About

Fiddler on the Roof on Tour

In Broadway terms, Fiddler on the Roof is a tradition unto itself. The much-loved story of Tevye the milkman's struggle to reconcile old Jewish ways with the modern world opened on Broadway in 1964 and held the record for longest-running musical — with 3,242 performances until it closed in 1970 — for nearly 10 years. The blockbuster won nine Tony Awards — including best musical, direction, and choreography — and has been revived on Broadway five times.

Producer Harold Prince hired director-choreographer Jerome Robbins to bring Sholom Aleichem's turn-of-the-19th-century Yiddish tales of life in the Anatevka shtetl, where existence is "as precarious as a fiddler on the roof," to the stage. Jerry Bock's music and Sheldon Harnick's lyrics illuminated the fading world of East European Jewry, while Joseph Stein's book brought a humorous taste of Jewish comedy's borscht belt. Painter Marc Chagall's blend of Jewish traditionalism and artistic modernism inspired the show's memorable look. Zero Mostel played Tevye, and Beatrice Arthur, of Maude television fame, portrayed Yente the matchmaker.

The most recent revival arrived in 2015, when director Bartlett Sher enhanced the show's authenticity with the help of Israeli-born choreographer Hofesh Shechter. The New York Times praised the new production as "superb" while noting how it recaptured the foot-stomping, hand-waving energy of the original.

Sher's revival, now on tour with Yehezkel Lazarov as Tevye and Maite Uzal as his wife Golde, is delighting audiences with celebratory songs like "Tradition," "If I Were a Rich Man," and "To Life (L'Chaim)," as well as beautiful melodies of love and loss such as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "Far From the Home I Love."

As part of a trend that began with The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz, Fiddler on the Roof fans are dressing up as Anatevkans and belting out tunes during screenings of the show's 1971 film adaptation. Their participatory zeal reflects the devotion the musical has inspired and the power of its music.

"What can we do?" asks Tevye of Golde during a moment of doubt. "It's a new world." One solution is to return to the source for cultural renewal. We may not experience the same problems as shtetl Jews in 1905 did, but Fiddler on the Roof assures us that almost any difficulty can be surmounted with great music and exuberant dancing.

    Fiddler was Fabulous!!!

by JMD3 on 11/9/09Boston Opera House - Boston

The entire experience was fabulous from beginning to end! I have been a fan of Fiddler on the Roof (and especially Topol) since I first saw the movie as a teenager. I had seen the Broadway production once in New York with Harvey Fierstein and was very excited to see it was coming to Boston. The cast was amazing, the music was great. I loved the all the sweet, funny moments Topol wove into the role of Tevya. I can't say enough how much I enjoyed the show!

    As Advertised!

by uxbridgemike on 11/9/09Boston Opera House - Boston

We didn't want to miss the opportunity to see Topol in this tour. Great supporting cast and a truly enjoyable performance. One negative - the Boston Opera House was incredibly warm (a.k.a. HOT) making the experience less than optimal. If you go, dress in layers and be prepared to take it off.

    Topol was fantastic!

by jojo2525 on 11/9/09Boston Opera House - Boston

I was in the last row in the balcony, nonetheless, the impact of this musical was very strong. Topol, although frail-looking but well considering his age, was charismatic and engaging in his performance. With many humerous gestures and looks that made the entire audience giggle, he commanded the stage. Maybe not as strong as in his younger years, but very powerful indeed. I was so glad I was able to see him on stage live and witness a truly wonderful performer.

The cast was fantastic. Of course, Topol is a legend and he did not disappoint, but the entire cast was very talented and their timing flawless. I also thought the staging itself (sets, transitions, etc) was extremely well carried out. The Opera House is a lovely theater, but when the house is packed it shows it's age a little (there isn't enough room between rows). Still, the location was great for this production.

    Topol still has it

by bbostonb on 11/8/09Boston Opera House - Boston

The show was great. I was unsure if Topol would still have a top notch performance in him at 74, he sure did! The cast was perfect, most enjoyable show. The pit band was spot on! Only issue was the temperature in the Boston Opera House. The heat was unbearable, some attendees even left at the intermission as it was so uncomfortable.

    ...we have traditions for everything...

by Michael94 on 11/8/09Boston Opera House - Boston

TOPOL's farewell tour in Fiddler on the Roof was exceptional! Well worth the price of admission. It's hard to believe that this talented actor has been playing the iconic role of Tevye for four decades. To see him back and forth across the stage, belting out those familiar songs, and delivering so many memorable lines, I found it hard to believe that he is 74! So glad I had the opportunity to see the show during its limited engagement in Boston!

    Fiddler On The Roof

by BostonG on 11/8/09Boston Opera House - Boston

A great cast headed by the Fiddler Master himself, Topol. If your artistic sensibilities react more powerfully to simple sets, costumes and well crafted acting, then this is the production for you. It was entertaining from start to finish. If I had one criticism it would be the time allotted for taking care of personal business during intermission. The opera house has far too few bathrooms for that short of an intermission.

Truly an amazing experience, the music, the atmosphere, the acting and of course TOPOL!!! This was a once in a lifetime experience and I will never see it again, because nothing else will live up to this experience. Topol is Teyve, and it was amazing!

The best money I have spent in a long time. The first act was 2 hours and I don't think anyone moved the whole time. The second act was 1 hour and felt like 15 minutes. I'm going to go out and buy the movie. Topol was incredible, along with a talented cast. I have already recommended this play to my friends. INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Topol and company were fabulous!

by FiddlerFan on 11/8/09Boston Opera House - Boston

Of course we love the movie, how could you not? So seeing the live performance was a real treat, but the best part was experiencing Topol's reinactment of the character he has come to be equated with. After all the times he has played the role, his performance last night never seemed tired or phoned in. We were completely swept away. The actress who played his wife couldn't have been more perfect, and the supporting cast was phenomenal. The script is well-written, and the musical numbers are classic, with some rousing others heartwarming, and still others extremely moving. We would recommend this show to anyone!

    Fiddler on the Roof

by cobra07 on 11/8/09Boston Opera House - Boston

Both my wife and I enjoyed this show immensely. We have seen Fiddler on the Roof before but with Theo Bikel but enjoyed it much more this time with Topol as Tevye. All the music and songs and all of the actors and actresses were extremely enjoyable in there rolls. We would recommend this to anyone to go and see.
