DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.

Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

  • Jazzy Evening in Tennessee Theater

by Uncle Me on 2/27/24Tennessee Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Absolutely stunningly beautiful theater. Convenient parking. Full bar setup in the entry hall. Diana Krall & her bassist & drummer were simply magnificent. It was an incredible evening after driving from East Texas just to attend this concerts

  • Good but lacking

by Ktrek on 2/27/24Tennessee Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 3 out of 5

I never thought that Diana Krall would come to Knoxville, TN but she did. The show was scheduled for 7:30 but she wouldn't take the stage until close to 7:45 and she ended by 9:30. Her setlist was fine but there were moments when you couldn't understand what she was saying. She hardly interacted with the audience at all and kind of seemed like she was going through the motions and possibly had been drinking. Her accompanying bass player and drummer were very good. However, on one number either they were out of time with her or she was with them for about 30 seconds. It seemed out of character but stuff happens in live shows. Personally, I would have like to have seen Krall push the boundaries a little more instead of playing it safe but I guess at this stage of her career she's not interested in that so much as collecting a check. The house was only filled about 3/4 full so I doubt she'll be back again

  • Incredible

I expected a good show, but it was incredible!! I will not miss her when she comes back to town.

  • Excellent concert and venue

by Rsporsche on 2/27/24Tennessee Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 5 out of 5

The Tennessee Theater was a great venue for Diana Krall. The concert was outstanding as were the three musicians. The bassist was very expressive and more than the usual background. The drummer created interesting spaces in between the rhythms Diana Krall was just her usual amazing

  • Sound was Great ... her voice ... magical !!

Sound was fabulous at the Tennessee Theater. Sound guys did great job !!

  • Good but too mellow

by Drummer on 2/27/24Tennessee Theatre - KnoxvilleRating: 2 out of 5

I love her music. But I don’t want to go out to a show to hear mellow wandering melodies. When she was doing the jazz standards and the American songbook , she was great. She should stop doing the other stuff. It puts us to sleep.

  • We love Diana Krall!

  • Diana Krall is Fantastic

by MV on 2/26/24Saenger Theatre Mobile - MobileRating: 5 out of 5

Our first time to the Saenger Theater in Mobile Alabama to see and hear Diana Krall. The theater is a good venue for a jazzy blues like performance. Diana was fantastic and sounded great. The accompaniment of the bass and drums were terrific. Great vibe around the theatre with plenty of places to grab a drink or meal. Parking was very close and easy.

  • Awesome!!

She never fails to entertain —excite—and engage her audience in great JAZZ—

  • Unbelievable Talent!

by Sandy on 2/26/24Saenger Theatre Mobile - MobileRating: 5 out of 5

Dianna is without a doubt one of the best, if not the very best, jazz artist in the world. Her seemingly effortless gift of jazz piano and contralto voice is awesome. Two things about her showmanship worth mentioning, in a suggestion to improve, would be for her to wear her long hair back out of her face. We watched mostly the side of her long blond hair hanging down covering her face during the entire concert. Also some of her lyrics were inaudible with her low, raspy voice. She should sing loud enough and enunciate enough so the lyrics, especially for the songs that were unfamiliar, come through to the audience. Otherwise, Five-Star, Classy & Wonderful !!

  • Disappointing

by Former Fan on 2/26/24Saenger Theatre Mobile - MobileRating: 2 out of 5

Diana Krall gave a disappointing and lack luster performance. We took friends to introduce them to Krall and were embarrassed. She didn't pay her biggest hits which is what everyone comes to hear. We all left feeling unfulfilled. We even heard an usher say that she was stoned. That's why I am a former fan.

  • Diana Krall in Mobile, AL

by Robin on 2/26/24Saenger Theatre Mobile - MobileRating: 5 out of 5

Recently attended Diana Krall in concert at the Saenger Theatre in Mobile. It was a lovely evening. Not only was her performance enchanting, Diana was personable and funny. If you get the chance to see her, don’t let the opportunity pass you by.

