Fiddler on the Roof on Tour

In Broadway terms, Fiddler on the Roof is a tradition unto itself. The much-loved story of Tevye the milkman's struggle to reconcile old Jewish ways with the modern world opened on Broadway in 1964 and held the record for longest-running musical — with 3,242 performances until it closed in 1970 — for nearly 10 years. The blockbuster won nine Tony Awards — including best musical, direction, and choreography — and has been revived on Broadway five times.

Producer Harold Prince hired director-choreographer Jerome Robbins to bring Sholom Aleichem's turn-of-the-19th-century Yiddish tales of life in the Anatevka shtetl, where existence is "as precarious as a fiddler on the roof," to the stage. Jerry Bock's music and Sheldon Harnick's lyrics illuminated the fading world of East European Jewry, while Joseph Stein's book brought a humorous taste of Jewish comedy's borscht belt. Painter Marc Chagall's blend of Jewish traditionalism and artistic modernism inspired the show's memorable look. Zero Mostel played Tevye, and Beatrice Arthur, of Maude television fame, portrayed Yente the matchmaker.

The most recent revival arrived in 2015, when director Bartlett Sher enhanced the show's authenticity with the help of Israeli-born choreographer Hofesh Shechter. The New York Times praised the new production as "superb" while noting how it recaptured the foot-stomping, hand-waving energy of the original.

Sher's revival, now on tour with Yehezkel Lazarov as Tevye and Maite Uzal as his wife Golde, is delighting audiences with celebratory songs like "Tradition," "If I Were a Rich Man," and "To Life (L'Chaim)," as well as beautiful melodies of love and loss such as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "Far From the Home I Love."

As part of a trend that began with The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz, Fiddler on the Roof fans are dressing up as Anatevkans and belting out tunes during screenings of the show's 1971 film adaptation. Their participatory zeal reflects the devotion the musical has inspired and the power of its music.

"What can we do?" asks Tevye of Golde during a moment of doubt. "It's a new world." One solution is to return to the source for cultural renewal. We may not experience the same problems as shtetl Jews in 1905 did, but Fiddler on the Roof assures us that almost any difficulty can be surmounted with great music and exuberant dancing.

  • The Play was good but the "Star" was not.

by UnderStudy on 2/17/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

Fiddler on the Roof is a wonderful musical but the "star" (Harvey F.) of the show was not meant for the part. His singing voice was poor, he didn't project well and often cut off his lines. Many times I couldn't hear his line. It got to be very annoying. He was supposed to be the "big attraction" but he was more of a distraction. The play suffered a lot because he was chosen as the lead actor. The rest of the cast was first rate. The "Russian" dancers were superb. The cast singing was wonderful and the lady who played Golda was excellent. Next time, bring in an unknown with talent to play the lead and I think people will be happier overall.

A wonderful show all around. Great performances by the 3 daughters, Yente was terrific, Motyl was also awesome, Golde was a bit weak, a was the Constable...Harvy (Tevya) played the part beautifully, albeit his singing was very bad. Also, he stuck his tongue out at God several times. Not something Tevya's character would ever do. I LOVED the dream scene...well done by all the cast. In spite of my few complaints, it's one of those plays that moves me every time I see it to tears. I recommend it to all.

  • Wish we had stayed home!

We have seen this several times over the years and I have appeared twice in amateur productions. Tevya was disappointing to say the least-voice unable to do justice to the low tones and too cutsey a portrayal for the role. A weak cast. Did love the bottle dance and the actor who did the butcher.

The leading male needs a strong voice. This one sounded like he ate sandpaper. It was terrible whenever he opened his mouth. Beautiful songs ruined! The rest of the cast was great, so too the sets.

I enjoyed the actual show. The balcony view was not great. We had a very high maintenance group in front of us and we didn't have a clear view.

  • Fierstein was good and bad

by WiBiC on 2/16/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

Harvey Fierstein's acting skills were quite good - I thought he made a convincing Tevye, despite his personal lifestyle preferences. I overhead some others in the theatre during the intermission who felt his perfomance was feminine and counter to that of the character; however, I did not find this to be the case. Nonetheless, I was very disappointed by his singing. He was barely able to maintain pitch at several points and seemed to be singing a full octave below what would be typical for his songs. The singing skill of all the other cast members were far superior to his. Given that many of the most touching moments of this musical are conveyed by the singing role - I found it a bit disturbing that Mr. Fierstein would have been chosen for this role (maybe he had a cold?). Anyway, I would have rated the show a 4 or 5 had it not been for the mediocre singing....

