Great experience as usual which keeps the wife and I coming back.
Fabulous concert. Guest cellist was amazing. We got the cheap $19 seats and while we couldn’t see all the musicians the sound was still beautiful. Highly recommend.
Don't get me wrong: I am a social justice advocate. I liked the principle behind the opening piece, but I just can't get behind it. This piece was upsetting, and maybe that was the goal of it. I felt exactly the same way about the first piece played at the final show of last season. I loved the latter two classical pieces. It was my friend's first time at the symphony. He loved the latter two, and didn't quite understand what the first was doing there in the program.
The around the world video clips enhanced the in person symphonic performance with historical context presented by Rick Steves.
Wonderful show showcasing music from countries around Europe with photos and videos of the countries from Rick Steves.
Love the Grand Rapids Symphonic Orchestra along with Rick Steves. However, I was disappointed in the amount of photos from each country. I didn’t like just seeing the composer’s face for half of each music selection. Also, it would have helped to have had a script running below the photos to let the audience know where we were in each country.
We were treated to a wonderful evening of music written by some of the worlds best composers as well as listening to the narration of travel guru Rick Steves. While enjoying the sounds of the Grand Rapids Symphony we also got to witness scenes from the countries represented by these composers. It was truly a special evening.
We thoroughly enjoyed this event that combined Rick Steves and the Grand Rapids Symphony and appreciated the chance to do some armchair travel immersed in beautiful music. However, DeVos Performace Hall is a mess! The seats, the carpets, the floors were all filthy and in desperate need of cleaning and new decor. I’m shocked that Grand Rapids doesn’t have a better venue for these events. Sorely disappointed. We will not be purchasing tickets for anything at this venue until changes are made.
Excellent concert and Rick Steves made it even better.
The musical selections and execution of them by our symphony were fantastic. The narration was excellent. Just wish there were more photos as both hearing the music and seeing the photos were a notch up from just one or the other.
I loved this so much! The Symphony was amazing. I do wish that the videos they played with all the travel footage lasted the entire piece though.
We enjoyed the experience of watching Goonies and listening to the symphony play the score to it. I was worried that music or movie would suffer by one or the other, but it was wonderful. Thank You for a wonderful night!
We both thought Rick phoned it in. With pieces of music 10-20 minutes long we expected a guy who’s done travel shows for 20+ years to have enough footage to show for the duration of the piece. Instead we got about 3 minutes of video and the rest of the time we saw a map of Europe and composer’s portrait. I give it 2 stars because the symphony did a fine job, but Rick Steves and PBS definitely did NOT deliver!
We all enjoyed the night, the photos and Rick were good and the music, as always was top notch. My only criticism/suggestion that keeps this from being a 5 star event is that everyone in my party agreed that we wanted more photos from each location as the music played. It was much more entertaining to be able to see the images while hearing the music and once photos were done the screen shot of composer or the time it was blank was just a distraction. More great scenery photos please!
The music was great, some even seemed to ‘sync’ with the video footage. But the videos of every country were WAY too short, causing a disappointment that you could sense was happening among others around you; and the footage played WAY too fast to really take in the grandeurs of the countries. All that said, the symphony gave an unexpected grand finale!!! Bravo!
We saw the GR symphony play the score to the movie Goonies. They were spot on! Also the staff at Devos Performance Hall was spectacular! We will certainly return for more.
One of the best nights of entertainment we’ve had. The orchestra was brilliant and they took movie watching to a whole new level. You could tell a lot of work and dedication goes into their orchestra, but you could see they were having so much fun playing The Goonies score! Well done and an amazing night!
My son took me to see the Goonies movie with the GR Symphony at DeVos Hall for my birthday and it was such an enjoyable experience! I will definitely go to another similar show in the future!
These experiences are the BEST. My first one was last year with The Princess Bride. Whoever came up with this idea was genius! The only negative I have is with the audience. Please respect the symphony folks and remain seated until they are finished with the score. You miss half of the extraordinary experience!
Mahler was exceptional. Forget "Hate the Sin-Love the Sinner". None in my group of 9 liked it. As a matter of fact, they strongly disliked it.
