Fiddler on the Roof on Tour

In Broadway terms, Fiddler on the Roof is a tradition unto itself. The much-loved story of Tevye the milkman's struggle to reconcile old Jewish ways with the modern world opened on Broadway in 1964 and held the record for longest-running musical — with 3,242 performances until it closed in 1970 — for nearly 10 years. The blockbuster won nine Tony Awards — including best musical, direction, and choreography — and has been revived on Broadway five times.

Producer Harold Prince hired director-choreographer Jerome Robbins to bring Sholom Aleichem's turn-of-the-19th-century Yiddish tales of life in the Anatevka shtetl, where existence is "as precarious as a fiddler on the roof," to the stage. Jerry Bock's music and Sheldon Harnick's lyrics illuminated the fading world of East European Jewry, while Joseph Stein's book brought a humorous taste of Jewish comedy's borscht belt. Painter Marc Chagall's blend of Jewish traditionalism and artistic modernism inspired the show's memorable look. Zero Mostel played Tevye, and Beatrice Arthur, of Maude television fame, portrayed Yente the matchmaker.

The most recent revival arrived in 2015, when director Bartlett Sher enhanced the show's authenticity with the help of Israeli-born choreographer Hofesh Shechter. The New York Times praised the new production as "superb" while noting how it recaptured the foot-stomping, hand-waving energy of the original.

Sher's revival, now on tour with Yehezkel Lazarov as Tevye and Maite Uzal as his wife Golde, is delighting audiences with celebratory songs like "Tradition," "If I Were a Rich Man," and "To Life (L'Chaim)," as well as beautiful melodies of love and loss such as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "Far From the Home I Love."

As part of a trend that began with The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz, Fiddler on the Roof fans are dressing up as Anatevkans and belting out tunes during screenings of the show's 1971 film adaptation. Their participatory zeal reflects the devotion the musical has inspired and the power of its music.

"What can we do?" asks Tevye of Golde during a moment of doubt. "It's a new world." One solution is to return to the source for cultural renewal. We may not experience the same problems as shtetl Jews in 1905 did, but Fiddler on the Roof assures us that almost any difficulty can be surmounted with great music and exuberant dancing.

  • Mediocre production

by McRaj0306 on 2/15/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

Having never seen a live production of Fiddler on the Roof, I was very excited to see this show. In fact, I bullied my husband into going with me. Thank goodness we got tickets for 50% off, or I would be really ticked off at the waste of money. The show was entertaining enough, but that's hardly difficult with the inherent timeless story and beautiful score. The orchestra was perfect; most of the performers were good (none stellar, but good). However, I can't figure out why Harvey Fierstein was chosen for the lead role. OK, so he looks like Tevya should look and he's Jewish, but his voice is so raspy and distinct that it clashes with the other voices and grates on the nerves. Harvey did incorporate some distinct humor, which was a nice addition, but didn't outweigh the effects of his unpleasant voice in my opinion. The other factor that detracted from the experience was Golden Gate Theater itself, or more specifically, fellow patrons. Upon walking into the theater, the pungent aroma of alcohol wafting from pre-inebriated theater goers hit us like a ton of bricks. It's also sad to see that most people just don't dress up to go out anymore. I wasn't expecting evening gowns, but it would be nice if people would leave the sweatshirts at home and treat the theater like it's something special. I'm just old-fashioned that way. Overall, I'd say that if you get discount tickets and don't expect the show to blow you away, then go and you'll be entertained but don't bother to get dressed up--you'll feel out of place. I would never pay the full price for this show.

  • Fiddler on the Roof was sensational!

by steverino12 on 2/15/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

After so many years of seeing Fidlder the movie, this was the first time seeing it live on stage. It did not disapoint in the least. The staging was inventive. Fierstein was splended as was the whole cast. The story was as moving and touching as ever with beautiful music and dancing.

  • Fiddler on the Roof EXCeLLEnT

by Parentof10yo on 2/15/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

I took my 10 year old daughter. While she didn't understand all of the humor, she (we) really enjoyed the singing and dancing. We could see it over and over. The dancing was fantastic and it was great to hear all of the familiar songs.

  • a fiddler worth seeing

by mahalia on 2/15/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

overall, this was a very satisfying fiddler on the roof - i laughed (often), i cried, the packed audience gave the show a standing ovation. i'd gone with low expectations because of a lukewarm review i read in the chron, but i must say i disagree with that review completely: although tevye's voice is indeed very raspy, his comic timing is impeccable; golde & yente were wonderful; all 5 daughters were excellent and the 3 suitors, while not superstars, all gave fine, solid performances. this must be the 6th time (at least) i've seen the show; it was my husband's 1st; our boys (10 & 12) had never even heard of it. all 4 of us loved it. my star-wars-loving 10-yr-old turned to me just before the intermission & said, "mom, this is really good!!"

  • Harvey Firestein was the greatest!

by Red99 on 2/15/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

The sets were "old school" in that there was no fireworks or things flying through the air. The story is about poverty and that was portrayed well. The dancing was exceptional!

  • Timeless Fiddler Continues to Please

by JollyKickerbacker on 2/15/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

This production of the classic Fiddler proves, once again, that we all have lessons to be learned and that the greatest happiness comes from an open mind; one that is willing to accept our differences, to accept change, and to not take ourselves too seriously. At the same time, it reminds us - lest we forget - of the sufferings that we inflict on one another for the sake of stubborn ideals from a bygone era. Harvey Fierstein, gravelly and growly as he is, was a terrific Tevia. His facial expressions and body language spoke even more eloquently than his voice. His delivery and timing was perfect. Only another week left, so make this one a priority!

