About

Gregory Porter on Tour

With his rich baritone voice and his mastery of the deepest traditions of soul, jazz and gospel, Gregory Porter has established himself as one of America's most versatile and acclaimed vocalists. His artistry and sensitivity is plain to the ear whether he's putting his stamp on beloved standards by heroes like Nat "King" Cole or demonstrating his own writing talents with original songs strong enough to stand with the many classics in his repertoire.

Produced by Troy Miller (Jamie Cullum, Laura Mvula), All Rise is Porter's sixth studio album and fourth for the iconic Blue Note label. Like his 2013 breakthrough Liquid Spirit — the Grammy Award winner for Best Jazz Vocal Album — Porter's latest is a confident display of his many gifts, starting with his ability to convey feelings of both exaltation and sadness with uncommon directness and warmth.

Selling out venues to capacity, like Warner Theatre (Washington, D.C.), as engaging and charismatic onstage as he is on his recordings, Porter performs in support of All Rise throughout 2020 in venues across the U.S. and Europe.

Gregory Porter in Concert

Though Gregory Porter has been widely heralded as one of the premier male vocalists in contemporary jazz, his roots in soul and gospel are just as deep. Raised in Bakersfield, California, he got his start in music singing in the church where his mother was a minister. After a promising athletic career was cut short by an injury, he came to New York in 2004 and began building his profile through appearances and residencies at clubs in Brooklyn and Harlem. Porter's albums for the Motéma label — Water (2010) and Be Good (2012) — introduced listeners to a remarkable talent whose baritone voice maintained his warmth and richness regardless of the style and setting. His first album for Blue Note, Liquid Spirit (2013), marked a wider breakthrough on both sides of the Atlantic, winning Porter his first Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album and reaching the Top 10 on the UK charts. In 2017, Porter released Nat King Cole & Me (2017), a collection of songs recorded and inspired by his lifelong idol. His sixth studio album, All Rise, is released in the spring of 2020, with Porter performing new dates in the U.S. and Europe.

  • Gregory Porter = Must See!

by Pocal on 2/17/14Town Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Words to describe Greg Porter...brilliant, genius, funny, personable, virtuoso. He's a true and singular talent. His band was perfection as well. When he's in your town, drop everything and GO. You've not heard anyone like him and you won't be sorry.

Gregory Porter is a classic. As always he was in beautiful voice and his musicians were on fire. Impeccable, intelligent songwriting. The Howard Theater's wait staff has greatly improved. Lovely evening!

  • Simply Amazing

    by MRFox74 on 12/7/13Howard Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Never had I been at a Jazz concert where the energy so quickly changed to that of a rock concert. Not sure what was more amazing, his lush, boisterous voice or the fact with only a few notes, the audience screamed with anticipation. You must simply witness this live.

Loved him! I just found out about Gregory Porter about a month or so ago, so this was all new to me. He's so effortless and soulful, and every one of his musicians are incredible. Great music, great spirit....he packed out Howard Theatre on a Wednesday night! See him if you can.

  • Gregory was exceptional!

by LolaSoleil on 12/7/13Howard Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The venue was perfectly intimate. The acoustics were ideal for such a large voice. The food & drinks were great as well. Gregory was enthusiastic throughout performances & his band was supreme! He was also quite the comedian between songs adding to the enjoyable experience. I'd attend again next week.

My first time ever seeing Mr. Porter sing live and it was beyond my expectations. My boyfriend also enjoyed himself and we are both fans for life. Can't wait to see him when he's back in March 2014.

  • A rare natural talent

    by RobertM48 on 12/7/13Howard Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

A lyrical & vocal performance that is rare in this day and time. Kevin Mahogany, also a great vocalist, is a very close second to Mr Porter. Honestly Porter sounds as pure and thought provoking on stage as he does on CD. Very thought provoking journey for the ears and the mind.

  • Gregory Porter might be one of the great ones

by CDUB2990 on 9/30/13El Rey Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

The show was flawless. Started on time, the band was amazing, and Gregory's voice was crisp and clear. My only complaint is that he came out for just one encore. I could have listened for hours!

Concert was amazing. Gregory Porter was in incredible form - and his band was stellar. Only problem was the piano sound in the El Rey - was not at all good sounding.

  • Gregory Porter is a gift !

Liquid Spirit flowing through Gregory Porter floats up memories of how I felt 41 years ago when I first heard What's Going On by Marvin Gaye.

    by 1Jack on 9/17/12Howard Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Went to see jazz vocalist Gregory Porter at the newly renovated Howard Theatre .Porter and Band performed must of the hits from his new album "Be Good".The highlights of the show Were "on my way to Harlem"and "1960 What?" from Waters CD.The sound was perfect not being too loud as in most live concerts. Can't wait to see Porter again . PS try to attend a concert at the new Howard Theatre which has been redesigned as a "supper club" with tables and chairs, food & drink.Very Nice.

Great setting, $20 tickets, OK food at typically high prices, excellent service at the bar and appreciative crowd.
