I was privliged to see the closing performance of the revival of Follie. Every number was a show stopper. Although the cast was heavily laden with stars, it was truly an ensemble performance. Bernadette Peter's performance was worth the price of admission alone. Danny Burnstein was outstanding. He is just boundless energy. Ron Raines has great presence and a great voice. And Elaine Paige..what is there to say, she is quite a trooper. Loved it.
Follies is the best show currently on Broadway. The cast of the show are seasoned Broadway performers and the style of the performance is classic Broadway. It evokes every emotion possible. It is definitely a must see.
Hauntingly beautiful. Heartbreaking performances by Bernadette Peters and Jan Maxwell. I was at the closing performance and was so moved to be a part of this moment in Theater History. The cast was an A List of Theater legends. I wish there was a song that stuck with like the ghosts did.
I am an equity actor and have done this show six times (playing Solange three times and directing it three times. ) This was a beautiful production, but I was startled at the droped lines, changed lyrics by Carlotta, and older Ben going up on lines. Don't expect thaton Broadway!! idn't think this was the right vehicle for Bernadette Peters. Did not like her interpretation of Sally. Was surprised, as I love her work and have never seen her in anything else that I didn't thoroughly enjoy. Hope the show does well oin LA. It is one of my favorites.
The way all Broadway should be... too bad it only had a limited run. check it out in LA.
One of the best experiences in a theater I've ever had.
While the book has merit to it, it does not seem to flow. The music was OK - Ms. Peterts was in fine voice, as always, as well as the other actors. The play is closing, but will probably be revived in the future.
Loved Follies. Three fabulous moments: "Broadway Baby," the actress was so talented, proving that age and a few extra pounds don't matter. Talent trumps all. "Mirror Mirror" lead actress so touched by the audience's standing ovation that she had tears in her eyes and I think broke character for a minute. "Lucy and Jesse" -- quintessential Sondheim, sophisticated, complicated
This was a fantastic production--every detail was well done! Incredible to see so many talented people on the same stage!
Unfortunately Follies ended yesterday because you will probably never see a standing ovation such as the one Terri White received Saturday evening -- a "show-stopping" four minutes -- it was unprecedented!!!
The talent was amazing. Costumes spectacular. Lighting was superb. Such a talented cast that almost every song deserved a standing ovation. So so so so good.
Beautiful direction with incredible talent. So glad I got to see it before it ended its run in NY!
Bernadette Peters was mis-cast. Jan Maxwell and Danny Burstein were the highlights but over-all this emotionless version of my favorite Sondheim musical was tepid at best. The weird flowery set they added to some of the numbers 3/4 thru was not a good choice.
I have to admit that I quickly grabbed a ticket for this 3 performances before closing in NYC. I am a fan of many of the women, but went to see Elaine Paige, specifically. This is one of Sondheim's most uner-appreciated works and this is evident in about two songs. But the remainder - ah, the remainder. Sad, joyful, in-your-face and some of the best performances I've seen in a long time. Elaine Paige, Jan Maxwell and Mary Beth Piel were absolute standouts, as were the stars in other "lesser" parts (Is any role a "lesser" one in any of Sondheim's productions?) . I had no idea Elaine could sound so throaty, so AMERICAN, and with such a dimunitive stature, she commanded the stage like no one else. The men, Ron Raines and Danny Burstein, were also exceptional. My disappointmnet lay in Bernadette Peters, of whom I have been a lifelong fan. Closing my eyes, I could see the witch in Into The Woods, with the unchanging vocal dialogue inflections, and upon reflection, realized that these are the same inflections (call it acting techniques) that I have seen and heard throughout the years. Having said that, she does have the baby-voiced range modulating to a wronged woman and then, her almost pitchy soprano, that we all know and love so well, superbly. The dance numbers and the Weissman girls were to die for. Unforunately, I heard that Bernadette will not be traveling to the West Coast, and notwithstanding my comments above, this will be a sad gap in the cohesion of the cast. I must say, however, that I don't know who her replacement is yet, so that, of course, will be a factor, but this is certainly a production and a cast worthy to see over again. I wish a DVD would be produced as they did the other Sondheims, of this particular production, in its entirety.
Loved every moment of the show!!! Would love to see Follies again when I hope it will return. The actors deserve more than the standing ovation we gave!!! Terrific performance!!!
the acting, the story, the music, the costumes, the actors/actresses. It was all wonderful, I laughed. I cried and I stared in awe :O.
I saw the initial production in the 70's and thought & think it the best show I'd ever seen. The music and lyrics are creatively poignant, the story line fun to follow, and the staging right-on. This production reminded me what a theatre jewel Follies is.
You must see this production to believe it, and unfortunately, you only have two more days in New York to do that. This is Broadway for grownups.
Nothing but amazing. Must win 2012 Tony for best Musical revival
