    Average Experience

by Stargazer on 12/25/23DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

The Holiday Pops this year were just average. It didn't seem to be well rehearsed as there were gaps in the youth coming out - Santa was not entertaining- just average. Just seemed like everyone was just going through the motions. The singer had a good voice, but it was underwhelming as though the sound system was not on full force. The symphony was excellent as usual, but the overall impression was just kind of average. Nothing new or special.

    A very enjoyable evening

by RLP on 12/24/23DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

From the opening drop of the baton to the final Hallelujah, we thoroughly enjoyed the concert. My wife and I felt that this was a very enjoyable evening of Christmas music. We appreciate being a part of a community that appreciates the arts ... a talented, professional symphony, a wonderful choir (adult and youth), etc. We could have heard a few more bells. We are previous season ticket POPS concert holders. We joined in tonight for the Christmas season. Thank you Grand Rapids. We hope the community continues their strong support of the arts.

    So much fun

by Wolfgang on 12/5/23DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

Every single time we go and see the GR symphony orchestra we have an awesome time. Before we moved to GR I was never really a fan of classic music and did not often go to a concert. And now; I think I have seen them 6 times over the last year! And the holiday pop concert will be our next one!

    Impressed

by Ron on 11/22/23DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

I am always impressed with the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra. I was surprisingly pleased with the chorus. I enjoyed the choir vocals more than the solos. The whole presentation displays Handel’s desire that God would be glorified and that people would recognize that Jesus is the Messiah and would choose to follow Him.

    Handel's Messiah by Candlelight

by Mary on 11/21/23DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

The performance was just wonderful! However, the tickets I'd purchased online would not scan from my phone on any scanner. So we needed to go to box o ffice to have paper tickets printed, then go back through line.

Good, but not as good as Calvin

by Lihplom on 11/21/23DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

We go every year to a production of Handel’s Messiah. This year, we took advantage of the GR Symphony’s production due to a scheduling conflict. It was well done, but the orchestra was smaller and the harpsichord was set back on the stage rendering it mute. It was definitely not as loud as Calvin’s annual production, but that’s due to the sheer numbers of the cast. I felt the electric candles being waved around by the audience members was a bit cheesy. I get it that they don’t want real flame on stage, but those on stage at least looked real from the distance of only six rows back. Would i go again? Yes, but only if i couldn’t make it to the other.

    Wonderful Music!

by SC on 11/21/23DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

The music was phenomenal! Enjoyed the Christmas candlelight atmosphere! A sour note happened finding our seats with a not so courteous usher. In the past, the usher would ask us for our tickets to see about helping find them. That did not happen and it had been years (before Covid) since being back there at Devos. We didn't realize we needed to take an elevator to get to the balcony and we were on the Mez level. It was a disaster being in the middle of the row and turned out people were in our seats, so we had to go back, not a good experience at all. I had wished there to be more signage or people who would have verified that we were on the correct level. After we left the Mez level she says as we are leaving, "You were in the wrong seats!"Placing the blame! That was uncalled for I believe. Not sure if we will be back after that experience.

    Worth it

by Entertainee on 11/6/23DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

I've only been to listen to the GR symphony twice. Both were unique and delightful. The live music played with the Pixar movie Coco was such a unique experience. I haven't stopped telling people about it <3

    Season-opening piece was a downer

by James on 10/3/23DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

Please know that I’ve been a longtime supporter of the Grand Rapids Symphony, but I feel compelled to critique the opening night concert of September 15th. It was a magnificent performance - apart from the opening piece. For me, the first sounds from the orchestra in a season-opening concert should draw the audience in to the musical experience that awaits them. Unfortunately, the piece “White Gleam of Our Bright Star” was too confusing and dissonant for an opener. It continues a trend from previous season openers to open with an obscure work. How much better if we had heard a fanfare from Shostakovich or an overture from Walton. Once the orchestra dispatched the opening piece, the rest of the concert shined with musical brilliance - especially pianist Daniil Trifinov. Apart from the opener, this review would have been 5 stars.
