U.S. and Europe.
Gregory Porter in Concert
Though Gregory Porter has been widely heralded as one of the premier male vocalists in contemporary jazz, his roots in soul and gospel are just as deep. Raised in Bakersfield, California, he got his start in music singing in the church where his mother was a minister. After a promising athletic career was cut short by an injury, he came to New York in 2004 and began building his profile through appearances and residencies at clubs in Brooklyn and Harlem. Porter's albums for the Motéma label — Water (2010) and Be Good (2012) — introduced listeners to a remarkable talent whose baritone voice maintained his warmth and richness regardless of the style and setting. His first album for Blue Note, Liquid Spirit (2013), marked a wider breakthrough on both sides of the Atlantic, winning Porter his first Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album and reaching the Top 10 on the UK charts. In 2017, Porter released Nat King Cole & Me (2017), a collection of songs recorded and inspired by his lifelong idol. His sixth studio album, All Rise, is released in the spring of 2020, with Porter performing new dates in the U.S. and Europe.

There was no way I'd miss seeing Gregory Porter if he came to DC.I first saw him live at the DC Jazz festival in Spring. If there was a show tomorrow I'd go! Congratulations to the organisers for getting him to the Howard Theater! Mr Porter and his band are great musicians; they deliver the song like they believe in its meaning. They relate very well together on the stage and bandstand. The songs are about important political milestones, the history of music in America, about family and about good citizenship. I don't think there's a male voice to beat Gregory Porter in his genre currently. He is just it! The Howard Theater was a good choice to accommodate volumes - a smaller venue wouldn't have worked. I loved every second of the show! Please bring him back!
I saw Gregory Porter at the Library of Congress earlier this year and couldn't get enough. This show was even better. Gregory Porter sounds just as good live as he does on record. I will definitely go to see him any time I can.
It's difficult to express how great Mr. Porter was. He had the audience engaged throughout and let his incredible voice take the audience away. The band was beyond incredible. The saxophonist in particular blew me away. Nothing, however, could take the spotlight from Gregory Porter. An excellent performer and wonderful night!
Gregory Porter is an artist I was introduced to a year ago. This is my first live performance. The venue size was perfect-no too large and gave an intimate setting. The performance lasted about 90 minutes and Gregory was available afterwards for CD signings. I look forward to seeing back in DC sometime in 2015.
This was my first time at the Howard Theater. I don't know how I missed this gem all of these years I've been visiting DC. The place was great. Food good. The waiters/waitresses unseasoned and in need of training, but they were polite. Gregory Porter draws the crowd wherever I have seen him. Everyone knew his music and were not hesitant to sing along and clap and generally join into the party. Band was tight and exciting. saxophone player was phenomenal and hypnotic. The crowd felt like family. Gregory was able to captivate and mesmerize the audience with his warm, melodic, deep, and powerful voice. I would travel across foreign waters to hear this man again. Seriously!
Excellent!!!! Gregory Porter Is an amazing talent.
I go out often and this was one of the best concerts I have been too. Gregory Porter is so smooth, personable and that voice is
Took my boyfriend for our anniversary. Surprised him with tickets to see our favorite song live. Gregory did not disappoint. He was energetic, passionate and engaging. His band is superb and the playlist was incredible. Howard theater was great, sit down dinner and theater setting. I would even see the show over again
Got to the venue closer to 8 expecting to find. Gen admission long line and cramped standing room. Instead we were seated at a table in front row directly below the stage. The venue felt like true old jazz club, perfect setting for Gregory Porter. His performance was one of the best live performances I've seen. Amazing voice and great stage presence. His band mates make you believe real music still has a chance.
Incredible venue to see the most accomplished new jazz voice around. My wife and I had an incredible time. The seats are comfortable, it is a small and intimate venue, and Gregory Porter's Quartet was on point! I will not miss them anytime I have the opportunity to see them play again.
Gregory Porter and his quartet, as expected, put on a wonderful show this past Saturday at the Coolidge in the Library of Congress building. The acoustics, however, left something to be desired. I realize that the building is very old, but I believe something could have been done to improve the sound. I would also like to add that the saxophonist, though very talented, was overly featured during many songs and at times completely drowned out Mr. Porter. Otherwise, a delightful evening!
Gregory Porter's music is amazing. His voice is incredible and soul stirring. I absolute love this man! His quartet is so talented, they are so in tuned to each other. This was my second time seeing Gregory perforn and I enjoyed it as much as the first time. If you've never heard his music you are missing out on something special. I will see him over and over and over again!
Gregory Porter gave a performance that was intoxicating. A must see for ANY music lover.
This concert was phenomenal! Gregoory Porter is an extraordiinarily gifted singer,, songwriter and entertainer, and his band (especially sax and piano players) are equally gifted. What a wonderful evening of music!
The show was incredible! Gregory Porter Quartet knows how to entertain with sophistication and without being too planned out.
Porter is a phenomenal. What was most impressive is that he sounds just as good live as he does on record. His demeanor is warm, humble, and genuine. His band is phenomenal and truly look as if they enjoy every moment of what they do.
Gregory Porter was great ! I am new to his sound and my first time seeing him. Nothing but standing ovations throughout the performances. CON: The theater was very nice but the acoustics in the room was not so good.
This was a must see! Gregory Porter is a superb artist!
I've been a fan of Mr. Porter's for some time and this was my first time seeing him perform live. From his opening number, "Painted on Canvas" until the encore he and his band shone brightly. If you love great music, lyricism and a good time...catch a live performance of the Gregory Porter Quartet. You won't be disappointed.
