About

Florence and the Machine in Concert

There’s a reason why South London musicians Florence Welch and Isabella “The Machine” Summers, a.k.a. Florence and the Machine, have filled stadiums, amphitheaters, and concert halls worldwide to max capacity. Ask any fan and they’ll tell you that their lush, genre-defying indie art rock sounds even better live than on their multi award-winning studio albums. Indeed, their reputation for putting on phenomenal shows has fans eagerly anticipating tour dates and pouncing on tickets as soon as they’re available. Why such devotion? Florence’s energetic, fiery stage presence matches her signature crimson tresses, adding that much more drama to such orchestral gems as “Cosmic Love,” “Dog Days Are Over,” “No Light, No Light,” “Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up)”—just to name a few. What’s more, their artful, literary lyrics, soaring vocals, and theatrical concerts have caused critics to draw comparisons to Kate Bush and Siouxsie and the Banshees. However, despite their old school appeal, their style is fresh enough to attract fans of Adele, Amy Winehouse, and Beyoncé (who also counts herself as a hug Florence fan).

FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE WAS AMAZINGLY BRILLIANT

    by atimari2010 on 4/10/10Terminal 5 - New York

Florence Welsh was mesmerizing. I had the best time I ever had at a concert. Her lyrics and her voice are so powerful. Florence + the Machine were and are amazing. Everything about them made me smile. I was five people away from the stage and she was very nice to fans and personable. She seemed genuinely blown away by the amount of support she got in NYC. I would see her again and again!!!

    Completely Amazing.

by Barley12567 on 4/7/10Theatre of Living Arts - Philadelphia

Okay, where do I begin! My sister and our friend arrived at the TLA around 7:30, and the show started at 8. So we slid our way to the front and were behind just one row of people holding onto the railing. Amazing view of the stage and, eventually Florence. :) She came out and the whole audience just erupted in cheering and clapping and screaming. It was awesome, and that lasted for a good 2 minutes. Florence has a stage presence, (and outfits) like no artist I've seen before. She sang 2 songs, including my favorite (Kiss With a Fist) and then she talked to the audience, and she admitted having a little cough, but she could still sing. She talks so quietly, but her signing voice makes the room shake. The band and songs were fantastic, as any fan of Florence and the Machine would expect. But what I enjoyed most was Florence's stage presence. She would jump, twirl, and dance her crazy way and it was impossible for you to take your eyes off her, it was addicting! The TLA was packed and when the band did their last song Philly screamed for an encore, stomping loud to get the band to come back for an encore, and they sung You've Got the Love for the last song I believe, but this was three days ago and since I have bad vision I couldn't see the set list! But, half way through the concert Florence thanked her family who were there and dedicated 'I'm not Calling You a Liar' to them, it was cute. I would definitely see them again, and again...and again! It was so damn good.

Absolutely incredible. Florence has a phenomenal voice that sounds just as amazing live as it does recorded, if not better. She puts everything into it and performs every second of being on stage. I had the greatest time at her show and would recommend it to anyone, even if they aren't familiar with her music.

Times have apparently changed at the TLA. I thought it was odd when I handed my ticket to the woman at the door and didn't have my bag searched and wasn't patted down. I didn't have any contraband on me, but once the concert had begun, I'd realized that there were other concertgoers that did. The strong smell of illegal substances was obnoxious and made me feel sick to my stomach, but I guess it's par for the course. Maybe I'm just too old for this and maybe the times are changing, but of all the times I've been to a show at the TLA, this is the first time I've experienced it. The show itself was incredible, the sound was pretty great except for when Florence was speaking on the microphone. I could barely hear her. Her sound was excellent and the band was great, and outside of the annoying external elements, the show was fantastic!

Florence and the Machine Rocks! TLA does not.

by EmGibbs on 4/6/10Theatre of Living Arts - Philadelphia

I would see Florence and the Machine again in a heartbeat! She rocks -- the band rocks! I will not however be seeing her or anyone else at the Theater of Living Arts -- the sound was disappointingly muddy and levels were off. Next time I will stick to NYC venues I know have better sound.

This show was amazing! Florence is great live, she is very interactive with the crowd and very energetic on stage. Her voice sounds just as good live as it does in the studio...maybe even better!

    Wow!

by Marcie99 on 4/6/10Theatre of Living Arts - Philadelphia

The turn out was amazing, and for good reason. Florence was haunting and thunderous, and head thrashing....everything I hoped she would be. I don't know how she will still have a voice tomorrow, but everyone seeing her will not be disappointed!

Florence Welch's stentorian voice peerless. Perfect in small venues like the Bowery Ballroom, where her passion really gets through to every single member of the audience. Simply unforgettable.
