DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS IN CONCERT:

Southern rockers Drive-By Truckers have a penchant for tradition, recording their studio albums in analog and insisting on releasing their records on vinyl. The band's traditional approach extends to their beloved live concerts, where craft and musicianship take center stage and marathon sets are the norm. The Truckers may orbit just under the mainstream's radar, but their devoted followers wouldn't have it any other way — as one of the best-kept secrets in music, the band has fans eagerly awaiting their intimate 2014 tour dates in support of English Oceans, their tenth studio album.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1996, the Drive-By Truckers' path to success was slow but steady, aided by a grassroots online presence and their constant touring. Following the release of their first two albums Gangstabilly (1998) and Pizza Deliverance (1999), the band embarked on their first US tour, further added to their reputation as consummate performers with electrifying live sets. 2005's The Dirty South marked the band's first appearance on the Billboard 200, which the band has steadily climbed with each subsequent release. Following the release of their tenth studio album English Oceans in 2014, the band will hit the road for another rollicking tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Once again DBT do not disappoint. This is a band that puts out excellent albums, and a rare occurrence where they are even better live."

"I have seen DBT 30+ times and they always make me look around for the next show! I love their energy and how they play off each other! I have never been to a bad show and this one was no different."

"As always, DBT kept me smiling and singing. Hood and Cooley took turns telling us our favorite yarns, up close and personal."

  • No worries! DBT keeps you entertained!

    by WallieTheWalrus23 on 3/14/10Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Although I was upset that not much of the old material was played, they made it up by playing the new stuff, as well as keeping the audience enthusiastic with beer and happiness!

  • Astonishing

    by TruckerFan10000 on 3/14/10Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Hood and Cooley are the William Faulkner and Tennessee Williams of the New South, wandering its backwoods armed with stinging guitars and acerbic wit. I can't think of a better live band to see. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers may not want to follow when the Truckers open for them.

  • DBT, atlanta 3/12

by STPman on 3/13/10Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 3 out of 5

I'll start this by saying I have been following these guys for about 10 years now. The line-up has changed and the band has opted for that full sound by adding pedal steel and keyboards. While this is not my particular preference for live shows, I think it makes for great recording. That said, the live shows of the last couple years have taken a step back without the three guitar attack when Jason was in the band. Music was much heavier and rocking live. Last night Patterson took a very soft approach with his song selection and in all honestly there was really nothing impressive about the new stuff that was played. Cooley kept the thing rockin laying down where the devil don't stay, ghost to most, women without whiskey, zip city and love like this. I like when Shonna is limited to about two tunes as vocally she's not that strong, but last night she sang 4. It was just a really weird mix, Cooley was rockin when it was time to play and got the crowd going and Patterson drove it right in the ditch. Hard for me to say this, but of the 7 times I've seen them play, it was my least favorite show. They were pretty tight though.

  • DBT-Solid as always

by ATLHPT on 3/13/10Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

The show was good and the band played 3+ hours. The set list contained a lot of stuff off their new album. The venue is okay except for sound quality. The sound quality is much better at the Tabernacle where I saw their last show.

The sound was a little off tonight but the Truckers still rocked the house.

  • Overwhelmingly Underwhelming

    by JAFO1971 on 3/13/10Variety Playhouse - AtlantaRating: 1 out of 5

Having seen DBT for the first time at the Variety Playhouse, I was excited to see DBT's return. Disappointed, yes. Thank you for asking. The band played the sets as though they were waiting for their shift to end. Most of their stuff was new, which is cool, except that it wasn't all that impressive. They played a few older songs (Zip City, Sinkhole, etc), but I Ieft halfway through their draggy encore, so they may have woken up and played some more of their older stuff (Get Your Ass on the Plane, Hell No I Ain't Happy).

The DBTs delivered yet another stellar performance. Almost 3 hours of kicken out the jams.

  • As dirty as it gets

by TRforshort on 11/2/09House of Blues Dallas - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

These guys blew the roof off of the HOB. If you want dirty southern rock at its finest, check these guys out, they are not to be missed. Not only are they amazing at what they do, but you can tell that they are having the time of their lives doing it, which only enhances the experience for the audience.

They came out and played guitar, drums, etc. They also did some singing and such. People clapped after the songs were over. Maybe it was the beer but it was good.

