This production of FOLLIES shows why Sondheim has been the dominant maker of Broadway musicals for our time. The cast, direction,t and choreography are superior, and the show unforgettable. Ron Raines, Danny Burstein, and Jan Maxwell did fabulous star turns, and all the supporting players were first rate.
Simply amazing! Huge cast and orchestra. May not see the big stage for another 40 years! GO!
What an awesome show! The actors drew you in with extraordinary character portrayal and the orchestra was flawless with the most beautiful blend, balance and musicality. Soundheim done at its best! BRAVO!
Well acted Sondheim downer about theater has-beens who hate themselves and each other, Had I known it was so depressing, I would have bought tickets. Jan Maxwell deserves a Tony. She's was the one bright spot in the show.
I am so glad i made the time/spent the money on this show. Performers were incredible. Story is timeless. Music/Score/Book wonderful. You have until Sunday to see it here; I am considering a trip to LA to see it again. (though Ms. Peters will not be playing Sally at the Ahmanson). **I am also a new fan of Jan Maxwell!
Seeing this show some years ago as a teenager, I was taken with the music, but the show didn't move me in a profound or emotional way. Seeing this production as a middle-aged man, the emotional wallop was immediate and complete. The existential dilemma of looking into the abyss of one's past, one's mistakes. one's poor choices that remain with us for the duration of life, is something not expected in a Broadway musical. But this show does just that. It holds up the universal existential mirror to us all, and does so with sensational Sondheim songs of wit and impact.
The soon-to-close Broadway production of "Follies" got rave reviews, and it deserved them. This was one Sondheim show which I had never seen live, and I'm glad this production was my introduction. Everything about it was superb-- sets, choreography, direction, acting ensemble, and stars -- most especially Elaine Paige and Bernadette Peters. They now move on to Los Angeles in the Spring, and theatergoers there (like those who caught it in DC and NY) should not miss it. Walking out of the show, I mulled over the name of this musical, and suddenly realized that it is a PUN, referring not only to the 'Weismann'/Ziegfeld Follies whose chorus girls' reunion is its setting-- but also to the foibles of human follies! Did everybody realize this before?
Amazing show. Amazing performances. Amazing music. In other words, amazing! So glad I was able to catch it before it closes.
Good talent, a few good production numbers and good costuming couldn’t overcome a poor script and an insipid story. It was better than "On a Clear Day" but not half as good as "Billy Eliot". If "Phantom" is a 10, Follies would be a 3 ½ - 4.
Ms. Peters and the rest of the cast - the veterans as well as those new (or nearly new) to Broadway were wonderful. And it was so nice to see how they meshed! I would see it again!
Bravo to the producers who brought this production in from the Kennedy Center and gave a new generation of theatergoers the chance to see this masterpiece from the 1970s.
A first class production and cast all the way. Set was hauntingly beautiful. Have seen many times. This version dwarfs them all.
I loved the whole show, but the true show stoppers were Elaine Paige singing, "I'm Still Here" (Thank God!!!). She is also HILARIOUS!!! Jayne Houdyshell knocks it out of the park and plays one of the few happy characters in the play. I left thinking I wanted to know her! Mary Beth Peil was fabulous as Solange and it was such fun to see her play a completely different character than the one we see on "The Good Wife". Susan Watson is ADORABLE. Terri White is Amazing!!!!! I cannot believe what she does. I am a fan for life and could not sing and dance like that and still breathe to save my life. Leah Horowitz as Young Heidi has the most beautiful voice I have ever heard. Her duet with Rosalind Elias was such a thrill to hear. They were perfect together. Jane Maxwell has a great voice and is absolutely stunning. Her Phyllis is funny and strong. Ron Raines, what a voice!!!! Danny Burstein makes a part I have never liked really enjoyable. I totally feel for Buddy. See this show!!! AND the costumes are stunning.
There are so few opportunities for so many 'mature' actors to perform in a Broadway show, and I was absolutely delighted to see this group of well-regarded actors together in this show. The costumes for the younger version of the girls were stunning! Though the show is about the closing of a theater and a final farewell party, the set did seem remarkably dark and dreary - at sometimes this enhanced the mood, at others it didn't really work.
it is amazing - i have seen it twice and would see it many more times if it continued its run. there is nothing like Sondheim - he is a genius bar none.
Haunting, textured, achingly beautiful are the first words to come to mind after seeing FOLLIES. The action moved seamlessly! The Ghosts of chorus girls past were present throughout the show, usually moving in slow motion while the action was going on below. Teri White stopped the show in it's tracks!!!!! Bernadette Peters broke my heart in so many places. Seeing Jan Maxwell's iceberg transform into a volcano during Could I Leave You was riveting!
This less-often produced work of Stephen Sondheim had me skeptical going in and walking on air coming out. I loved every aspect of this production - the opening number, Beautiful Girls, was worth the price of admission, in my opinion! It is fascinating (and a little upsetting to be completely honest) that Sondheim shows do not run as long as I think they should and wish they would. Most of the material he chooses to work with has compelling depth and gives the viewer something juicy to sink his teeth into. I love a show that makes me think, and this one did.
I have always loved the score to this show, but never saw a production of it. The show was choppy, uninteresting backdrop of ghosts of follies past, mis-casting of Bernadette Peters as what's her name, and the performance was way overdone. The direction of this show was at best minimal. It could have been directed over the internet, and it probably was based on the staging and blocking these folks were given. Elaine Paige should have been cast in the Lead role. What a shame. I'm sick that I spent top dollar for tickets to something sub par.
Great to see Bernadette Peters. Cast was good but the play was really disjointed. Not Broadway caliber in my opinion.
