About

The sandy shores of Asbury Park, New Jersey are hallowed ground in the northeast; the rolling waves have ushered generations of venerated musicians to worldwide acclaim. Dogs in a Pile, an eclectic quintet, has emerged as the heir apparent to the town’s rich musical legacy. Merging funk, jazz, and rock and roll with psychedelia, the quintet presents a completely original vibe built on kaleidoscopic soundscapes eerily reminiscent of the days of yesteryear.

The Dogs employ a unified approach to performance and songwriting, crafting aural mosaics through adept instrumentation and humble precocity. As avid storytellers, they draw inspiration from personal experiences, balancing life’s foibles with ever-present youthful sanguinity.

Dogs began when Philadelphia University of the Arts guitar gun-slinger Jimmy Law began playing with young Joe Babick (drums), a student at the Count Basie Theater program in Red Bank, NJ. Lightning struck when they were introduced to Berklee School of Music student and bass player Sam Lucid, who immediately suggested fellow Berklee student and keyboard player Jeremy Kaplan. The addition of fellow Berklee student Brian Murray (guitar) in 2019 made for the quintessential final piece in the Dogs’ puzzle.

A string of successful local shows drove the development of a massive northeast fan base, affectionately known as the Dog Pound. The band’s astronomical growth culminated in an epic, sold-out performance at the legendary Stone Pony in Asbury Park during the summer of 2021. Armed with a fresh batch of new material, Dogs in a Pile is taking its perpetually evolving testament to the Great American Songbook on tour in 2022, visiting plenty of new cities and spreading good music and good energy to good people along the way.

THEY ARE NOT A GRATEFUL DEAD COVER BAND. If you're into the jam scene, you have to check them out. They're my number two right now, period.

  • BEST OPENING BAND EVER

by Melody on 10/24/23Brooklyn Bowl Philadelphia - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

This was a great show but I was particularly impressed with the opening band, Fat Mezz. They were extraordinary and I hope to see them again soon maybe headlining their own show. They deserve to be the main act, they are that good. Fantastic show and great time and venue.

  • The Future of Jam

by Joe on 7/11/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Dogs in a Pie are the best emerging jam band I've seen in many years. Their musicianship across its 5 members is pretty extraordinary, and song catalog has it all -spread across multiple genres with exploratory improvisation, hooky ballads, violence, great harmonies...you name it. Pure "IT"factor with a capitol X. If you haven't seen them yet, you will.

  • Tremendous!

by RussDR on 12/21/22The Stone Pony - Asbury ParkRating: 5 out of 5

These guys played and played and then played some more! It was a magical display of musical talent and raw energy. It was an absolute pleasure watching these guys play what seemed to come so easily. On top of that, they did a collaboration with the opening band Sicard Hollow and that's when the show really took off! I was told they practiced for a total of 45 minutes together before having to perform that night and to have played as amazing as they did blows my mind. I'm definitely hitting up their next show.

These guys really just know how to get the party going. The music they play just does something to your soul that makes you keep grooving. And the jams are so delectable that you don’t want them to end. This band is going big places and I’m happy to have seen them in the beginning. Because venues like The Stone Pony are going to be way too small to host the surplus of dogs wanting to be in that pile.

One heck of a show. True definition of a jam band. Everyone on stage was so lively and played tirelessly. Great time

  • Great show terrible venue

by Big red on 12/5/22The Foundry - PhiladelphiaRating: 2 out of 5

Dogs in a pipe was absolutely spectacular but the process to get into the venture was the most ridiculous I have ever experienced. First they asked that we remove everything from our pockets, not abnormal. Then proceeded to basically grope both the front and back of each patroon. When it was my turn and after I satisfied the typical procedure she security personnel then reached for my wallet and demanded that they look inside. After I refused to hand over my wallet they then requested that I take out all my cash so they can see inside the cash flap. When did the foundry start to hire TSA wannabe agents? Also I understand the want to keep everyone safe but this was just over the top. Also keep in mind this venue typically has 3 or more nitrous salespeople standing outside the venue after the show. I can’t imagine I’ll be back anytime soon.
