Fiddler on the Roof on Tour
In Broadway terms, Fiddler on the Roof is a tradition unto itself. The much-loved story of Tevye the milkman's struggle to reconcile old Jewish ways with the modern world opened on Broadway in 1964 and held the record for longest-running musical — with 3,242 performances until it closed in 1970 — for nearly 10 years. The blockbuster won nine Tony Awards — including best musical, direction, and choreography — and has been revived on Broadway five times.
Producer Harold Prince hired director-choreographer Jerome Robbins to bring Sholom Aleichem's turn-of-the-19th-century Yiddish tales of life in the Anatevka shtetl, where existence is "as precarious as a fiddler on the roof," to the stage. Jerry Bock's music and Sheldon Harnick's lyrics illuminated the fading world of East European Jewry, while Joseph Stein's book brought a humorous taste of Jewish comedy's borscht belt. Painter Marc Chagall's blend of Jewish traditionalism and artistic modernism inspired the show's memorable look. Zero Mostel played Tevye, and Beatrice Arthur, of Maude television fame, portrayed Yente the matchmaker.
The most recent revival arrived in 2015, when director Bartlett Sher enhanced the show's authenticity with the help of Israeli-born choreographer Hofesh Shechter. The New York Times praised the new production as "superb" while noting how it recaptured the foot-stomping, hand-waving energy of the original.
Sher's revival, now on tour with Yehezkel Lazarov as Tevye and Maite Uzal as his wife Golde, is delighting audiences with celebratory songs like "Tradition," "If I Were a Rich Man," and "To Life (L'Chaim)," as well as beautiful melodies of love and loss such as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "Far From the Home I Love."
As part of a trend that began with The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz, Fiddler on the Roof fans are dressing up as Anatevkans and belting out tunes during screenings of the show's 1971 film adaptation. Their participatory zeal reflects the devotion the musical has inspired and the power of its music.
"What can we do?" asks Tevye of Golde during a moment of doubt. "It's a new world." One solution is to return to the source for cultural renewal. We may not experience the same problems as shtetl Jews in 1905 did, but Fiddler on the Roof assures us that almost any difficulty can be surmounted with great music and exuberant dancing.

A great night of musical theatre
by kateryan1 on 11/10/09Boston Opera House - BostonRating: 5 out of 5It was a true joy to see Topol in his farewell performances of "Fiddler on the Roof". I have seen a number of productions of Fiddler and this one was by far the best. Topol still commands the stage with his marvelous basso profundo voice, and his injection of humor into the character of Tevye was a delight. Jamie Davis shone as Hodel - her beautiful voice was wonderful to hear in what is not an easy role. The only criticism I would have is that I thought the Grandma Tzeitel/Fruma Sarah number was a bit rushed. All in all, it was a memorable performance that I will always be glad I was able to attend.
Fiddler on the roof was simply wonderful
by ashliegh on 11/10/09Boston Opera House - BostonRating: 5 out of 5My husband and I were swept of our feet. Topol and the cast were amazing. Topol still looks great and put on a strong performance. Very happy that we went.!!!

Fiddler was "Fabulous"
by Stleo on 11/10/09Boston Opera House - BostonRating: 5 out of 5My husband & I saw this in Boston......what a great performance. It was an honor to see Topol in the lead....after all these years, he's still brilliant. The dancing by the cast was excellent....especially the male dancers at the wedding scene. Would highly recommend this!
Doesn't get any better
by BigFanOfFiddlerOnTheRoof on 11/10/09Boston Opera House - BostonRating: 5 out of 5For us, Topol defined the role of Tevye. His on-stage performance was even better than on screen. As my wife put it: "We can never go see Fiddler on the Roof again, nothing will compare to seeing Topol." The rest of the cast was also outstanding, with extra kudos to the roles of Yente and Motel. If you have the chance, see this show. You will be sorry if you don't.

