About

Austin, Texas...Eric Johnson has been traveling on a prolific odyssey over the course of more than four decades. Along the way, his creations have encompassed repertoire that cross pollinate genres which include rock, blues, jazz, fusion, soul, folk, new-age, classical and even country. Inevitably, E.J. says it best in sharing, "It really boils down to the music and the song at the end of the day", he explains, "If it doesn't have that it gets boring for me. The most important thing for me is to grow musically and make a more expansive and meaningful artistic statement with every new project".

During the pandemic, the Grammy-winning guitarist, vocalist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist released weekly donation-based "Mini Guitar Lessons" benefiting Food Banks across the country and worked in the studio on previously un-released tracks and new recordings. These tracks resulted in the release of 2 new albums entitled "The Book Of Making" and "Yesterday Meets Today" in July of 2022 on Blue Élan Records. The purchase of both albums includes the keys to a third album, "Takeouts" which includes unreleased and alternate recordings of songs available as an exclusive download.

Throughout his career, Johnson has approached music as a healing force, a way to enhance the listener's consciousness, and conjure joy and inspiration. More than a year into the Pandemic , and because of the Pandemic, he reflects that this approach has become reinforced and more enhanced.

The 2023 Treasure Tour will feature some of his previously unreleased gems, some older classics and some new soon-to-be favorites.

Always a great night with eric johnson!

    by JustAFan67 on 8/11/11Birchmere - Alexandria

The concert started with just eric, an acoustic guitar and a chair. He played some beautiful improv, I always enjoy watching an artist get lost in his music. When he finished he stood up and said "That's the end of the quiet part for tonight". And he was right, the sound levels were up there but not unbearable. eric johnson is a perfectionist when it comes to his tone, and I think that's a good thing. His music is undeniably his and unique. Among his new works he covered the Beatles with Dear Prudence and Hendrix with Are You Experienced. His encore included Cliffs of Dover, which he always makes new and original. Over all, it was a great night, eric was friendly and welcoming, playing right up to the edge of the stage. He also enjoyed talking to the audience and sharing his concerns about the sound levels. I only hope it's not another 5 years before he comes back to the Birchmere.

Another great night with the Tone Master

    by tomG1 on 8/11/11Birchmere - Alexandria

Eric was fantastic. I suppose that would go without saying considering he is one of the premier guitarists of our time. I really appreciated him allowing his 2 other band members to step out and show their chops and talent on their respective instruments as well. They were great and seemed to really enjoy sharing the stage with EJ. The venue at the Birchmere is always good. I was first in line arriving a couple of hours before the doors opened thereby guaranteeing the best seat in the house. I was not disappointed. There were times during the show that I could have literally reached up and touched Eric's guitar while he was playing. There were a couple of sound issues that had Eric looking a bit upset. At times, his sound would just disappear out of the house. That was a bit of a bummer thus the cause for the 4 rather than 5 star rating.

    Eric once again remarkable!

    by Eric4ever on 7/28/11Bluebird Theater - Denver

I've been following Eric's career for over 25 years now and not once has he failed to inspire me. His talent never ceases to amaze me and the sounds from his guitar/s take my mind to heights where no other sounds can compare. I would never give Eric less than five stars for his performances. To me he is truly amazing! He always finds excellent musicians to tour with him as well and this concert was no exception. I enjoyed the blend of rock, jazz, blues and acoustic numbers. It was a very pleasurable evening for myself and a friend who had never seen Eric perform.

    I'm just sayin...

    by stoneman22 on 7/25/11Bluebird Theater - Denver

Eric Johnson is an incredible guitar player... no doubt. Although the BlueBird theater provided an intimate setting to hear and see the show, I personally would not do it again. We waited past 8pm for the show to start and there was an extended break in the middle. To put it bluntly... the house was 'not a rockin' Friday night. Close but we never had lift off.

    Eric Johnson = Amazing!

    by surfer70 on 7/24/11Bluebird Theater - Denver

He is seriously talented! And so was the rest of the band for that matter. Once a child prodigy, now a master's master. His rapid chord changes, flawless arpeggios, perfect harmonics, and smooth melodies will earn the respect of the best-of-the-best! I would recommend this show to anyone. Even those who are not musicians or guitar-lovers will thoroughly enjoy it. The bass player's solo was amazing, as was the drummer's solo...3 ultra-talented, disciplined, and dedicated musicians that will blow you away!

