DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.

Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

  • Diana Krall -- the Real Deal!

by LesN on 7/3/09Cape Cod Melody Tent - HyannisRating: 5 out of 5

The Diana Krall Concert at Cape Cod's Melody Tent was a real joy -- I am so pleased that I was finally able to see Diana and her teriffic group of musicians in a live concert! And it was really nice to see Diana escorted to the stage by her husband, Elvis Costello, and to see him give her a loving kiss. Now to the performance -- it was great! The songs were nicely varied, a good selection of my favorites from Diana's CD releases. The quartet with Diana on piano, Robert Hurst on bass, Anthony Wilson on guitar, and Jeff Hamilton on drums was really "together" and was very exciting to listen to; and the sound quality in the tent was very good too. Diana Krall has it all -- a beautiful woman with a lovely voice, and she really plays a swinging piano.

Diana Krall gets better and better. The intimate setting of the Melody Tent and her trio was perfect. She is an extremely skillful jazz pianist and soulful/romantic singer. See her when she comes around again!

Passion, Talent, Generosity and Beauty....an incredible package indeed. Musically speaking...Oscar Peterson, Rosemary Clooney and Nat King Cole would have to be impressed, no doubt about it....Yeah, i Adore Diana Krall without condition:) And Her Accompanists' really should have agreed to come home with me:) alas! Just so we're clear on this, i was thrilled with Her show~

  • unforgettable night

by srrp on 7/3/09Cape Cod Melody Tent - HyannisRating: 5 out of 5

Diana Krall was amazing. Her voice was in top sultry form, her piano playing was majestical. The combination made for a truly unforgettable concert experience. She was escorted to the stage by her husband, Elvis Costello, who left her with a kiss, but remained to watch the show from the back. The revolving stage at the Melody Tent enabled the audience to both watch her expressive features, and at times view her hands on the keyboard. Her backup band was also in top form, iteracting with her seamlessly. Even for a Diana Krall fan, I left the concert awed and impressed by her show.

  • Dianna was great!

by catesmom on 7/3/09Cape Cod Melody Tent - HyannisRating: 3 out of 5

Dianna Krall was fantastic! I really enjoyed listening to her play and sing. However, the audience was terrible! They were noisy, rude and made it difficult to enjoy the show. There were women behind us that talked the whole time, people taking pictures and being rude. I would have thought this common at a rock concert but this was jazz! Also would not have expected this rude behavior from the older crowd. I was embarrassed to be associated with the people in the audience.

  • Diana Krall soars while audience swoons

by Rick on 7/3/09Cape Cod Melody Tent - HyannisRating: 5 out of 5

The Melody Tent is an outstanding venue in most respects. The fact that it's sometimes on the flightpath to the Hyannis Airport is of minor consequence when one as humorous as Diana makes the outside noise an integral part of her audience raport. She was luminous under the spotlight and everyone in the theatre in the round was thrilled to see her head on on several occasions. We haven't seen her this radiant in a while...Her solo piano playing was unusually lengthy for the set, though she humorously returned to one vocal after the Steinway was having difficulty responding in the Cape's fog-shrouded evening. Her keyboard riffs and sultry voice soared, her torches were white hot, her raport with her fans incomperable and the good feeling was returned throughout the evening.

  • Diana Krall is fabulous!

Diana Krall and her trio are not to be missed. Her voice and jazz interpretation is incredible! In addition, the jazz improv -- Diana's piano and her trio -- is amazing! Saw her twice this Spring - once at the Providence Performing Arts Center and once at the Cape Cod Melody Tent. The opening act at CCMT was not great and Diana did not appear until 9:00 (was an 8:00 start) Preferred the PPAC as there was no opening act and she came on right as scheduled!

  • Diana Krall--better than ever!

by carla on 7/3/09Cape Cod Melody Tent - HyannisRating: 5 out of 5

Have followed Diana for many years...even at the opening of the Montreal Jazz Festival. Saw her last at Melody Tent...just after the babies were born. Must say that last nites performance went to another level. Her piano playing has jumped several levels, if that is possible, and this was the best show ever! My husband and I still wonder...is she a pianist who sings or a singer who plays? Doesn't matter...she is BOTH! Her trio is the best around...all three men "groove" with Diana.

  • Diana Krall ........always a pleasure!!

by Aquagal on 7/3/09Cape Cod Melody Tent - HyannisRating: 4 out of 5

Diana Krall has only gotten better as she continues to entertain her audiences with her sultry voice and "magnificent fingers'. Her talent is exceptional. What a wonderful expereience . Of course, one can not control the stupidity of certain people in the audience. If I were the manager of the theater, I would have taken the woman who kept yelling at Diana and removed her from the audience.

  • Can that woman play the piano or what!

by BakaBeth on 7/3/09Cape Cod Melody Tent - HyannisRating: 5 out of 5

Have loved her since I first heard her. What fun to see her live with the band guys; amazing to watch how all their hands works those instruments!

  • Diana Krall in Concert @ Melody Tent

by GuillermoG on 7/3/09Cape Cod Melody Tent - HyannisRating: 5 out of 5

Diana was relaxed, cool, humorous, and moving in her delivery . . . her quartet was top notch - especially the guitarist! At times I had tears in my eyes - the Jobim renditions were smooth and emotional - with just the right touch of Brazilian flair.

  • Worth every penny!

Not only was it my first time seeing Diana Krall live but my first time at the Cape Cod Melody Tent. Seats were comfy and had good view. Revolving stage gives different aspect of performance. Diana was her sexy, soulful self!! She takes the time to showcase her band in almost every song. She played mostly standards and a few songs from her newly released CD. I noticed she did not perform any of the songs she has written. I think she has a great handle on what her fans like best. Special surprise was having Elvis Costello, her husband, quietly escort her on stage!
