Esperanza is an amazing bassist..she just won a Grammy.. having said that, the audience for this performance was probably newcomers to her and her style of music, I think she should have introduced each song with a short description of the song and why she was playing it. The concert went on ,song after song till the end with very little dialogue or connection to the audience.

  • Amazing show!

Esperanza is so incredibly talented! She plays with such power and sings like a bird. Definitely see her if you get the chance.

Wasn't sure what to expect, I had heard some of her work on the radio and knew she won best artist Grammy this year. But I was very pleasantly surprised to hear rich and deep extended developments on well defined themes. The concert had an arc and felt very personal. My happiest thought about her and her performance was that this work is sophisticated beyond her physical age. It has enduring qualities that could easily lead to renown.

There is a good reason Esperanza won her Grammy. Her talent is amazing. I am not an avid concert goer, but I am so glad I attended this one. I was so into her music I felt as if I was right there with her singing, although I truly couldn't sing a note if I wanted to. I was mesmerized. For anyone who has any appreciation of music in general or jazz in particular, seeing Esperanza Spalding in concert is a must!

  • Raw talent

Ms. Spalding is one of the brightest musical talents of her generation. It was a pleasure to see her. The Music Hall however was not the best venue and the crowd was terribly rude.

  • Ms. Spalding is amazing!

Ms. Spalding puts on a fantastic show! I had first seen her on the David Letterman show a few months back and thought she was great but to see her live with her band is a whole different story! She's not only musically talented but is vivacious in her playing and brings great life to her music. The other two gentleman playing with her (keyboardist/drummer) complemented her very well. She brings tremondous life to jazz music and is highly recommended!

I have been a fan of Esperanza Spalding for almost 2 years now and have been dying to see her perform live. The wait was not in vain! I only wish she would have done some of her work from previous albums as well, but the performance was amazing. She commanded the audience's attention and the Lincoln Theatre was a perfect venue for this performance. Lastly, to top it all off, Gretchen Parlato made a special guest appearance. Just wonderful!

  • Front seat to a master's class!

I was swept away by the force of Ms. Esperanza Spalding! I was awed as I watched her weave a tapestry of music, emotions, story telling, humor, class, love and professionalism. I did not like jazz until I met Esperanza!

  • Good

by Bennz on 4/23/10Jo Long Theatre - San AntonioRating: 3 out of 5

I went to see what the hype was all about and she really is talented. Although jazz is not my favorite type of music she did make jazz interesting. I don't know if I would go see her again just because a night of all jazz music was just a bit redundant for me. Her piano player was amazing he played two and sometimes four keyboard instrument during the same song.

  • Esperanza, Ok.

Nice small theatre, she was nice, overtalked a little. Tunes were a little too slow for me. A different tune selection would have made a big difference.

  • Esperanza is incredible!

She...is...AWESOME! She just doesn't play instruments, she makes them come alive as though they're an extension of her body! She can get funky, play soul, jazz but also get soft and smooth if she wants. She is an all-around talent with skillful bandmates and she will go very far at such a young age! Her show is definitely worth it! BTW, I took my wife for our anniversary and she loved the show as well! Highly recommended!

A Don't miss show. Equally adept on electric and acoustic bass. Beautiful voice in English and Portugeese. Great rapport with the audience. She stayed after the show and signed autographs. All types of music sambas, jazz, improv. great trio. Two sets with an intermission and an encore

Esperanza Spalding is a phenomenal artist! Her performance was truly engaging. She is a virtuoso on the bass, a passionate vocalist, and a performer who interacts easily with the audience. Speaking with her after the show was such a treat! What a memorable night!

  • Esperanza, I'm breathless

by Bassboy on 4/17/10Colony Theater - Miami BeachRating: 5 out of 5

She was incredible, she played with complete confidence. You could feel how much she exuded the music. And her musicians went with her so well. It was the drummers first time gigging with her and he did an awesome job. The pianist played some really out there stuff, really dug it. Awesome job Esperanza.

  • Esperanza is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!!!!!!!

by Kelistar on 4/17/10Colony Theater - Miami BeachRating: 5 out of 5

First of all the venue was very, very intimate.....she was gorgeous and her skills playing the bass are out of this world, I literally thought it was going to catch on fire (lol), how fast her hands were going. It was funky and fluid (meaning the music was great to move to)......she was on stage with her pianist and drummer, who were awesome and amazing as well.....though there were only three instrumentalists on stage, the sound was enormous. Overall this performance was by far the best performance I've ever attended. LOVE ESPERANZA!!!!!!

  • Pure Magic!!!!

by Cabinetshop on 4/17/10Colony Theater - Miami BeachRating: 5 out of 5

Magical!!!!!! I've seen Esperanza two times in three months and both concerts were totally different set lists one was a four piece and the other a trio. Both were magical! As a professional jazz singer and guitariast, I know how hard it is to sing and play an instrument at the same time. The bass is so much more difficult to play and sing with. She is incredible as a singer and as a Bass player but what she does with the combination, to me is breathtaking, and awe-inspiring.
