About

Austin, Texas...Eric Johnson has been traveling on a prolific odyssey over the course of more than four decades. Along the way, his creations have encompassed repertoire that cross pollinate genres which include rock, blues, jazz, fusion, soul, folk, new-age, classical and even country. Inevitably, E.J. says it best in sharing, "It really boils down to the music and the song at the end of the day", he explains, "If it doesn't have that it gets boring for me. The most important thing for me is to grow musically and make a more expansive and meaningful artistic statement with every new project".

During the pandemic, the Grammy-winning guitarist, vocalist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist released weekly donation-based "Mini Guitar Lessons" benefiting Food Banks across the country and worked in the studio on previously un-released tracks and new recordings. These tracks resulted in the release of 2 new albums entitled "The Book Of Making" and "Yesterday Meets Today" in July of 2022 on Blue Élan Records. The purchase of both albums includes the keys to a third album, "Takeouts" which includes unreleased and alternate recordings of songs available as an exclusive download.

Throughout his career, Johnson has approached music as a healing force, a way to enhance the listener's consciousness, and conjure joy and inspiration. More than a year into the Pandemic , and because of the Pandemic, he reflects that this approach has become reinforced and more enhanced.

The 2023 Treasure Tour will feature some of his previously unreleased gems, some older classics and some new soon-to-be favorites.

    The full Eric Johnson repertoire

by Mark T on 9/17/23Jefferson Theater - Charlottesville

Enjoyed the evening with EJ at the Jefferson in Charlottesville. Perfect 750 seat venue for a feeling of intimacy and connection — not a bad seat in the theater. (OK, the folding chairs were apparently acquired from Munchkin Land and can barely accommodate an adult posterior, but aside from that it’s a fabulous venue.) The two sets — acoustic and electric — were nicely constructed and covered everything we wanted to hear. Loved the walk down Chet Atkins Lane with the acoustic numbers, where one can imagine Chet and his vintage Gretsch on stage, faithfully offered by Johnson without overplaying or reinterpreting the original style. The Texas and Nashville years came through beautifully. After the break another hour building to “Desert Rose” and “Cliffs of Dover” with classic EJ riffs flowing effortlessly, enhanced by his pursuit of perfect tone and subtle delay effects. Exactly what we expected and were very pleased to see live. (Yes, he’s that fast and clean.) It would remiss not to mention his band who are excellent, especially the second guitar who complements Johnson and has some impressive skills of his own when taking over the leads during the piano numbers. Great concert; highly recommend for EJ fans and folks who admire consummate fret work.

    The master is even better

    by H2K on 9/17/23Jefferson Theater - Charlottesville

Fantastic show. The venue (The Jefferson) was great - good acoustics. Eric started the show with an acoustic set....then went to the piano. Very enjoyable. The volume was great and the on-stage talent was fantastic. Roscoe Beck is an amazing bassist. Second set was electric and they played a lot of EJ favorites. Volume was much louder and I used ear plugs...as I would advise all to do. I will go see him again when in the area.

Consumate Artist Leaves it Out on the Stage

by Woz on 9/16/23Jefferson Theater - Charlottesville

Eric Johnson and his band played their hearts out in Charlottesville, VA, on Weds., Sept. 13, 2023. Johnson showed why he is one of the most respected guitarists out there. His arpeggios were phenomenal. His band matched his skills. The band allowed Johnson to stand out, and he gave each plenty of room to do the same. The effect was a synergy especially beautiful in their 20-minute encore. Perhaps the highlight of the electric set, each musician had space. The effect was one of the most tasty encores I've ever heard: four separate pieces weaving together. In the end, Johnson and his mates were drenched in sweat, leaving it all on stage. Unfortunately, the mix was not the best. Johnson's somewhat delicate voice was overpowered by the band most of the time. The acoustic set pulled the bass out far too much, causing the acoustic guitar to be too high. What should have been a much quieter set ended up causing the delicate nature of Johnson's songs to get lost. All in all, the audience was in tune the whole night in the intimate Jefferson Theater, and the band seemed aware of it. In fine form, all.

    Awesome Show!