    EJ is always amazing

by TheWrightLady on 7/24/11Bluebird Theater - Denver

We loved that this was an "Evening with Eric", there was no opening act. Although Eric usually introduces great opening acts from the area, such as Dave Beegle, this time it was only Eric, Chris Maresh and a new drummer .....I believe his name is Wayne. Eric played some new material, one of the songs did not yet have a title, some from his newest album "Up Close" and a few of his old favorites. It was a nice blend. As always Eric got into his zone about half way thru the show and that is my favorite part. He mesmerizes us with his long rendition of "When the Sun Meets the Sky", it lasted a musical (Eric) shred of about 10 minutes then on to "Ah Via Musicom" and of course from there "Cliffs of Dover". What can you say about Eric? Always great, love to see him play and he was talkative and funny. A nice crowd of people too. If you haven't seen an Eric Johnson concert your life is not complete. : )

    eric Johnson, Bluebird

by nicknameneal on 7/24/11Bluebird Theater - Denver

eric is a great musician, one of the foremost guitarists in the country, no doubt, but his song selection was weird and not to my liking, very disappointing. a lot of eric's interior monologue with himself, with virtuoso jamming but not much fun to listen to.' just a lot of songs which were hyper fast and hard to listen to; combine it with the Bluebirds truly lame sound system and it equated to a very disappojnting night. combine it with the uninformed yahoos who yell and scream at the wrong time. I own every Album Eric has ever released, and the show in concept had the potential to be great but was so far from it. it was a like a a warmup for new bandmates and they tried to see if everybody could go full speed.

Eric's still got it... the Bluebird doesn't

    by Fingers247 on 7/24/11Bluebird Theater - Denver

Eric still plays with passion and drive. The concert was marred by horrible sound. The Bluebird sound engineer decided the night should be mostly kick-drum and bass solo so you couldn't really hear Eric the first 3/4 of the concert, except the acoustic set, Boomy subwoofer bass for both sets. Chris Maresh looked like he was playing more than a few bass notes but only a few boomy drone tones could be heard coming out of the P.A. By the time Cliffs of Dover rolled around, the sound 'engineer' boosted up the guitar enough that you could actually hear it but whatever Chris played was lost to the Bluebird's chamber of horrors. What is with these sound engineers? Guitar town was the same way last year... you couldn't hear a thing Sonny Landreth was playing for the same reason - bad, bad mixing and EQ. Sound engineers should have to pass hearing tests because these guys have no low end left and are determined to take the rest of with them.

    eric johnson ruined it

by bigs0307 on 10/12/10Uptown Theater - Kansas City

Both Peppino and Andy McKee were entertaining to watch, full of energy and truly enjoying themselves. Eric, however, spent half the time plucking out notes on the piano and singing some cringeworthy lyrics to some sappy songs. I took my boyfriend to this show, thinking he'd get to see Eric at his best. Guess I was wrong. It put a damper on the whole night.

4th time I've seen EJ, but 1st time I've ever seen him do all acoustic and play piano. D'Agostino & McKee are also amazing, I would never have know about them otherwise, even though McKee is from Topeka, which is just 50 miles away. I'll be buying some of their material. Looking forward to EJ's new CD.

Guitar Masters not as good as expected

by MultiClowesHallpatron on 10/5/10Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

This concert was a disappointment after all the hype in the promotions and the program handed out at Clowes Hall. Of course all three artists are expert guitarists and played very well, but it was specifically promoted as a program that would focus on accoustic guitar and technique, so it was a surprise, not always in a good way, when vocal and piano pieces were included in the playlist. The program could easily have been structured to allow an intermission but wasn't. It was obvious at the end of Eric Johnson's performance that they planned all along for the three to perform several pieces together, but after only one piece they walked off the stage as if they would just forget that plan unless the audience applauded and yelled loud enough for an encore. D'Agostino was by far the best and most engaging performer.

    Outstanding Guitar Masters

by ElderXer on 10/5/10Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

This was my first time seeing either of these artists live. This was also my 12 year old sons first concert ever and my 14 year olds 2nd concert. I am so happy I chose this show. It showed the different levels of performance that i want my boys to understand. My youngest stood and applauded after nearly every composition. My oldest isn't very vocal and yelled out several times in appreciation of the work of the 3 men on stage. I myself was amazed and in awe of the abilities of what I was witnessing and would pay again and again to see them. An excellent show in a perfect setting with a personal feel.

    Guitar Masters how true

by IndyMann on 10/4/10Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

WOW, I was very impressed with all the performers. All 3 masters have a completely different style of playing. The only drawback I saw was the performance could have been a little longer. It was only 1 1/2 hrs of playing. All the music was fantastic and I would recommend the event to any one who is passionate about guitars. It was also nice of all 3 performers to have a meet and greet after the show. They were all friendly and gracious there were so many fans. Thanks, Indy Man

    What a night....!

by Jade7438 on 10/4/10Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

I was enamored by the whole thing...Peppino and Eric's playing was phenomenal. It was Andy that I went to see though. I was in heaven listening to him live. I will definitely go see him again!! I wish I had known it was more about Eric than Andy. Now I can't wait to see Andy by himself.

    Amazing

by pnh2001 on 10/4/10Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

Eric Johnson was a known quantitiy of excellence - used to catch him at local clubs in Austin many years ago. Enjoyed Andy McKee - the true delight was Peppino D'Agostino. The emotional content of his playing engrossed the audience to the point you could hear everyone breathing....... I feel like I finally experienced the core of the Italian sould that produced classical works of art.

D'Agostino and Mckee are Amazing But Johnson wasnt

by MastaDidg on 10/4/10Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

Excellent show! Peppino D'Agostino and Andy Mckee were amazing; however Eric Johnson played a lot of cheesy ballads (think cheap "american cheese product"), and really only one very good guitar instrumental. The first two guys make the show very worth it though.
