Earth, Wind & Fire in Concert

The word gets thrown around far too frequently these days, but in the case of Earth, Wind & Fire it genuinely applies: This band is legendary. From the mystical elements of their name to their profound and lasting influence on contemporary pop music to their litany of hits spanning the latter decades of the 20th century, EWF have achieved status beyond the merely mortal. Even with the passing of founder and lead vocalist Maurice White in 2016 the group live on, bringing their uplifting, body-moving blend of R&B, funk, disco, pop, and jazz to several generations of fans.

Their latest tour begins when EWF headline opening day of New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Fest in a massive party for the iconic festival's 50th anniversary. From there, EWF travel across the U.S. and Canada, performing at amphitheaters and arenas from coast to coast and wrapping up with a pair of shows at the scenic Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery outside Seattle.

The crew is 11 members strong and includes original members Philip Bailey on vocals and percussion, Verdine White on bass and vocals, and Ralph Johnson on drums and vocals, plus a three-piece horn section and a host of young, talented players. Their stage show remains potent, featuring sophisticated group choreography, stunning instrumental interplay, and eye-popping visuals. You very well might not sit down.

Earth Wind & Fire Background

The Earth, Wind & Fire story begins with Maurice White. As a kid growing up in Memphis in the 1950s, White went to school with a young Booker T. Jones, and the two began performing their first tunes together. White moved to Chicago for college and fell in with an Afrocentric artistic crowd, playing as a session drummer for Chess Records and performing at the South Side's Afro-Arts Theater with a funk group called The Pharaohs.

His musical ambitions took him to Los Angeles, where he put together a band that included his brother Verdine on bass plus a few more Chicago transplants as well as local phenoms. Earth, Wind & Fire began releasing acclaimed albums from the start, but it wasn't until the mid-'70s that they charted their first hits, No. 1s like "Shining Star," "Getaway," and "September."

Over the years, they've won four Grammys out of 12 nominations, including a 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award, and the band's lineup has changed but their sound has never wavered. After five decades of soulful music, Earth, Wind & Fire's message of peace, unity, and celebration is now more necessary than ever.

Earth, Wind & Fire on Tour

Grammy Award-winning, legendary artists Carlos Santana and Earth, Wind & Fire embark on a North American tour. A continuation of 2019's Supernatural Now tour for Santana, the Miraculous Supernatural 2020 Tour marks the first time these two powerhouses share the stage in the U.S. The Live Nation-produced outing kicks off June 19th in San Diego and makes stops in Los Angeles, Dallas, New York, Chicago, Toronto, and more before wrapping August 29th in Tampa.

Earth, Wind & Fire is one of music's most celebrated musical forces in history with an iconic music catalogue that has been the soundtrack of millions of lives around the world. They were the first African American R&B group to receive the prestigious Kennedy Center Honor in 2019. Philip Bailey, Verdine White and Ralph Johnson continue the legacy of the band with career achievements that include nine Grammys, one being a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. EWF's music catalogue of singles and albums have tallied hundreds of millions of streams and sales worldwide and forever changed the history of music.

As always the two together were amazing!! I LOVE watching them perform both seperately and together! We have gone to see them every time they have been in Indianapolis and it just keeps getting better and better!! There is so much energy from both bands how can you NOT get up and move your body???!!!! Everyone should go see them at least once!

  • EWF & Chicage

by gotsu on 7/22/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San JoseRating: 2 out of 5

Well, just seems like a group of people needing to get money and just pooled a few people together. The originals are pretty much gone and Chicago will never sound like Chicago without Peter Cetera. Someone tried hard to mimic the Chicage vocals...nice try. HP Pavilon is not a good venue to hold concerts. The structure and echoing of the acostic made the entire place sound like noise. Except the bangs from EWF that might create booms for the loud noise effect. Chicago sounded really bad, I have to say. Last time Santana visited with guitar and instruments were okay. DON'T DO VOCAL! A little disappointed. But again, this is not a symphony hall built for music. But I will never go back to HPP for concert, especially with anyone singing. This ruins the Chicago and this might as well be their last live event.

  • Energetic!

by Lily1 on 7/22/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

In the beginning of the concert, the sound system was overwhelming the voices of the artists. You couldn't hear the lyrics, and heard mostly the base. That was dissapointing. We moved to the upper leverl/mid-section and it wasn't towards almost after the intermission and when the concert was almost over is when the sound system and the artists were heard the way it should be. In other words, the sound system was one of the worst I've heard. But, we had a great time and what I loved the most was that I saw different generations enjoying, dancing and singing along! We love Earth, Wind and Fire and Chicago! All in all, both were awesome and we did enjoy it. I loved the fact that after so many years, both bands still deliver their individual talents, which is why in spite of our budget, it was well worth the money we invested in forgetting our problems for a while and enjoy the music we love, live. Thank you, guys!

  • good players, bad sound!!!

by simone36 on 7/22/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San JoseRating: 1 out of 5

I was VERY disappointed in the show. The sound system crew should be fired. When the show started we couldn't even recognize the song because the sound was so loud and unclear. We quickly moved toward the back of the arena where it was a little better, but overall still bad. As we sat in the back we watched a steady stream of people also relocating their seats away from the stage. It was very sad to see two classic bands who were obviously playing, singing, and moving their hearts out only to sound awful. Also, there was no big screen to watch them up close. Overall,. very disappointing.