Fiddler on the Roof- Spectacularly Magical
by CNellie on 11/9/09Boston Opera House - BostonRating: 5 out of 5Definitely a dream come true after watching Topol on screen for twenty years it was a blessing to see him. His voice was a gift to my ears. I am thankful to all the cast members as well who have graced the stage with their god-given and hard-earned talents. I was truly in a trance the whole time!
Topol is forever young!
by macyfitz80 on 11/9/09Boston Opera House - BostonRating: 5 out of 5I am so grateful that my husband and I were able to see Topol in his farewell tour of Fiddler on the Roof. This was truly a once in a lifetime experience for us. Topol's energy and trademark voice defies his age. The casting overall was very good. We were especially impressed with the actresses who portrayed the 3 eldest daughters. The sets were simple, but very effective at taking the audience through many different settings. And of course, the classic storyline is one that will remain a classic for many more generations. Though this play tops 3 hours in length, it will leave you wanting more.
Fiddler on the Roof was incredible!
by Morrighan on 11/9/09Boston Opera House - BostonRating: 5 out of 5Fiddler on the Roof was my first theater experience. I've loved the movie for many, many years and couldn't pass up the opportunity to see Topol live. I'm so glad I treated myself to a wonderful evening I'll never forget.
Topol is Tevye! Tevye is Topol!
by isoisa98 on 11/9/09Boston Opera House - BostonRating: 4 out of 5Seeing Fiddler on the Roof without Topol as Tevye would be like watching Raiders of the Lost Ark without Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. Topol is Tevye! Tevye is Topol! See this show now before it is too late. Oh, and if you are up in the balcony of the Boston Opera House, I recommend a small pair of binoculars to catch all the facial expressions of the characters during their dialogues. It definitely adds to the experience and the laughter.
Topol was supurb
by JimOJimO on 11/9/09Boston Opera House - BostonRating: 5 out of 5He was as excellent- if not better than - his original film I saw so many decades ago. He is sooooooooooo good in this role. A must see! His voice ranges with those high pitch laughs to his deep authoritive growl even better than long ago. Will be sorry to see his retire. I have great respect for his abilities and his willingness to share them with us once more. The theater - on the other hand - needs to pay more attention to the heat that was accumulating - too hot! Almost uncomfortable.
Fiddler on the Roof Met All Expectations
by Basil018 on 11/9/09Boston Opera House - BostonRating: 5 out of 5Beautiful show. Not a disappointment to be had. Have seen the movie many times and sometimes doing so you miss the character portrayals you have become familiar with but each actor fulfilled the personality. Topol is Tevye even after 40 years! Marvelous.

Once in a lifetime experience!!
by HomeschoolingMama on 11/9/09Boston Opera House - BostonRating: 5 out of 5I brought my mother, my 10 year old son, and my 6 year old son...we went mainly because of my 6 year old. Fiddler on the Roof is his favorite movie, as it has been for years. When we saw that Topol was starring in Fiddler on the Roof, and that it was his final tour, we just had to get tickets. And we are so glad we did!! The music was powerful, the jokes were hysterical, the acting was phenomenal! Topol was just amazing! What a treat it was to see him life after watching him on the DVD on TV after all these years! My boys had wished they could have met Topol to tell him just how much it his movie means to them, and how much it means to them to have been able to see him live!!! Absolutely amazing!! I only wish we could afford to see it again, once more before they leave Boston...only sit closer to the stage so my little one could see better (we had quite a few tall folks in front of us and therefor had to keep adjusting him to he could see...even with the booster seat). Thank you Topol for a wonderful performance, and for this once-in-a-lifetime experience that we will never ever forget...which my little one surely won't as he lost a tooth during the last act. He'll cherish that tooth forever!

LOVED IT! I saw the movie hundreds of times. This was my first time seeing it on Broadway. I can't imagine seeing it without Topol. His voice is just as strong as in the movie. I can't believe I saw him live!!!! He still has plenty of energy which I wasn't expecting. There was more comedy than in the movie and I appreciated it because the themes are pretty heavy so it was a good balance. The cast in general was really good. The Russian dancing during To Life and the bottle dancing during the wedding were fun to watch. Topol carried the play really well as expected. Wish I could see it again!
TOPOL in Fiddler on the Roof Better than the Film

Fiddler on the Roof went above and beyond!
by ciocic on 11/9/09Boston Opera House - BostonRating: 4 out of 5I saw the movie at age 10 and then saw the off Broadway production several years ago at the Bushnell in Hartford, CT...how excited I was to see the tour come to Boston. Loved the performance! The Opera House really sets the stage for theatrical beauty even before the show starts. Scenery was minimal, but enough to set the tone of the show. Singing, dancing and performance were really terrific...couldn't have asked for a nicer show to see. With so much junk and garbage on TV--I got my money's worth AND enjoyed a beautiful performance. Topol is the heart and soul of this production. He puts every ounce of his energy into his role --and he has truely made it his own.