  • Underwhelming again…

    by Brent_Aube on 2/25/24Saenger Theatre Mobile - MobileRating: 3 out of 5

This was the second time for my wife and I to attend a Diana Krall concert (Our previous concert was in the New Orleans Seagner Theater, prior to the pandemic and it was very disappointing), this concert was an improvement over that concert, but we still walked away with the feeling that we had not seen a cohesive show. The playlist seemed to be ad hoc and at one point, she asked the audience what they wanted to hear, which gave the audience Cart Blanche to act like the fools that Mobile is so well known for… “if you give a mouse some cheese, it will ask for a glass of milk” is the maturity level of the audience and the comments from the audience went on to the point of second-hand embarrassment. We sat to the left of the stage and the piano was horizontal to the stage, pointing right and we spent the night looking at the back of her blond hair. We never got the connection with her that makes attending a concert worthwhile. She has a beautiful, smoky-sexy voice that got lost in what felt like the occasional mumbling of the words in her music, causing us to strain to make sense of her lyrics, losing the effect of her wonderful piano playing. When she pulled her hair back and sang as she is capable of, the effect of the music was incredible, everything we expected, but unfortunately it only comprised about 1/3 of the evening. We still love her music and will listen to everything she releases, but will refrain from seeing her in-person again.

  • Disappointing

by lladd on 2/25/24Saenger Theatre Mobile - MobileRating: 2 out of 5

She seemed incoherent and overmedicated. Could not remember words to songs and seemed to get lost on the piano. I was expecting an exceptional performance by a talented musician, and instead she seemed like a half-drunk novice attempting to play piano and sing in a small-town bar. Her two accompanying band members were excellent, however, and salvaged her performance. The stars are for them. But overall a waste of money. No longer a fan.

  • Musician

by Mel on 2/25/24Saenger Theatre Mobile - MobileRating: 5 out of 5

Ms Krall was sublime. A significant proportion of the attendees were behaviorally challenged; loud, disruptive and apparently without a sense of how to act in the presence of others.

  • Diana Krall

by Charlene on 2/25/24Saenger Theatre Mobile - MobileRating: 5 out of 5

Stage was intimate and loved the lighting. Only thing that was troubling was it was hard to see Diana's face while she sang. Her hair obscured her face most of the time. Music was terrific! Didn't appreciate audience yelling song titles at her. Rude.

  • Fabulous!

by NancySR on 2/25/24Saenger Theatre Mobile - MobileRating: 5 out of 5

Diana Krall was amazing! She played the piano and sang for a solid 90 minutes. Such a talented artist. I enjoyed every moment!

  • Sleepy, underwhelming & rather disappointing…

by Stephie Deaton on 2/25/24Saenger Theatre Mobile - MobileRating: 2 out of 5

I’ve been a fan of Diana’s for years but I was underwhelmed by the performance. Is there something going on personally in her life? We couldn’t hear anything she said - why wasn’t a vocal artist like this amplified better? The piano playing was spectacular, as always, though!!!! But she seemed sleepy, distracted, and unenthused overall. For such expensive tickets, I expected SO much more. She felt like she was “phoning it in” a bit…. Her voice for 90% of it was just “ok”. But her finale song was stunning! (I wish she would have brought that level of energy throughout…) The song choices were mostly sad songs - is her marriage struggling? The genius-level piano playing is the only thing allowing me to give her a 2. We just hope she’s ok on a personal level - and we are definitely still huge fans… but likely will never be attending a live performance again. Which is sad…

  • Not quite but almost

by CrazChik on 2/25/24Saenger Theatre Mobile - MobileRating: 2 out of 5

It did not appear that Diane Krall did any sound check beforehand. First half of concert, she was too soft, out of tune and forgot lyrics and/or the melody so she had to start songs over frequently and apologized for it. Very disappointing compared to the price of our tickets. If she was not ready to perform again, she should have cancelled her tour.
