Despite flight delays, a good time had by all

Opening act "One Lone Car" from St. Louis turned in a decent performance, which was certainly no small feat. It must be tough as the unknown opener for two bands people have actually heard of in Cleveland, coupled with the half-hour delay of the concert due to an in-flight emergency on the airplane bringing Tonic's lead singer. The band played an extended set of radio-friendly and generally non-distinguished pop/rock. Nothing to write home about, but enjoyable.
Since Tonic was not yet in the building, Gin Blossoms seemingly reluctantly took the stage first. The band ran through all of its hits and a few new compositions, and despite lead singer Robin Wilson playing to the crowd and running out into the audience, the overall effect of the show was "this is a group of guys in their early 40s who almost made it to the top ten a over a decade ago and really don't know why they're doing it anymore". The music was solid, competent, sing-along enjoyable... but in general it was low on energy and "rock show excitement". It was a by-the-numbers set.
Tonic, however, played an excellent set, despite half the crowd having left after Gin Blossoms finished, and having been scared to death in a depressurized aircraft at 25,000 feet just hours earlier. The trio only has one or two songs most people would know, but they made all of their songs seem fresh and hit-worthy by playing with energy and excitement. Tonic definitely made the people who hung around long enough to wait for them happy. In fact, I could have listened to them for a another hour had the show not started late.
