About

After more than 30 years of a lifestyle that often required lots of time on the road, country legend George Strait has saddled up for what he says will be his final tour, a two-year outing dubbed The Cowboy Rides Away Tour.

More than 20 farewell concerts take place between January and May of 2014, and the shows -- many of which will feature a big-name special guest such as Jason Aldean, Eric Church, Martina McBride, or Sheryl Crow -- are proving to be hot tickets as fans celebrate the storied career of the country mainstay. He announced his retirement from the road during a September 2012 press conference in Nashville, and played more than 20 farewell shows during early 2013.

Strait doesn't plan to ride into the sunset -- he's just done with long tours. He recently renewed his deal with MCA Records, so he'll keep releasing new music and plans to also play select concert dates in the future. But grueling trips aboard the tour bus are in his rearview mirror.
After the Urban Cowboy ethos dominated country music in the late '70s, Strait emerged in the early '80s with his take on classic country stylings, and is often credited with paving the way for other neo-traditionalist superstars like Garth Brooks, Dwight Yoakam, and Randy Travis.
Strait's catalog includes timeless hits like "Amarillo by Morning," "All My Ex's Live in Texas," "Love Without End, Amen," and "I've Come to Expect it From You."

A 2006 inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame, Strait's remarkable career has included a record 60 No. 1 songs on the country chart. He holds many other country sales records, including most No. 1 albums and most gold, platinum, and multi-platinum albums. Only Elvis Presley and The Beatles have more combined gold and platinum albums in their catalogs.

A native of Poteet, Texas, south of San Antonio, Strait grew up in neighboring Frio County. He first took up music in high school as a member of a rock garage band. After a stint in the Army, he  earned an Agriculture degree from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos while playing in a bar band that performed around central and south Texas.

Strait signed with MCA Records in 1981, after Erv Woolsey, who ran one of the bars Strait's band played, urged Nashville talent scouts to check him out. Woolsey went on to become Strait's manager.

by Awesome Show on 5/11/24Lucas Oil Stadium - Indianapolis

All 3 artist was amazing. High energy! Little Big Town kick everything off. Rocked the house. Chris Stapleton just amazing. The songs was like you hear on the radio. George Straight is an icon. Played awesome for a long time which was great for how long he has being in the business!

    Background volume

by Nodontask2 on 5/10/24Lucas Oil Stadium - Indianapolis

I was so excited to see him since he is the reason I am counrty. My husband and I traveled and loved all 3 artists. Unfortunately when george came out the background music overpowered his vocals. I was so disappointed.

    Can not beat the king

by PaLaWilson on 5/10/24Lucas Oil Stadium - Indianapolis

Great concert, great to see entertainers not using backup tracks. Pure natural talent. Good thing Chris Stapleton wears hats, couldn’t see much from the seats and tickmaster did not have them marked view obstruction. That was very disappointing for the price I paid.

    Extremely Disappointed

by Jami C on 5/10/24Lucas Oil Stadium - Indianapolis

I’m not one to usually complain and try to find the silver lining in situations, however we were extremely disappointed in the overall experience for this venue. We purchased floor seats and paid a premium price only to get the most uncomfortable plastic chairs zip-tied together so that you felt like your neighbors were sitting in your lap. The restroom situation was deplorable for the floor seats…portable toilets in a very small space, some of which were overflowing. The sound for this particular concert was awful…we couldn’t discern what was being said by the artists when they spoke and similarly had difficulty following along with songs because of the poor sound quality. We have been to Lucas Oil Stadium for other concerts, in fact we attended the Morgan Wallen concert just a few weeks ago and did not have the same experience with the sound quality. Our seats were in the same general vicinity but not on the floor, but I wouldn’t think there would be that much difference. We were so excited to see George Strait for the first time and unfortunately didn’t get to enjoy the show at all. We had seen Chris Stapleton and had enjoyed his other shows.

    Great concert-bad accoustics

by Straitjacket on 5/9/24Lucas Oil Stadium - Indianapolis

The George Strait concert at Lucas Oil was a fun time, however the acoustics there aren't good for concerts. I wonder if they opened the roof if it would have sounded better? Little Big Town was over the top fakey, I would have liked to have had less of them and more of George Strait at the end of the concert. Chris Stapleton's time on stage was perfect, too bad the acoustics interfered with hearing his voice more clearly. He and his group did a bang up job and brought down the house! George performed some of his classics, but not enough. I wish he would have performed more of the classics and less of his newer songs. Although his performance of Folsom Prison Blues was great! Overall it was a great time, but the cost of the tickets were too high for Little Big Town and only 1/3 of George's classic songs.

Sound quality was not good at all. Echo and timing was off. Seats were way over priced.

    George Sraight

by Melissa on 5/9/24Lucas Oil Stadium - Indianapolis

Enjoyed George Sraight concert at Lucas Oil Staum. First time for me being inside the Staum. Special in both ways of having to experience seeing the Country music legion inside a beautiful place of the Indianapolis downtown area.

Great Concert. Wouldn't sit on the floor again.

by Joe on 5/9/24Lucas Oil Stadium - Indianapolis

It was an enjoyable concert hearing all 3 artists. We sat on the floor (row 38) and these chairs were so uncomfortable and so tight there was no room between patrons. It was told Lucas Oil rented the chairs from George Strait. The acoustics could have been improved as well. As much money as you paid for floor seats, the experience could have been better.

    AMAZING SHOW!

by JB on 5/9/24Lucas Oil Stadium - Indianapolis

George put on the show that we were all hoping for. With 60 Number One hits, there's no way to hear ALL of our favorites, but he sure hit a lot of them. Bringing Stapleton out was incredible. Just an overall fantastic show. King George is the GOAT.