  • Fiddler on the Roof was Unforgetable

by NanaStarr on 2/14/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

My neice and I went to see Fiddler on the Roof at the Golden Gate Theatre in San Francisco. It was a time I will cherish for always. From the moment we walked in the doors, the staff were very attentive and courteous. The theatre was very nostalgic, clean, and inviting. Then the curtain went up! I was pleased to see that they stayed close to the original script of the movie. It was a "family friendly" atmosphere and story. The only thing negative that I can say is - it did run a little long. The play started at 8:00 and we did not get out of there until 11:00. 'On the other hand' - I would highly recommend that you take the time to see this heartwarming story.

  • OUTSTANDING MUSICAL IN EVERY WAY!!!

by MBAVEC on 2/14/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Harvey Fierstein is a marvelous performer and a jewel of San Francisco! It was too bad though that the stage was too small to allow the excellent dancers enough room to perform. Just a comment about the venue of the Golden Gate Theatre: It is dilapidated and way overdue to be closed for a lengthy and overdue period of restoration. It is a very bleak and uncomfortable theatre, and one that San Francisco should be ashamed of.

  • Harvey was Great

by longcutaj on 2/14/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

This was a terrific production with good energy and believable characters San Francisco Bay Area theater goers should attend-the critic I read missed the mark completely, theater had a lot of empty seats and that is a shame

  • Fiddler on the Roof-still great, in spite of voice

by Cherylbarrel on 2/14/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

It's a good thing I didn't read the reviews before I bought my tickets and saw Fiddler on the Roof. I loved it! When I first heard Harvey Fierstein speak, I thought "Oh no! I hate his voice!" BUT as Tevye, he more than made up for it in personality, facial expressions and body language. He really was superb! I got used to his voice as the show went on. The rest of the cast was excellent, especially Susan Cella as Golde. The set was cleverly designed and the dancing was great fun! The music is so wonderful! I'm glad I saw Fiddler on the Roof!

  • If you can't get past that is isn't Topol...

by skmaf on 2/14/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

then you will be disappointed. But the script is still the script, and so enjoyable. When "If I Were a Rich Man" was preformed I knew I was going to have to adjust my expectations in a huge way. Fierstein has no voice whatsoever and therefore could not match the intensity of this song and so it was quite unremarkable. However, Fierstein created a Teyve that was a bit cute-sy and charming and so he kind of grew on you as the show progressed. The rest of the cast was sufficient to good, especially Motol and Hodal. The choreography was good, and the dancing was good. If you love this play as I do, go and just enjoy the script and try not to think of the Topol Tevye.

Great overall, Harvey a little hard to understand at times. Golden gate is a much better theater than the Orpheum

  • by Anonymous on 2/14/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

Theatre was not the easiest to find & not in the greatest area of SF, but it was a fabulous show that more than made up for the location.

  • fiddler worth seeing

by fortescue on 2/14/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

Overall Fiddler was a moving experience. Although, at times, it was difficult to understand, exactly, what Tevya was saying. I, also, had to get around the fact that he is not the most gifted of singers. I grew up hearing Topol and Herschel Bernardi portraying the role. But, what Mr. Fierstein lacks in singing ability he makes up for in feeling.

The play was wonderful. I loved the scenery. Harvey Fierstein was adorable!

  • Not up to par with other Fiddler productions

by Zackwillow on 2/14/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 2 out of 5

I was disappointed overall with the experience, having expected far more for a San Francisco production. First, the venue, Golden Gate Theatre, seemed run down and has none of the grandeur of other stunning and comfortable theaters. The place seemed "cheap" and the seating was really tight (a place I don't want to go back to). As for the production, I expected more, and better, also because this is San Francisco. I've seen Fiddler several times in different places, and this one seemed (just like the theatre), "cheap". I felt like the production cut corners hugely on costs, and others who have also seen this stage production elsewhere will probably agree. You'll know it when you see it. For anyone dying to see Harvey Fierstein (as Tevye), he was great and those that put this production modified his script a little here and there, which is still true to the production, but sometimes I felt like some of the lines were dumbed-down to appeal to today's American audiences. But still, it was great seeing him on stage. One thing that drove me nuts was that the actual fiddler didn't seem to be playing the fiddle, but rather pretending. I don't feel this production did the creators proper justice with what could have been a stunning, really enjoyable performance. And while I don't mind paying over $100 for each ticket (good seats, true), this show was certainly not worth that price level.

  • Great time at the Golden Gate

WE had a wonderful time at the show yesterday. Harvey and cast were terrific. The story was as good as ever.

  • Harvey Fierstein was the soul of Tevye

by Grandpubha4u on 2/14/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

This rendition of Fiddler was the best I have ever seen, having seen it on Broadway many, many years ago, made possible by the uniqueness of Havey Fierstein. Yes his singing voice was a slight distraction the first time he sang but that melted away as I felt like I was experiencing Tevye for the first time. This performance was memorable but surprisingly not for the music score, which I loved, but rather because I felt I really got to know Tevye and the struggle in a way past performances of the production by other casts had just touched the surface of the characters. I was transported by the entire performance. Thanks for putting your souls into this, a rare thing indeed. But on the one hand......

  • harvey firestein was a hoot

by leslieabby on 2/14/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

originally was specifically going to see topol...didn't even know he was injured. inadvertently found out about harvey and almost didn't go (also had a ticket to wicked same nite)...so glad i went... scenery was delightful and the casting was so close to the movie it was scary!!! after adjusting to harvey's unique voice, i sat back and thoroughly enjoyed his adaptation and humor.

Performance was weak at best, performers lacked energy. Our group of 8 people all agreed it was not a memorable performance. Theatre was also very hot with little or no air conditioning.