  • Even Better LIVE!

by FrogTide on 10/29/09House of Blues Dallas - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

Just plane fun band with so much diversity and influence in thier music. Every song seems to tell a unique story. Ballads to jams were tight and professional all the while the band seemed to be having a blast doing what they do. The mix on Shonna's songs was a little light on the vocals but other than that production was ideal. Crowd was rowdy and as the show progressed, fed off of Pattersons energy -or was it visa-versa?? If you only have studio material of DBT you are only getting 2/3 of the greatness - you HAVE to go see them live! (The only bummer of the night was the food and service at the restaurant of HOB. It sucked pretty much top to bottom."Skippy" the 19 year old manager didn't help. Great venue for the music though)

  • DBT rocks the Big D!

Great concert - they are awesome in concert and entertaining to watch. Patterson is hot.

  • dbt was awesome

by southernrock91 on 8/30/09House of Blues Myrtle Beach - Myrtle BeachRating: 5 out of 5

best show I've been too. i went to hob the night be4 for franti/counting crows and the place was jammed packed and the music mediocre. Next night DBT was awesome. Their setlist touched on all their different works and they seemed like they were having as good a time as we were. Can't wait to see them again I damn near drove to Richmond for their next show.

  • Truckers leave it all onstage

by Woolie on 8/27/09The National - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

The band calls it the "rock show," and once again Drive-By Truckers left fans feeling as though they had just spent two hours themselves putting on a full-blown, high-energy rock concert. With most attendees singing along to every song, Saturday's show at The National in Richmond delivered all it had promised. Coming off back-to-back gigs in South Carolina and Georgia, Patterson Hood, Mike Cooley and gang showed no signs of being tired or worn-down. They hit the stage with a fury, after a much-inspired set by opening act Tift Merritt. Taking turns as usual, Hood and Cooley ripped through a setlist that included much of their recent album Brighter Than Creation's Dark, plus fan favorites from their extensive catalog. Merritt, showing an unexpected harder edge to her country-flavored setlist, joined the Truckers for a song midway throught the evening. Known for delivering one of the most exciting shows in rock and roll today, once again the Truckers left it all onstage.

  • Great Show. LOUD!

by PartyMarty on 8/26/09House of Blues Myrtle Beach - Myrtle BeachRating: 4 out of 5

This was my first DBT show. We were sure to get up front as I didn't want to miss anything. They were so loud you couldn't understand the lyrics unless you knew the songs they were playing. I love these guy's no matter what. A few of my friends commented on Patterson hocking luggies on the front of the stage saying it was nasty but I didn't care. I wish I hadn't gotten quite so drunk because I don't remember many details. It was just great seeing them live. They look just like they do on-line. I'll see them anytime they come back close and I can afford it. The House of Blues is Awesome AND the show was VERY affordable. BEWARE of the stairs when you leave. lol

  • Tift Merritt stole the show

by Lynbro on 8/25/09The National - RichmondRating: 3 out of 5

Not a big fan of Drive by Truckers. Lead singer very off key and music too loud to really understand words. Thought Tift Merritt was great. Never heard her before. Think we will be hearing lots more from this lady.

  • Drive By Truckers - you'll wish they'd stay!

by EastCoastTraveler on 8/24/09The National - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first time seeing Drive By Truckers and it was a fantastic concert. Not only did they play a good variety of their music, they also played a few new songs for the audience's critique. An excellent performance. This was my third time seeing a concert at The National Theatre in downtown Richmond. This converted orchestral music hall is a great venue for live music.

  • AWUSOMME SHOW

I went to the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach, SC, with my boyfriend to see the Drive By Truckers last Friday. We had such a great time, the venue was great and so was the band.

SIMPLY PUT, DBT IS THE BEST KEPT SECRET IN ROCK-N-ROLL TODAY.

  • Drive By Truckers: Another great Richmond show

by datbrad on 8/24/09The National - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

Drive By Truckers love Richmond, VA, and not only did Patterson Hood mention this from the stage, they showed as much with an almost 3 hour show covering both new material for their soon-to-be-released album, as well as old favorites. I remember towards the end of the second hour, turning to a friend of mine and telling him that I think we were seeing an epic show, and he nodded in agreement. People throw the word "epic" around a bit too generously these days, but in the case of the Drive By Truckers show in Richmond on August 22, 2009, EPIC was indeed the best single word that can be used to describe it. Also, having seen Tift Merritt a couple of times before, it was neat seeing her playing to the rowdy crowd at the National where she could rock out. Great seeing her sit in with DBT during their set also. Great night of music in Richmond for sure.
