About

A critical smash on Broadway and in London, the two-time Tony Award® winning hit musical AMERICAN IDIOT tells the story of three lifelong friends, forced to choose between their dreams and the safety of suburbia. Based on Green Day’s GRAMMY® Award-winning multi-platinum album and featuring the hits “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “21 Guns,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Holiday” and the blockbuster title track, AMERICAN IDIOT boldly takes the American musical where it’s never gone before. With direction by Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening), choreography by Steven Hoggett (Once) and orchestrations and arrangements by Tom Kitt (Next to Normal), the result is an experience Charles Isherwood of The New York Times declares “thrilling, emotionally charged, and as moving as any Broadway musical I’ve seen this year!”

High Energy with a fresh perspective on history

by JadedNewYorker on 5/21/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

Amazing! The Actors were on stage without a break for 90 minutes, but it was unfortunate that the sound system wasn't adjusted to their wonderful voices, often drowned out by the music. The energy and visual stimulation by various lighting techniques meant you wouldn't fall asleep during the performance. The ensemble was a unified group of talented people who gave 1,000% to their roles and the audience. I applaud them for the hard work.

    Second time is even better!

by whatsername13 on 5/20/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

I saw AI for the first time two years ago at the Ahmanson. It was brilliant then, but this time was even better! I noticed so many more details that I hadn't noticed the first time. This production is truly a unique work of art. It's essentially a hybrid of a punk rock concert and a play. The set is ingenious and exceptionally creative...it's my second favorite element of the musical, right after the jaw-dropping music performed by talented actors and a live rock band. AI isn't your typical play, but it is definitely my favorite production. It is deliciously unconventional and addictively intriguing.

    American Idiot - Second String

by naturalog on 5/20/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

We were really looking forward to the show, but felt like we were seeing the second string team on stage. Music was great, voices of the main characters were great, but the chorus members with the occasional solos were notably sub-par. Set, lights and visual affects were great. Choreography was odd and also wasn't helped by the second string cast. I love musicals, but this was just not up to snuff for something at the Pantages.

    if you love Green Day...

by NotaWhofan on 5/20/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

I would only recommend seeing this if you really love the music of Green Day. The story is very weak and has no depth. There is very little dialogue. It is "Mamma Mia-esque" in that the plot is clumsily fit around songs. The sets are flashing lights and flat screen TVs. The music was good but sound quality was that of a garage band. The cast has energy but I feel for their lumbar spines after dancing emo punk style for prolonged periods. The two female leads had good voices, the others would do well at an American Idol try out.

If you are a Green Day Fan - Go!

by Playdoh48 on 5/20/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

I guess I am spoiled seeing high end plays. I was a bit bored with the lack of change of scenery. I also made the mistake of not reading about the play prior to going so I was extremely lost by the lack of dialogue. I wish there was at least a narrator - or an announcement to read something prior to the play starting. Last gripe - they didn't sing Brain Stew. Come on people - best Green Day song ever and you didn't include it? Ouch. Now for the good stuff. Great actors and amazing singers. If you are a Green Day fan - they really dive head first into the music.

The album like it was meant to be experienced

by Godd on 5/20/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

The short of it is, if you are a fan of the album, see it. American Idiot is one of my favorite albums of all time. To see it come to life like this - the way it was intended, was amazing. While all in all both me and my friend really really enjoyed it, here are some of my favorite parts: 1) St. Jimmy - the guy could sing and put some nice little twists in the vocals that BJA could never do (not because he isn't talented, he just doesn't have the range). 2) What you think is going to be "wake me up when september ends" 3) 21 guns and the other non-album songs 4) The story. 5) The encore. There were some negatives: 1) The dancing was super broadway we don't know how to do punk/rock/whatever. 2) The songs sung with multiple lead singers were the worst, such as "Jesus of Suburbia" which is not only my favorite song on the album but one of the best songs of all time in my book. Of course worst is still pretty good. , sans "We are the waiting". 3) As mentioned "we are the waiting." The guy singing it just wasn't hitting it.

    American Idiot was fantastic!

by HBnik on 5/20/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

I heard about the show when it first opened and thought it sounded interesting. When I heard it was in LA, I decided to check it out. I have been a big Green Day fan for years, and always loved their concerts. I was not sure what to expect of the musical and was blown away. The performance and story are wonderfully executed.

    american idiot

by euribe on 5/20/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

when I purchased the tickets I was told that the lead signer from Green Day was performing as one of the main characters. I was disappointed when I arrived to find out he was not. The show was worth seeing because of the music. It would have been better with lead singer of Green Day performing.

    Green Day Rocks on Broadway!

by Lordgin on 5/20/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

One of the best musicals I have ever seen. The performances are passionate, the subject matter a true reflection of life and the star of the show is the heart pounding music of Green Day! A true masterpiece where the show doesn't insult the viewer with colorful costumes and coddle to senior citizens with Fairy Tale endings. Instead, the show gives the audience an insight on apathy, angst and loss through wonderful choreographed numbers coupled by hard, foot stomping music. Leave the kids at home and rage like you did when you were young! Please Note: There is NO intermission.

    American Idiot was great!

by Katlee4 on 5/20/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

I had heard both good and not-so-good reviews from some friends...so I wasn't sure what to expect. Well, I loved it! If you are in any way a Green Day fan, I can't imagine you not liking it. There was laughter, even a few tears...but all in all, just a great performance by the whole cast. The 3 main male characters were all equally good - and so were the female leads. I would definitely see it again.

    High Energy, Highly Entertaining!

by Anonymous on 5/20/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

I was blown away! The show was engaging from start to finish, and the actors, set, and lighting were all outstanding. It was very interesting to see the songs re-purposed for the stage, but without losing the young, rebellious vibe that Green Day is so well know for. The live band on stage was a great touch. Overall, this production is highly recommended for anyone who wants to see a contemporary, high-energy show (especially if you're like me and grew up with the soundtrack).

    Depends on Who You Are

by MmmmHmmmmm on 5/20/14Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

If you're a die hard Green Day fan then you would love this musical because it's basically a cover of all their songs. If you're not & you are hoping to enjoy a musical this will be an excruciatingly painful and long torture. Why it received 1 star: - no story line or real developed plot - granted this is a musical, but the little monologue the main actor had was annoying with his 3 word sentences in diary/letter form read out loud - performers & sound system failed to sing and speak clearly, i could not figure a word they were saying, everything sounded muffled and dulled - dancing/choreography, i suppose may be meant to be a little loose and grungy, but to me it looked unpracticed, lazy and uncoordinated - no intermission, by the midway point the whole audience and i were fidgeting in our seats cause our butts were numb from sitting too long i'm so disappointed in this musical. i might have developed a hate towards green day now cause of it.