Mindblowing presentation by Eric Johnson and his band.

by Steve on 9/16/23Jefferson Theater - Charlottesville

The Jefferson Theater was a perfect venue for Eric Johnson and his band to show their stuff. They are all consummate artists, but Johnson's performance was particularly other-worldly. His style, versatility, breadth of play (acoustic to electric), speed and lyricism were jaw-dropping. This was, hands down, the BEST rock concert I've ever attended.

    Fantastic as always

by nicegirl on 9/14/23Mercury Ballroom - Louisville

Loved the two part show: Part 1 was Eric and the bass player doing a set as an acoustic duo. Then there was a break and Part 2 was the entire band including a 2nd guitar player who also played keyboards and a drummer. Eric and the other guitar player switched off on who played keys and who played guitar. They played the tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughn "S.R.V"that I'd not heard live in a while. There was also a tribute to Jeff Beck which was great as well. The whole show was energetic and really fun!

Best show I’ve ever been to

by Steven on 9/14/23Mercury Ballroom - Louisville

This is the second time I have seen Eric. He somehow topped the last time I saw him. He is playing as good if not better than in the 80s and 90s. Also, Roscoe Beck on bass was a great decision. He blew my mind all night. Go see Eric in this tour. The set list is great, the band sounds great, and Eric is as great as ever.

    Not to be missed!

by Thornton on 9/13/23Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts (fka Duke Energy) - Raleigh

There are guitar players, then there are guitar MASTERS! Eric Johnson falls into the latter category. Just watching is hands is mesmerizing. The two set show lasted well over two hours, with a short, 15 minute intermission. The first set, an acoustic one, consisted of Eric playing with his long-time bassist Roscoe Beck. The two have an innate sense of where the music is going, and play off of each other with a polished style that is rarely seen these days. Set two was electric, and the addition of an additional guitarist/keyboardist and drummer turned up the energy level exponentially. Both of these additional supporting musicians were exceptionally gifted at their craft, and both Eric ad Roscoe fed off of their presence and played with the excitement of musicians in their mid 20's. The evening closed with Eric playing an 8 minute solo introduction to "Zap"and then turning that into a 20 minute jam, where each musician showed their incredible chops. The performance left me speechless! Easily one of the best shows I have ever witnessed! The Fletcher Opera Theater in Raleigh has an intimate feel. There are literally no bad seats in the venue, and the sound was as good as any I have heard anywhere. Every single aspect of each instrument was easily discernable in the mix and the volume level was appropriately loud, without being excessively so. Great soundboard operator!

    Amazing show, great venue

by LikeWise on 9/13/23Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts (fka Duke Energy) - Raleigh

Eric put on a clinic of musicianship, but I was really impressed most by his songwriting and composition skills. Each piece was moving and inspiring. Venue was wonderful with great friendly staff.

    Incredible concert!

by Rich D on 9/13/23Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts (fka Duke Energy) - Raleigh

Eric Johnson is a truly amazing guitarist and this performance really captured his incredible talent. I've attended several of his shows over the years and this one was the best. And his group, Roscoe Beck on bass and the drummer and other guitarist (whose names I don't recall) were also superb. The venue for the concert( Fletcher) in Raleigh was perfect - great size (600) and acoustics, and beautiful.

    Eric Johnson is a treasure!

by Jim on 9/13/23Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts (fka Duke Energy) - Raleigh

Eric Johnson is a virtuoso with the guitar and his bandmates are equally talented. The set with encore lasted nearly 2.5 hours and was well worth the price of admission. The smaller venue at Duke Performing Arts was perfect for sound and enjoyment.

by Robert on 9/12/23Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts (fka Duke Energy) - Raleigh

Eric Johnson and the whole band are some of the most accomplished musicians I have ever seen in my lifetime. The venue was amazing!! There were no bad seats in the auditorium. I definitely want to go back to Raleigh and attend another event there.