  • Memorable evening!

by Airkatt on 7/22/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

Great concert! I had my doubts at the begining.....Earth,Wind & Fire and Chicago? Well, they put an incredible show. Full of energy, especially at the end when both groups performed together. They totally complemented each other. Loved it!

  • Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire still have it

by Daddiod on 7/22/09Fiddler's Green Amphitheatre - EnglewoodRating: 5 out of 5

All smiles at this one. Music you love. Great crowds. Two horn lines. Sometimes one big horn line. Don't arrive late. The two groups open and close the show together.

  • Earth, WInd & Fire & Chicago were magical!

by msfit on 7/22/09WaMu Theater - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

earth, wind and fire & Chicago were amazing. Their sound and energy were outstanding. The audience looked like and AARP convention, yet everyone was dancing in their seats. It was by far, the best concert I have ever attended. Time and space stood still. What a magical evening and extraordinary experience.

  • Earth Wind and Fire plus Chicago

by wickedone on 7/22/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

Together they were great, as two separate acts EW & F were exceptional, Chicago was good except for their guitar playing singer who I thought was poor at best.

  • ewf & chicago

I had a blast of course ! Good to see the originals , Phillip Bailey , Verdine White & Ralph Johnson and of course Chicago , they're awesome !! They're all the same ! It's like listening to CD when they perform . Love to see them again .......

  • Gotta See It

by READAgpaoa on 7/22/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

For best sound quality move to the front, not the side, as inside the HP Pavillion it was terrible accoustics at the side seats. The front facing sound was incredible. The entire group was a joy to watch and hear. Constant movement, high energy and enthusiasum from the stage. A GREAT show. The Horns were right on, the Singers were strong and true and the drums drove the show.

  • Reminiscing Moments with EWF/Chicago

by Fan80 on 7/22/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

Good Performance overall because all of the classics hits were played, as the audience expected. Great reminiscing as the audience mostly likely grew up with this music with the brass horn sounds of the 70s and 80s. I mainly went to see EWF with Phil Bailey singing lead, of course, dissapointed with Chicago since Pete Cetera not there as the voice of Chicago, but they did the best they could to re-create the best of hits. EWF really picked it up with Let's Groove Tonight! I think EWF and their energy carried Chicago through, but overall not bad for this aging singing group...they still have it playing their instruments, since their vocals were not their strengths. I think the bands goofed up a few times as the sound was off, but HP Pavilion, is not the greatest for sound, but to be expected for this huge hockey venue, the Shark Tank Arena. Another plus that evening, as a skating venue, Brian Boitano was sitting in the audience...but we couldn't find him...just great to know that he is one of our local Olympic heroes supporting our community.

  • Earth Wind and Fire w/ Chicago

by nettie478 on 7/22/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

When they played together they were phenomenal. Was surprised that EW& F went first. And I would recommend that they have Chicago go first, reason being that Chicago's music is more mellow and EW&F livens up the crowd. I noticed that people were leaving early when they thought Chicago was nearing the end. I'm please to say that we stayed and were happy that we did, the compulation between the two is fabulous. Thanks for the opportunity.

  • So many hits, such great sound and energy...

by KristiG on 7/22/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

We'd seen this tour before, a few years ago, so I thought I knew what to expect... but still, my excitement when both bands came out went through the roof! So many great musicians on one stage, and too many hits to mention

  • blastfromthepast

by kaygeenovelty on 7/22/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

I had no idea that E,W&F and Chicago would play some songs together - but I loved that! Although at times the sound quality reminded me of a badly tuned AM radio with the volume turned up too high, I still loved the show. My fifteen year old daughter plays trumpet in high school jazz band, and I wanted her to see how wide the range of "applications" for horns is. All of those tunes are woven into the fabric of our lives and I feel fortunate that I could see some of the original artists still belting them out!

  • Great concert!

by dimsumsushigirl on 7/22/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

One of the best concerts I have been to. Since we were sitting in the 11th row, we got to go up to the front of the stage and dance in front of the bands at the last half of the show. Earth, Wind and Fire put on a great show even though they have been around for 40 years, they always sound great. We weren't too crazy about the new lead singer for Chicago, but they still put on a pretty good show.

  • Outstanding performance!

by MSMARCO2009 on 7/22/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

I loved the mixture of Earth, Wind, & Fire & Chicago on-stage, particularly the final climactic finish of both band's top songs: September, and 25 or 6 to 4.

  • Great Show -- awesome energy!

by Floripan on 7/22/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

Went to see Earth, Wind & Fire and Chicago play together last night -- what a great show! Everyone was off their setas dancing. they sounded fantastic -- it brought back so many memories. After all these years, they still got it!

  • Earth Wind and Fire and Chicago So-So

by dannb on 7/22/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San JoseRating: 3 out of 5

Earth, Wind and Fire was incredible. Chicago was just okay. Without Peter Cetera's voice the songs are just missing something. Chicago was also loud drowning out the lyrics and theband doesn't have the stage prescence of EWF. Together they were awesome.

  • Earth, Wind & Fire Rocked

by kathydig on 7/22/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San JoseRating: 4 out of 5

I loved Earth Wind & Fire. Chicago was great too, but some songs sounded different, probably just because it wasn't the original singer on all the songs, but they were still good.

  • very well done

by Betcha on 7/22/09HP Pavilion At San Jose - San JoseRating: 5 out of 5

the 2 groups still played very good, although the concert should start may half hour earlier.
