Earth, Wind & Fire in Concert

The word gets thrown around far too frequently these days, but in the case of Earth, Wind & Fire it genuinely applies: This band is legendary. From the mystical elements of their name to their profound and lasting influence on contemporary pop music to their litany of hits spanning the latter decades of the 20th century, EWF have achieved status beyond the merely mortal. Even with the passing of founder and lead vocalist Maurice White in 2016 the group live on, bringing their uplifting, body-moving blend of R&B, funk, disco, pop, and jazz to several generations of fans.

Their latest tour begins when EWF headline opening day of New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Fest in a massive party for the iconic festival's 50th anniversary. From there, EWF travel across the U.S. and Canada, performing at amphitheaters and arenas from coast to coast and wrapping up with a pair of shows at the scenic Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery outside Seattle.

The crew is 11 members strong and includes original members Philip Bailey on vocals and percussion, Verdine White on bass and vocals, and Ralph Johnson on drums and vocals, plus a three-piece horn section and a host of young, talented players. Their stage show remains potent, featuring sophisticated group choreography, stunning instrumental interplay, and eye-popping visuals. You very well might not sit down.

Earth Wind & Fire Background

The Earth, Wind & Fire story begins with Maurice White. As a kid growing up in Memphis in the 1950s, White went to school with a young Booker T. Jones, and the two began performing their first tunes together. White moved to Chicago for college and fell in with an Afrocentric artistic crowd, playing as a session drummer for Chess Records and performing at the South Side's Afro-Arts Theater with a funk group called The Pharaohs.

His musical ambitions took him to Los Angeles, where he put together a band that included his brother Verdine on bass plus a few more Chicago transplants as well as local phenoms. Earth, Wind & Fire began releasing acclaimed albums from the start, but it wasn't until the mid-'70s that they charted their first hits, No. 1s like "Shining Star," "Getaway," and "September."

Over the years, they've won four Grammys out of 12 nominations, including a 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award, and the band's lineup has changed but their sound has never wavered. After five decades of soulful music, Earth, Wind & Fire's message of peace, unity, and celebration is now more necessary than ever.

Earth, Wind & Fire on Tour

Grammy Award-winning, legendary artists Carlos Santana and Earth, Wind & Fire embark on a North American tour. A continuation of 2019's Supernatural Now tour for Santana, the Miraculous Supernatural 2020 Tour marks the first time these two powerhouses share the stage in the U.S. The Live Nation-produced outing kicks off June 19th in San Diego and makes stops in Los Angeles, Dallas, New York, Chicago, Toronto, and more before wrapping August 29th in Tampa.

Earth, Wind & Fire is one of music's most celebrated musical forces in history with an iconic music catalogue that has been the soundtrack of millions of lives around the world. They were the first African American R&B group to receive the prestigious Kennedy Center Honor in 2019. Philip Bailey, Verdine White and Ralph Johnson continue the legacy of the band with career achievements that include nine Grammys, one being a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. EWF's music catalogue of singles and albums have tallied hundreds of millions of streams and sales worldwide and forever changed the history of music.

What do you get when you combine C.T.A. w/ E.W.&F?

by Bonecode on 7/14/09Time Warner Cable Arena - Charlotte

The answer is a party of epic proportion! Chicago / Earth, Wind, and Fire brought the house down in Charlotte. This is the third time they have toured together and the first time they played in Charlotte's Time Warner Arena (where the Bobcats play). This was a great show and both bands were definitely "on" for the performance. Each band has a tremendous library of hits to draw from and you got to hear many of them. However, the party kicked into high gear when these super-groups joined forces and jammed together. I would only suggest going to this concert under the following conditions: 1) If you want to party and 2) If you're breathing!!! Best concert I've been to in years.

by Divameka on 7/14/09Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park - Alpharetta

I may be a little younger than most that went to the concert but that has got to have been the most wonderful and memorable concert I have been to! If you haven't see these two groups live in action....you're missing out on life!

    LOVING IT!!!!

by rebreit on 7/14/09Time Warner Cable Arena - Charlotte

We enjoyed ourselves so much! It was great to see people enjoying themselves without reservation. The songs will never die! We got to relive a part of our youth with others who truly appreciated it. The bands were ageless and priceless. Everytime I hear one of their songs I'm instantly back to the concert.

    Blast to the Past

by Shernels on 7/14/09Time Warner Cable Arena - Charlotte

It was so great to be able to see and hear legends like Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire! These guys know how to rock the house. I was able to come to the front near the stage for the latter 1/3 of the concert. What a show! Highly recommended!!!

    Them Brothers Still Got It

by CandBG on 7/14/09Amphitheater at The Wharf - Orange Beach

I didn't expect performers as well seasoned as they are to have that much energy. I don't know where they get it but I'd like to know. The older guys, the younger guys, they all put it together for one hell of a show. And the wharf couldn't have been a prettier and more personal venue, you can't get a bad seat.

EWF & Chicago still Rock the House

by Seven7 on 7/14/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

Earth Wind & Fire is simply amazing. Not only do they sing all of their hits, and sound as good as the originals if not better. They display unbridled energy and enthusiasm throughout each song. Every band member is constantly moving and dancing. Amazing enough is the brass section which dances while playing impeccably, but bass player Verdine White is a pure dynamo of energy. Philip Bailey is wonderful and continues to delight fans with his beautiful voice and ear shattering falsettos. Chicago is very entertaining and rewards their fans with a medley of their numerous hits. It is great fun to watch these two incredible bands play together. You can see how much they truly respect each other and enjoy playing together. It is an absolute treat to see these two legendary bands play together in concert. You don't want to miss this.