    Worth the wait!

by Drummasauris on 9/12/23Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts (fka Duke Energy) - Raleigh

This show was originally scheduled for mid March, 2020. Something happened - can't quite remember what 🤔 - and it got rescheduled to that same August, then the following September, and finally 2 years later. Tonite! So worth the wait! Small theater, only seating 600. Very intimate. I wondered if mics were even necessary 😆. At almost 70, Eric is every bit the virtuoso he was when I first heard Ah Via Musicom over 30 years ago! A little more weathered looking - not the fair skinned pretty boy in the marching band outfit - but the tone and precision is unchanged. Maybe better! He's surrounded himself with some incredible talent (as if). Check out some of the solos from the bass and drums! Unbelievable! I was only able to grab some rather short snippets as the staff was tapping on shoulders about recording video (pix were ok). I did record the finale of Cliffs of Dover - complete with like an 8 minute guitar solo intro - but FB apparently doesn't like 15+ minute videos uploaded 🙄. I'll see if I can trim it or get it up another way, cuz it's definitely worth the watch! (EDIT - I linked it in the comments below. Go see it there!) You da man, Mr. Johnson! Thanks for keeping Raleigh on your schedule!

Not enough words to describe the intensity of joy, the evening brought. Erika Johnston and his band are quintessential artists. The venue was absolutely perfect. Could not have imagined a better evening.

    Great evening

by EJ Fan on 9/12/23Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts (fka Duke Energy) - Raleigh

Waited 2 years for this concert to get rescheduled, and EJ did not disappoint! Almost 3 hour show, first set acoustic and piano, very cool stuff. Second set classic EJ with some old stuff, some new stuff, great improv (including an almost 10 minute prelude to Cliffs of Dover). Eric seemed very appreciative of this audience, and even said he was glad to be back touring again. Really enjoyed the night! Looking forward to what’s next for Eric!

    Fantastic music. Sound…not so much.

by Kevin on 9/12/23Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts (fka Duke Energy) - Raleigh

When you get a free parking spot in front of the venue, you know it’s going to be a good night. I had a second row seat on the far right. It was the last seat in the aisle. I bought it maybe three years ago and wasn’t complaining about that. Great view. I moved to the first row as they were unoccupied. I had been sitting next to two chatty guys, one of which couldn’t shut off his phone’s text alert prior to the concert. So I got some room and have them room. From my seats, the sound mix was pretty bad. I must have been too close and don’t know if that’s normal. Everything on the far side of the stage, including vocals, guitar and piano, were hard to hear. Drum and bass in the middle was fine. Guitar and keys on the right, close to me, were too loud. First world problems, I know. Was hoping for better. So happy I went.

Excellent concert, a work of art

by Ricardito on 9/12/23Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts (fka Duke Energy) - Raleigh

Eric Johnson is an amazing artist. He doesn't put on a show or carry on a lot of dialogue; he just plays. It was a really good experience and he played a long time from 8:00 - 10:40 pm with one 15 minute intermission. He played all the popular songs and a lot of other work. He gave it his all and I really can't think of anything else I could ask form him. He had a band with three members who were all really good and complimented his guitar playing. A great experience if you are an Eric Johnson and/or guitar fan.

Waited 3 years for this show worth every minute

by Obligate Omnivore on 9/12/23Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts (fka Duke Energy) - Raleigh

I had tickets to the original 2020 date that was postponed, then cancelled then rescheduled, the postponed and finally — three years later — happened. I’d seen Eric Johnson with Mike Stern, but this was my first time seeing him as the headliner — no opening act, just 2 hours or so of EJ and Friends in a venue intimate enough that you don’t need a Jumbotron to see the stage. I was a little afraid the sound would be too big for the auditorium, which was designed and built to house opera. I’d seen other shows there before but those were all folk/acoustic bands. I needn’t have worried. The auditorium was more than capable of holding all that sound and the crew on the board did a superb job. The show itself was just like I like ‘em. More music, less talk in between. And during the encore when the bass player was trading fours with the drummer and slipped in a Spinal Tap fill… well, you just don’t hear that every day. And I have to give a shout out to the staff at Fletcher. In my haste to get inside, I left my wallet sitting on the table at the security check in. By the time I realized it was missing, they’d already figured out whose wallet it was and where I was sitting. What could have been a disaster was only a momentary panic. Overall this was exactly what I needed at this juncture. It was well worth the wait!

Loved the mix of acoustic and electric. Eric and Roscoe create an amazing show. Such a joy to hear real music, performed by talented artists. When can you come back?? 🎸🥰
