About

Gregory Porter on Tour

With his rich baritone voice and his mastery of the deepest traditions of soul, jazz and gospel, Gregory Porter has established himself as one of America's most versatile and acclaimed vocalists. His artistry and sensitivity is plain to the ear whether he's putting his stamp on beloved standards by heroes like Nat "King" Cole or demonstrating his own writing talents with original songs strong enough to stand with the many classics in his repertoire.

Produced by Troy Miller (Jamie Cullum, Laura Mvula), All Rise is Porter's sixth studio album and fourth for the iconic Blue Note label. Like his 2013 breakthrough Liquid Spirit — the Grammy Award winner for Best Jazz Vocal Album — Porter's latest is a confident display of his many gifts, starting with his ability to convey feelings of both exaltation and sadness with uncommon directness and warmth.

Selling out venues to capacity, like Warner Theatre (Washington, D.C.), as engaging and charismatic onstage as he is on his recordings, Porter performs in support of All Rise throughout 2020 in venues across the U.S. and Europe.

Gregory Porter in Concert

Though Gregory Porter has been widely heralded as one of the premier male vocalists in contemporary jazz, his roots in soul and gospel are just as deep. Raised in Bakersfield, California, he got his start in music singing in the church where his mother was a minister. After a promising athletic career was cut short by an injury, he came to New York in 2004 and began building his profile through appearances and residencies at clubs in Brooklyn and Harlem. Porter's albums for the Motéma label — Water (2010) and Be Good (2012) — introduced listeners to a remarkable talent whose baritone voice maintained his warmth and richness regardless of the style and setting. His first album for Blue Note, Liquid Spirit (2013), marked a wider breakthrough on both sides of the Atlantic, winning Porter his first Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album and reaching the Top 10 on the UK charts. In 2017, Porter released Nat King Cole & Me (2017), a collection of songs recorded and inspired by his lifelong idol. His sixth studio album, All Rise, is released in the spring of 2020, with Porter performing new dates in the U.S. and Europe.

Lovely event and lovely venue at Royce Hall. Gregory Porter's voice is sublime and the musicians were excellent. Only tip is to arrive in plenty of time to park, pay for parking and walk over to the Hall. It can easily add up to 15 to 20 minutes and you might have to wait outside for a break in the show to be seated if you're late. He was the only performer for a 90 minute show and that was okay because I went specifically to see him. It was a great show!

The concert was excellent. I love how the musicians are featured on each song. Loved the piano player. I have wanted an opportunity to see Gregory Porter alone. I was not disappointed. His beautiful voice pours over you like velvet.

Unlike the SOLD OUT crowd that was present, we had never seen or for that matter even heard of Gregory Porter. What an amazing and gifted young man. He has a charming and engaging personality, and his voice is like velvet, soothing on the soul and easy on the mind. Would love to go see him over and over as well as buy his music.

  • Gregory Porter in a word-----AWESOME!

by ChiefCDC on 12/23/14Jo Long Theatre - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

Heard my first Gregory Porter tune a year ago and have been hooked every since. Almost flew from San Antonio to Charlotte NC earlier in the year to see him since he was not booked here. I was patient and it paid HUGE dividends when he finally came here. His command of the audience with his performance and crystal clear voice was breath taking. The only other artist I have seen in concert who comes close to his performance is Jonathan Butler. San Antonio if you missed this concert you should be kicking yourself in the butt. If he came back to San Antonio tomorrow I would pay to see him again. He was just that good. The small venue was perfect as he only had four musicians with him.

  • This was the best show I've ever seen!

by Anonymous on 12/23/14Jo Long Theatre - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

From the first minute of the concert until the last minute of his encore performance, Gregory Porter kept the audience totally engaged. Unlike many performers, Porter and his band sang TO audience instead of simply screaming AT them. During one of his songs, I saw more than one person shed tears. He is an awesome singer and storyteller. After the show, he even stuck around to take pics and sign autographs for fans.

  • Gregory Porter killed it!

by Grendelfish on 12/23/14Jo Long Theatre - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

From the opening note to the encore standing ovation at the end his voice and the way he blended with his band was spot on. Especially liked, "Liquid Spirit" and "1960 What?" My only gripe is that he didn't sing "Illusions" and my favorite, "If That's The Way You Want To Live."