    Why ruin Chicago with EWF?

    by 1978Aggie on 7/14/09Woodlands Pavilion - Woodlands

Chicago was great. EWF alone would have been OK. But, to put EWF with Chicago destroyed the impact of Chicago's music.

Earth, Wind and Fire & Chicago phenominal!

by Rowena2267 on 7/14/09Amphitheater at The Wharf - Orange Beach

This was the best concert! I could have listened all night. The muscians, the songs, the sets, the lights, the colors, it was all fantastic. Its difficult to go to other concerts because my expectations are so high. I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed the dancing and interaction with the audience.

EWF & CHI - together again

by theeviltwin on 7/14/09Time Warner Cable Arena - Charlotte

First time attending a concert at the Time Warner arena. Must say I am very impressed at the facilitiy - one of the better venues I have been to as of late. Def beats the typical ampitheater schlock. Parking was fine - ample & affordable for a large downtown area. Noticed venue was very close to mass transit - which is a plus if you live in the area. Close to the interstate - signage could be a bit better but GPS solves that. Entrance to the facility was quick & easy. Signage for floor seating was lacking, but attendants were quick to point us in the proper direction. LOVED the small areas that you could get a drink without leaving the concert area - very nice touch. Amenities such as these were def thought of when the venue was being built. Floor seating was a bit meh - we were in the front of the second section of seats, a little over 1/2 way back on the floor. Many venues w/ temp floor seating will have sloped risers for the chairs - but none here so it was a little hard to see. I am 5'7" and had a bit of a hard time seeing - I felt really bad for the 5' nothing lady beside me - she had to resort to standing on a chair! Also - she was getting squished by a very large lady next to her who was literally taking up 1/2 of this lady's seat- seriously ppl, you know these seats aren't barcaloungers - if you are on the hefty side - buy an extra seat or sit on the end of the row! ON TO THE SHOW - have seen Chicago many, many, times, and have seen them w/ EWF each year they have toured together. Sound was pretty good - not the best, but not the worst. Loved that the bands opened together for a few songs - EWF does a great job getting the crowd going for the night. Not a huge EWF fan but LOVE Phillip Bailey and I could listen to him sing the phone book. A true talent! The Chicago set, well, was basically the same friggin set that has been played for the last oh, 10 years or so. They swap out a couple of songs from year to year, but no surprises. At least they didn't play the whole Ballad this time. I simply do not understand why a band that tours EVERY year would not mix it up a bit more and throw a couple of deep cuts for the die-hard fans. Seeing as we are the ones keeping them in business every year! Combined end set w/ both bands was great - again - EWF really brings the voltage and gives CHI a run for their money.

    EW&F + Chicago - Awesome !!!

by Kamou on 7/14/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

I grew up listening to both bands from the time of their first hits and this was my first live concert with each band. No words can describe what it meant to finally see EW&F. They remain a cultural phenom that is spiritual, historical, futuristic, emotional and funky all at the same time. Their positive lyrics raise the bar above 90% of what masquerades as music on pop and r&b radio today. Adding the big horn sound of Chicago to the same stage only added to the experience. This is another band with a message for thinking people (Dialogue!!!) that takes me back to the 60's and 70's movement music. From what I could tell, I was one of few who knew the words to most of the songs by both bands!!

    Both bands were awesome!!!

by UfcFan on 7/14/09Amphitheater at The Wharf - Orange Beach

Both of these bands have been playing since the 60s which is a little before my time, but I remember my parents listening to them on a reel to reel player growing up. Gotta admit....these guys rock for their age. When both bands played together, it was amazing. This is the first concert I went to where everyone in the audience was standing up and dancing. If you get a chance to go, I would definitely recommend it. Well worth the money.

    EWF/Chicago Still Rock the House!

by MarshallHand on 7/14/09Merriweather Post Pavilion - Columbia

The Earth Wind and Fire/Chicago concert was better this time than when I saw them in Virginia a few years ago. The concert at Merriweather appeared to be more organized. They have been practicing. The bands easily play each others songs. With more singers, guitars, horns and drums, it is just impressive. The bands are really onto something. I don't believe Merriweather was a sellout, but you couldn't tell. I brought two of my sons with me this year. This concert was at such a high level, that even my cynical 22 year old called it amazing.

Earth, Wind and Fire & Chicago

by 1Bigdaddy on 7/14/09Amphitheater at The Wharf - Orange Beach

Earth, Wind and Fire carried the show. While Chicago's Music was tight, Chicago is in desperate need of a singer. Earth, Wind and Fire made it an unforgettable show.

    Chicago with EWF was great!

by CaliforniaNole on 7/14/09Amphitheater at The Wharf - Orange Beach

One of the better concerts I've seen in a long time. Both bands, 8 members of Chicago and 11 members of EWf opened the show TOGETHER playing Beginnings. They then proceeded to play an EWF song then another by Chicago. Chicago then left the stage and EWF played an hour set before a break then Chicago came back for an hour set playing most all of their hits. Each band also played a couple of songs by the other and the encore brought both bands back together for a four song, two each grand finale finishing with a jammin version of Free.

    A slice of Americana

by Bassman1971 on 7/14/09Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park - Alpharetta

What a truly enjoyable way to spend our 32nd wedding anniversary. Great entertainers, great music, great memories! My wife and I regressed a good thirty years and had a wonderful time. I was a musician in college back when both of these groups really started to make it big and their music is just as awesome now as it was then.

    Fantastic chaos on stage.

by 8675309 on 7/14/09Time Warner Cable Arena - Charlotte

It was awesome to see the intermingling of the two bands in what appeared to be organized chaos. 3 hours of singing along to fantastic songs, and dancing uncontrollably to hyptnotizing rhythms.
