    Good music, disjointed story

by RH on 1/9/24DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

If you like Bob Dylan music the singing was fabulous. The story did not match the songs and was very hard to follow. If not for the music, I’d have fallen asleep. We almost left at intermission but thought for sure it would get better. It didn’t.

    Excellent performances. Mis-used Dylan music.

by Steve on 1/8/24DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Not sure what this was about. Who was the "Girl from the North Country"? Set in the depression Era, was a pretty depressing show all around. Disjointed use of music. Musical numbers didn't seem to add to the story, only confused things further. Most of the Dylan tunes were not recognizable, especially with how they were performed. Cast performed well.

    Depressing

by Chirps on 1/8/24DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Really unhappy with the play itself. When I heard Ty there would be 20 Bob Dylan songs in it…..I was excited and anticipated so much more. First of all the story line is quite depressing. The stage is dimly lit to support the fact it takes place during the depression…but it makes it depressing for the audience. None of the songs(save 1) are done with upbeat music and singing. The songs don’t seem to amplify what is going on with the dialogue….just kind of stuck in. Audience maybe clapped twice after a song for the entire play. My friends left at half time. Save your money. Go see any of the other amazing musicals on tour, this one isn’t worth it.

A complex view of people during Depression

by Hania on 12/13/23Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

I found the story line and music very inspirational and emotional. The actors, performance and arrangments of Bob Dylan's song were terrific.

    Hard to follow

    by Lynn on 10/26/23

I found the story confusing; too many plots and characters without a main story line to connect everything made it hard to follow. Performers did a good job, but not enough to keep us there after intermission.

    Hmmm, not sure

by Chuck on 10/21/23Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

While no theater expert, i found this to be an interesting show. The music as expected was done well, performed to a tee. The story line also interesting.. a musical set to an era before the musician who produced it was born. That said there were moments where it really flowed, good musical alignment with the story line. Then there were the moments where it was forced (i.e., Hurricane) and it set the story astray for me personally. So some good, some interesting and some funky parts, it was ok.

    Could not hear the actors!

by Jo on 10/18/23Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

My friend and I were sitting in the "nosebleed section,"Aisle Q. Seats were fine but we could not hear the actors and therefore had NO idea what the story was about. The music was great but it is a shame that missed the entire story. We had to read about it afterwards, and couldn't believe how much we actually missed! May want to mic up the actors in the future!!

    Good music, sad subject

    by jo_yo on 10/18/23Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

Dylan's music was great. The subjects of the play were sad people with sad stories who came together in depression era Duluth. MN. Acting was great.

    Dysfunctional story

by Ginger on 10/17/23Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

I would not recommend spending time or money on this show. The actual musical part was fantastic, but minimal. The storyline was blasé, mundane and unengaging.

    Good music, bad story

by AM on 10/17/23Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

If you are a fan of Bob Dylan songs and/or well sung music, spend $50 to see this show. The story has too much going on. Too many characters so you don’t really dive in an get to know them. The songs don’t fit the plot very well either.

    Music arrangements fantastic

by Deb on 10/17/23Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

They play itself was weak, but the music arrangements of Dylan’s songs was enthralling . The choreography and entire music performance was well done.

    Not what I expected

by Bob on 10/16/23Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

The positives centered around the performers who were terrific. The staging was effective. Also, though not really choreography (in terms of dancing) but there was a lot going on at any given time besides the main focus. Characters moved about and interacted with each other in ways that seemed very natural. For me, there were too many characters, with some being a little disjointed relative to the story being told. A better focus on a few characters and developing those people better might have been more effective. I was not sure what the narrator added to the production in that most of what was said was not needed. On the other hand, the narrator could have provided more background to the story that would have made the story a little clearer. Who were all these people and why did they show up to this hotel over Thanksgiving? What was the connection among them? A better script could easily change a confusing story into a sad, but more effective performance.

    Meh

by TammyO on 10/16/23Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

I have so many questions. Why introduce a character (Kate) and never reference her again? Who was the baby daddy? Too many storylines and barely any wrapped up at the end. Overacting by the son and reverend were distracting! Too many cities named dropped, we get it, it’s set in Minnesota. Setting was in the 30s but dialog written for today, super disconnected. LOVED the talents who played the mom and dad!! She saved the production for me.

    Girl From The North Country

    by B&L on 10/15/23Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

It was a great exploration of human nature in an interesting time and place, a 1934 post-depression Duluth boarding house. Cast did a great job of drawing us into the story and music. The connection to Dylan songs was a little disjointed. Very entertaining and enjoyable show!!

    Didn't feel like Dylan

by Dylan lover on 10/15/23Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

The acting and singing were fine but it was very hard to hear Dylan's lyrics. The reason we chose to go was because we love Dylan's work but this show didn't show case it well. We left at intermission.

    Somewhat disappointing

by Lotte on 10/15/23Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

Acoustics were not very good. Story arc was depressing without redemption. The “mother” was the best- she had strong vocals and stayed in character throughout. Her movements and body language consistently matched her emotional turmoil. With decades of Dylan’s catalogue to pick from the song choices seemed poor.

    What did he/she say?

    by G_Bminor on 10/15/23Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

I liked the play (story, acting, set, etc) and Conor McPherson's choice of Bob Dylan's music to accentuate the details of the plot. However, the sound technology in the Orpheum needs improvement for those who choose seating in the upper balcony. I often could not clearly hear the words spoken by the actors, especially when the play required an expression of high emotion and fast talking. Not sure what to suggest..... perhaps placement of a second monitor (like the one next to the lower left corner of the stage) that would be strategically placed for folks in the balcony to view.

Great Show pity about sound system!

by John on 10/15/23Orpheum Theatre - Minneapolis

Great show enthusiastic performances from the cast, small bit of advice....slow down the pace a little.....was a little manic. Lovely setting unfortunately let down by poor sound system. Myself and two companions all felt much of the dialogue was lost due to poor sound.