  • The Fiddler fell off the roof!

by EJeff on 2/16/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 2 out of 5

The SF version of Fiddler on the Roof was a combination of a very week cast and Harvey Firestein who is blessed with an entertaining personality could not melodically carry off the majority of songs requiring a better singing voice. All of the male cast members were dull both with their lines and an inability to put over a song. Motel and Perchick were both forgettable. Golde was mediocre at best...I have never heard a more boring version of "Do you Love Me?". Yenta was too old and nondescript. The daughters were the best of the lot at least when it came to singing, all were pleasant to listen to however their ability to be believable characters acting wise was the opposite. The second act was almost unwatchable...tender and sad scenes that brought tears to my eyes in the past were just read and not spoken. I felt we way overpaid for what we got. Maybe this cast should move the show to Branson. Our pre-theatre dining experience was far more memorable.

  • Fiddler

by dougjohnson on 2/15/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 1 out of 5

Harvey Fierstein is the wrong choice for Tevye. The voice is too raspy, very difficult to understand. He really loses it when trying to hit lower notes. He is not a singer. If I Were A Rich Man was too fast. I have been involved in over 100 Fiddler Productions (Live Performances), in the orchestra. I have seen many Reb Tevye's. This is a mistake. And I love Harvey Fierstein and all his other works. Please change to a diferent Reb Tevye. Rest of cast/orchestra is fine.

  • Harvey 'is' Fiddler!

by CSLJ on 2/15/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

My husband, our 17 year old daughter and I loved Fiddler. Harvey was fabulous--his timing, facial expressions--his acting--just made the whole experience funny, touching, enjoyable and everything in between at the same time! The other actors were also very talented as well. It was particularly meaningful for us as our daughter's Boston area boarding school is going to be doing this in May and she is in it! Thanks for a wonderful afternoon.

HF was terribly miscast. He is a good actor and looked the part, but his voice detracted. It is not his fault. There is clearly something wrong with his voice, but what were the producers of this show thinking? The rest of the cast did a good job, but I expected much more from a broadway production of this play. I was very dissappointed.

I loved this production of Fiddler on the Roof. I loved Harvey Fierstein in it. His portrayal Tevye leaned toward comic, but he never lost his grip on the story's hopeful and tragic message. His banter with God and with Golde was petulant and buoyant, and though he was traditional and stern, Tevye's kind nature and love of his daughters was evident during scenes of emotional conflict. If you go expecting to hear Tevye sung exactly as Topol sings it on the record, you may be disappointed, as Harvey Fierstein's deep, distinctive, wonderfully gravelly voice makes this production his own. Forget about Topol and embrace Harvey's skill and that of the rest of the glorious cast, and you'll be treated to a beautiful, emotionally moving production.

  • Just dreadful

by binky2 on 2/15/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 1 out of 5

Harvey Fierstein's mugging, hocking, and scenery chewing were so over the top it was hilarious to watch. His "singing" made my ears bleed. The rest of the cast was no great shakes either, but even the best could not have rescued this dreary and unimaginative production. Half the audience fled Anatevka before the villagers did.

  • Great performance with a Fiddler on the Roof.

by crossmen96 on 2/15/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

Great music, great storyline and an opportunity to see it in a great facility.

  • I'm going to see it again next week!!!!

by baciobacio on 2/15/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Fiddler on the Roof has never been so spectacular! I was amazed and entertained from the first seconds until the curtains fell. Harvey Fienstein and the entire cast was phenomenal! Fienstein was made for that role!

  • AN ENJOYABLE EVENING!

by Visiting4theWeekend on 2/15/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

We were visiting in SF, and the timing worked out for us to attend ... and we're glad we did. I could recollect many of the words of the various songs (from a long ago TV version). The cast really drew you in to the story of this family -- its traditions and hardships -- which made it all that much more touching. We ate at a very small, but very good, Asian restaurant just up the street one block (terrific Imperial Rolls). We don't think this play's in town for long, so if you're local or in town visiting, just go!

  • Fiddler was lukewarm.

by sarmichmor on 2/15/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

Harvey Fierstein playing Tevye was horrible! His voice was obnoxious to listen to & his singing was terrible. It was a real disappointment for someone growing up on the film with Topol. I have been waiting to see Fiddler in theatre for years & I was disappointed. Plus, the people in front of us didn't have any ettiquette about obstructing the view of the ones behind them. People please, don't lean forward in your seats. No one behind you can see. We even asked them to lean back & they wouldn't do it.

  • I would spend the money and go AGAIN!

by Itomne on 2/15/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

WONDERFUL adaptation and production and everything! Loved it! Loved it! Loved it!

  • Fierstein cannot talk

by Bobj123 on 2/15/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

Nice production, but for a show that relies heavily on the narrative of the protagonist Tevya, Fierstein is problematic. I was first row mezzanine and frequently had a difficult time making out Fierstein's words. Sometimes he just croaked. That is funny for only so long. I think this dragged the whole production down. Was still entertaining but his voice was hard to take and frequently unintelligible. The other cast members were good.
