About

Florence and the Machine in Concert

There’s a reason why South London musicians Florence Welch and Isabella “The Machine” Summers, a.k.a. Florence and the Machine, have filled stadiums, amphitheaters, and concert halls worldwide to max capacity. Ask any fan and they’ll tell you that their lush, genre-defying indie art rock sounds even better live than on their multi award-winning studio albums. Indeed, their reputation for putting on phenomenal shows has fans eagerly anticipating tour dates and pouncing on tickets as soon as they’re available. Why such devotion? Florence’s energetic, fiery stage presence matches her signature crimson tresses, adding that much more drama to such orchestral gems as “Cosmic Love,” “Dog Days Are Over,” “No Light, No Light,” “Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up)”—just to name a few. What’s more, their artful, literary lyrics, soaring vocals, and theatrical concerts have caused critics to draw comparisons to Kate Bush and Siouxsie and the Banshees. However, despite their old school appeal, their style is fresh enough to attract fans of Adele, Amy Winehouse, and Beyoncé (who also counts herself as a hug Florence fan).

    Hauntingly Beautiful!!

by JillFrost on 4/11/10Kool Haus - Toronto

I'd never heard of the British 20-something and her band before. A friend of mine, visiting from England, heard they were playing and asked if we would join her. I'm SO glad we did! Florences voice was amazing and the powerful voice and sound seems to come to her with ease! Her band is amazing as well and the harp adds an interesting and enchanting sound to her songs. Definately recommend! Bring the boyfriend too, even he'd like seeing this band on the brink of becoming famous in North America :D

    Florence: Good but not Great

by passivewatcher on 4/11/10Terminal 5 - New York

The show was relatively packed and completely sold out, so I figured it would be a great show. However I got to the venue a little late, after the opening band had already left. While I realize that isn't the ideal way to watch a show, I figured I'd still be blown away by the acoustics of Florence's amazing voice. Despite having a decent space in the right gallery off the stage, I could hardly hear anything except for blaring bass. Sad. But Florence is still great!

    Florence was Great

by Anonymous on 4/11/10Terminal 5 - New York

Florence was fantastic. Holy Hail was totally forgettable. One of the worst opening acts I've seen. But Florence was great. The sound mix was much better than I thought it might be after seeing other acts at Terminal 5-- the vocals often get lost, and hers didn't.

Florence Gave New York a REAL show!!

    by kah628 on 4/10/10Terminal 5 - New York

Amazing, i love the music and her personality. She's an incredibly humble and grateful person. The show was insane. From her vocals, to the lighting to the instruments everything was pitch perfect. Florence even had us jumping up and down at one point, she's so loveable. I hope they really flourish in America with their next album. Amazing set of lungs on her!

Florence + the Machine are by far the best band I have ever seen live. This was my third time seeing them and yes, the third time was a charm. Florence Welch is an incredibly talented vocalist.

    Florence the Goddess

by MusicJax on 4/10/10Terminal 5 - New York

I saw the saviour...of music. A goddess and her machine performed her "Lungs" out last night and blew the roof off Terminal 5 in the city. No words can describe it. No concert I've seen can compare. Her voice, her energy, her presence, her band, her songs. Her VOICE-beautiful, bold, enormous - like an angel with muscles on a mission - amazing! The most unreal musical phenomenon that not enough people are listening to: FLORENCE + THE MACHINE!!

    Florence has lungs!

by Ruffables on 4/10/10Terminal 5 - New York

Florence Welsh is a riveting singer and a gracefully entertaining performer. Her songs are big and have flow and energy. The lighting was really effective and I loved her backdrop. The band was understated but that left alot of room for Florence. Her outfit was very engaging and I recently saw Lady Gaga with many costume changes. I enjoyed that but I was quite happy that Florence just stayed with us in her white, feathery garb. The only thing I would advise audience members to do at Terminal 5 is avoid staying at the back bar because you really can't hear in this location. You can see quite well but I would not stay in that spot again. The sound doesn't make it all the way plus there is a lot of talking. Naturally, people socialize at a bar! but that's not why I was there. I would definitely go to Terminal 5 again. In fact, I'll be going to the New Pornographers soon. I look forward to Florence's next album.

    Florence is a Machine

    by KV531 on 4/10/10Terminal 5 - New York

The concert was an amazing experience. Quality of the performers blew my mind. Terminal 5 is a great establishment, and held a lot of people. (I wish there wouldn't have been so many people there)

    Florence Rules

by HiddenWriter on 4/10/10Terminal 5 - New York

Great show, fabulously creative artist and extremely high energy. She had New York in the palm of her little hand. Would have preferred a higher quality sound, maybe it was the acoustics but the overall vibe was enthralling.

Florence was fine, the acoustics in venue bad

by Horizonista on 4/10/10Terminal 5 - New York

Florence and her band gave it their all, which was anticipated. Enjoyed the energy of both them and the crowd. But Terminal 5's acoustics (or the soundsystem) was pretty bad. Alternately muffled or bombastic, making Florence hard to understand. We moved about the venue to find a 'better spot' throughout the concert ... the ground floor, the 2nd floor; etc., settling on an area near the bar that was less crowded, but there we could only see the muddy picture on the screens, which make the stage seem a football field away, when in fact it is really quite nearby. Sonically and visually confusing. And disappointing. The act was good, the setting was less so.

    started and ended incredibly early

by cccccx on 4/10/10Terminal 5 - New York

It may have been a good concert but as she started and finished incredibly early I missed 80% of the show. I go to shows about once a month and I've never had the experience where the main act is fully finished 3 hours after the door opening time. very disappointing.

    Florence Rocked!!

by flyboynyc on 4/10/10Terminal 5 - New York

She had great energy and got the crowd bouncing on her command. There is a bar as well as a rooftop deck at Terminal 5 and most people were enjoying a drink during the show. Even Florence herself had a couple of drinks in between songs. It was one of her bandmates' birthday so she got the whole crowd to sing Happy Birthday to him.
