About

The sandy shores of Asbury Park, New Jersey are hallowed ground in the northeast; the rolling waves have ushered generations of venerated musicians to worldwide acclaim. Dogs in a Pile, an eclectic quintet, has emerged as the heir apparent to the town’s rich musical legacy. Merging funk, jazz, and rock and roll with psychedelia, the quintet presents a completely original vibe built on kaleidoscopic soundscapes eerily reminiscent of the days of yesteryear.

The Dogs employ a unified approach to performance and songwriting, crafting aural mosaics through adept instrumentation and humble precocity. As avid storytellers, they draw inspiration from personal experiences, balancing life’s foibles with ever-present youthful sanguinity.

Dogs began when Philadelphia University of the Arts guitar gun-slinger Jimmy Law began playing with young Joe Babick (drums), a student at the Count Basie Theater program in Red Bank, NJ. Lightning struck when they were introduced to Berklee School of Music student and bass player Sam Lucid, who immediately suggested fellow Berklee student and keyboard player Jeremy Kaplan. The addition of fellow Berklee student Brian Murray (guitar) in 2019 made for the quintessential final piece in the Dogs’ puzzle.

A string of successful local shows drove the development of a massive northeast fan base, affectionately known as the Dog Pound. The band’s astronomical growth culminated in an epic, sold-out performance at the legendary Stone Pony in Asbury Park during the summer of 2021. Armed with a fresh batch of new material, Dogs in a Pile is taking its perpetually evolving testament to the Great American Songbook on tour in 2022, visiting plenty of new cities and spreading good music and good energy to good people along the way.

These guys really just know how to get the party going. The music they play just does something to your soul that makes you keep grooving. And the jams are so delectable that you don’t want them to end. This band is going big places and I’m happy to have seen them in the beginning. Because venues like The Stone Pony are going to be way too small to host the surplus of dogs wanting to be in that pile.

    Great show terrible venue

by Big red on 12/5/22The Foundry - Philadelphia

Dogs in a pipe was absolutely spectacular but the process to get into the venture was the most ridiculous I have ever experienced. First they asked that we remove everything from our pockets, not abnormal. Then proceeded to basically grope both the front and back of each patroon. When it was my turn and after I satisfied the typical procedure she security personnel then reached for my wallet and demanded that they look inside. After I refused to hand over my wallet they then requested that I take out all my cash so they can see inside the cash flap. When did the foundry start to hire TSA wannabe agents? Also I understand the want to keep everyone safe but this was just over the top. Also keep in mind this venue typically has 3 or more nitrous salespeople standing outside the venue after the show. I can’t imagine I’ll be back anytime soon.

    A hell of a time!

by Trunk Rum Pat on 8/9/22Sound Waves at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City - Atlantic City

No matter where you see them, the Dogs are constantly stepping up their live performances. They kept a massive crowd alert and entertained from 1am -3am! No matter the size of the crowd, the Dogs managed to make the show feel intimate. Their original tunes are fun and catchy without even trying, and you never know what you might hear at a Dogs show. You must see them and realize why they’re growing so fast, and I guarantee you will have a hell of a time!

Dogs in a pile will play on the summer stage at Stone Pony by summer 2023 or 2024. Mark my words. They are the best band from Asbury Park in the last 5-10 years.
