About

University of Florida Gators Football at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium

The University of Florida has a football team it can be proud to call its own in the Florida Gators. Florida competes in the Eastern Division of the Southeastern Conference, and they're coached by Dan Mullen, who led the Gators to a 10-3 record, a Peach Bowl victory and a Top 10 finish in his first season in 2018. The Gators play at what is officially known as Steve Spurrier-Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium — far more commonly known as "The Swamp." Ben Hill Griffin Stadium was originally built in 1930, and renovations have increased its capacity to 88,548, growing with the team over the decades.

Florida Gators Football History

The University of Florida has continuously fielded a football team since its inception in 1906, with the notable exception of the 1943 season due to the outbreak of World War II. As charter members of the Southeastern Conference in 1932, the Florida Gators have long-standing rivalries against such schools as Auburn, LSU and Tennessee. The Gators have won three national titles (in 1996, 2006 and 2008) in addition to eight SEC titles and 16 divisional titles since 1991. Three quarterbacks have won the Heisman Trophy for the Gators, including future legendary Florida coach Steve Spurrier in 1966, Danny Wuerffel in 1996 and Tim Tebow in 2007.

The Florida Gators have intense rivalries against in-state non-conference schools Florida State and the University of Miami, along with other schools in the SEC, but their archnemeses are the University of Georgia's Bulldogs, who face Florida annually at Jacksonville's TIAA Bank Field. The Florida-Georgia rivalry is so bitter that neither school can agree on when it started, with Georgia contending that a game played against a predecessor in 1904 was the beginning, and Florida stating that the two schools first officially met in 1915. Florida-Georgia is one of the few remaining neutral site rivalry games in college football, and with divisional, conference and national title hopes often hanging in the balance, it remains one of the most important rivalries in the sport.

    Game vs Social Media

by Grizz on 10/10/23Ben Hill Griffin Stadium - Gainesville

I will admit that it’s been a while since I had been at the Swamp. The football game experience was great but there is work to be done there obviously. The environment will probably keep me from ever returning. Someone obviously thinks we need to be constantly entertained. Maybe it’s a product of a newer generation….I find it annoying and distracting. The constant loud music between snaps, the DJ, the T-Shirts into the stands, the 50/50 event, the stadium wide advertising campaigns made it difficult to watch the game. Even the field announcer provides no relevant information…the siren and his long drawn out third down “announcement” is awful, even more annoying and unnecessary….. like we don’t know it’s third down, please. I really do understand the need for change but what I experienced was quite aways away from traditional Gator Game Days. I suppose that it as always comes down to money….I’m concerned the constant pursuit for money and the idea that we need to be constantly entertained will lead the game to a place that will leave the game as I once knew it. Where the pure enjoyment of just being there was more than enough.

    Visitor Friendly

by Kela on 9/26/23Ben Hill Griffin Stadium - Gainesville

Great campus and Venue. They need more signs and staff to be more visitor friendly. For instance went to a 2nd parking Garage and were denied because we “needed” a pass but there we NO signs stating that. Staff and people working event could be nicer instead of having attitudes when we are trying to maneuver around. I will state that the young lady at Garage 9 was delightful and so very helpful. I also wish the seating was spaced out a bit more .

    Great, but uncomfortable

by Super Gator on 9/26/23Ben Hill Griffin Stadium - Gainesville

Gators games are always a blast. The problem is the seats are uncomfortable, not enough concessions or bathrooms.

It’s great to be a Florida Gator fan…from afar.

by Jay on 9/20/23Ben Hill Griffin Stadium - Gainesville

I have been a Gator fan for most of my life, but I never attended a game in person. As my daughter is now attending UF, I thought it appropriate and necessary to do so. As it was my first, so it will be my last. I understand being excited and “into” the game, but I haven’t experienced this level of obnoxiousness even at NFL games. I’m not talking about the college students—they have an excuse to be stupid and annoying. I’m talking about 60-year old men (grey haired and aged, so if not 60–had a rough life). Screaming at every down, chanting crass things about refs, and pushing past everyone every 10 minutes to refill on beer—and they’re not thin—is not acceptable even at a football game. Grow up. Yes, I’m no fun, yes, I’m stuck up, yes, I’m an idiot for thinking a game could be fun and classy. That’s why I’ll leave it to the trash to enjoy. I’ll watch it on my TV at home. Go Gators, but not Gator fans.

Great music, entertainment & fan involvement

by Great College Football Experience on 9/20/23Ben Hill Griffin Stadium - Gainesville

Great music, entertainment between plays and at halftime and time-outs, and fan involvement. We took 3 people who had never been to a big D1 college football game and they couldn't believe what an amazing experience it was. The fans sing and cheer and do an amazing Tom Petty tribute.

    Fantastic Event

by Elnwunne on 9/12/23Ben Hill Griffin Stadium - Gainesville

This was my first football game at "The Swamp"and it was a memorable one. The crowd was very engaged and overall atmosphere was excellent. The seats can be uncomfortable for some so it is wise to rent the seat cushions that provide excellent back support and are affordable at $10 apiece. The parents' section E that we sat in was very good considering I certainly did not want to stand throughout the event, which is usually the case in some parts of the arena. Some fans just don't care to sit at all and stand throughout.

    Bad Seats

by Phil on 11/15/22Ben Hill Griffin Stadium - Gainesville

The seats I bought were the first row behind student sections, who stood on their seats the whole game. We couldn't see the game, even when standing. Warning should be given when purchasing these seats, that they are poor views.

by First game on 11/15/22Ben Hill Griffin Stadium - Gainesville

Trying to found parking was a nightmare for the first time i was there. It took an hour to first parking. Inside the stadium there was no one to ask if you had general questions like were the seats are or what gate do i enter so it like seek and found mission to found our seats. Once at our seats it was great seats and good view of the field.
