About

The Flying Bach is a clash of cultures where classical music meets breakdance.  The Flying Steps, four time breakdance world champions, deliver a creative performance set to Johann Sebastian Bach's "The Well-Tempered Clavier", bridging the art forms of classical and urban culture.  The elegant music along with explosive moves creates an amazing and entertaining show for people of all ages and demographics.

    So good

by Flippers123 on 7/1/14Civic Opera House - Chicago

Flying Bach was so incredibly good. Who know such an odd combination like classical music and break dancing would go so well together?

    We Left before It Ended

by Frances97 on 7/1/14Civic Opera House - Chicago

We expected a much more energetic show. If you go because you like ballet, you'll find there isn't enough. If you go because you want the high-energy, "Red Bull" break dancing, you'll be bored by the ballet/modern dance portions. The advertisements did not give a true idea of what the show truly is. Also, there were LOTS and LOTS of kids. Some were well behaved but some weren't only adding to the frustration of the evening.

    Flying Bach was good-not great

by litmari on 7/1/14Civic Opera House - Chicago

When the male dancers danced, it was great. The rest of the time it was just boring. Also the bass on the soundtrack was awful

Kudos to the Flying Steps for trying something different and doing it passionately! At the end of the day, the choreography failed at some points to be more than just technical prowess; dancing that was more attuned to the dynamics of a piece and not just the rhythm of each note would have taken it to the next level. Excellent precision in dancing, though, and the ballerina was excellent in her unique role. I do wish the entrance had come off less like a college house party, but that's more on Red Bull's marketing aesthetic than the Flying Steps. Worth the try just to see something new!

Amazing dancing, but get balcony seats

by tink1028 on 6/30/14Civic Opera House - Chicago

The show was spectacular. The dancing was incredible, well choreographed and the music was well performed. But, my seats--which should have been excellent (5th row floor) were terrible. They do a lot of work close to the stage (even lying on it) and I could often not see what was going on. I imagine the only "good" seats were the balcony. From the way people were shifting and adjusting around me, I don't think anyone could see very well.

    Something different

by jhj69 on 6/30/14Civic Opera House - Chicago

Hip hop paired with Bach. It was enjoyable to watch the clash of two worlds not normally paired together.

    Flying Bach Soared!

by SoNCo on 6/30/14Civic Opera House - Chicago

Loved it. The dancers are extremely talented. I loved the culture clash and the amount of ballet that was still performed. I loved the stories that were told and their body language was on point. It was super fun! Great date night or girls night activity. Kept me, my boyfriend and our friends entertained the whole time. Just wish it was a little longer!

    Surprisingly Good

by TypicalTheaterGoer on 6/30/14Civic Opera House - Chicago

When my daughter, 25 wanted to go, we got her tickets. She asked us to go and though I was not sure, the three of us went. It was incredible, most of the dancing was to classical piano or harpsichord. I am not a fan of loud electrical music, but when it was used here it fit well and it did not last long enough to bother me ( My hearing is messed up from an injury in the Army, and that kind of music can bother my equilibrium and cause me nausea ). In fact it served to bring an appropriate shot of energy. The dancers performed incredible gymnastic stunts in a choreographed poise. In fact there was 1 part modern ballet to 4 parts break dancing. My wife and I had a great time and really liked the music!

    Bach meets Breakdance

by Linda72 on 6/30/14Civic Opera House - Chicago

Red Bull Company is astounding; music was classic but adapted to contemporary sensibilities; visuals stunningly creative. Civic Opera should be a venue for more serious dance performances. My only criticism was that performance was 20 minutes delayed in starting--management should require and warn that people come on time or sit in the rear! It disrupted the experience for the rest of us who were there on time to watch people take their seats in front of us for almost the entire performance!! Also people should not be allowed back in if they leave. People were getting up to leave to get a drink and coming back in. Let's keep this formal so that all of us can have a fantastic aesthetic experience.

    Flying Bach

by AMoses on 6/30/14Civic Opera House - Chicago

Flying Steps was incredible! I could have done without the ballerina and story line. The music was beautiful. And when they would break from the pianist to the record, the beat and revreb was superb.

Great show, amazing moves, enjoyable music

by Anonymous on 6/26/14Civic Opera House - Chicago

Was really looking forward to seeing this show. The beginning started a bit slow, and wasn't sure if it would live up to my expectations. When the dancers started showing their impressive moves, it picked up from there. There seemed to be an interesting storyline, with exchanges between the woman showing ballet and the guys displaying their breakdancing moves. My friend and I were both excited and waiting for the woman to start 'breaking' and blow us all away, but unfortunately that didn't happen. That's the only slight negative, b/c it just seems like that would've made it amazing. Still, the show was very entertaining - great music, good pacing with awesome moves interspersed with slower themes/videography.
