DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT
Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.
Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).
Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

Wonderful show. Intimate setting. Diana is sooo talented. I will see her again and again!
Just an incredible show...even better than we even hoped. Such an intimate performance and thank you diana for a wonderful night. This was tracys Christmas present and she loved every second of it
Just Diana, a piano covered with sheet music and some theatrical smoke. I have listened to Diana Krall's recorded music for at least 10 years and loved the sort of Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra vibe with her sultry voice. Simple piano, bass, and electric guitar, with perhaps some light drums made it the perfect chill music. This simplied concert setup made for a very informal, intimate, feeling. She even remarked about this is how she plays in her living room and her jazz piano playing abilities were on display as much as her voice. The informality showed itself when once she forgot the words, just stopped and said as much and another time where her piano playing was going somewhere that she didn't like and she just stopped and said, "I thought I was going somewhere with this, but no." I am not sure how her voice normally sounds live, but it seemed like her lower register was compromised a bit as most the low notes ended up sounding spoken and a bit raspy rather than sung. It really didn't detract from the overall concert since the atmosphere created by the smoke and simple set made it feel like you were listening in a small smoke filled jazz club from 20 years ago. Overall a very good performance. I would like to see her again playing as a trio with a bass and guitar, especially the bass at it enhances the unique phrasing and timing she uses when singing.
I have seen Diana Krall 4 times now. The first about 30 some years ago at a small venue jazz festival and was blown away! This was the first time I got to see her and her piano- solo- no other musicians and it was a great night!!! She always has a great group of musicians surrounding her and I love their solos and I put but this was much more intimate ❤️
What an amazing show. The interaction with the audience provided a more personal feel to the show.
I really thought she would have accompanied with her bass guitarist and drums! Although her singing and piano was wonderful!
Diana Krall is a great talent and so I want to acknowledge that from the start. I have to say I was disappointed with the show for the following reasons: - no band members such as bass and drums (just Diana and the piano) - lighting was horrible. She was illuminated by some overhead lights and between the low capacity of those lights and the fog machine pretty much could not see her - was she inebriated? On at least 3 maybe 4 songs she lost her way and either started over or came to a complete stop and resumed. In one instance when she came to a complete stopped I heard her say, "What the heck!"Her banter with the audience was also nonsensical at times, "I am so glad you all came out to play this evening"
What a waste of money! She was off key, forgot the words to some songs, stopped playing the piano midstream. I was so disappointed. I thought she was impaired or sick. I wouldn't reccomend going to her concert.
It was a great concert in a great location. The event started nearly 20' late, which may be caused by people arriving late. Anyhow, I don't like such delays. The audience was very engaged but its nit necessary to cry and to clap before the songs end. Concessions are available, but a bit pricey. Overall, great performance.
I've been a fan of Diana Krall's since "The Look of Love"album came out, as has my wife. We were thrilled to see her scheduled at the Hershey Theatre, a first class venue and so amazing that people take tours of it even when it's empty. Ticket prices were very reasonable, for a change. When we arrived, we saw that she was playing solo. Trust me, that was more than enough. From the very start her playing was as fiery as her voice was smouldering, sometimes a whisper. Kudos to whoever mixes her vocals. I have never heard a full theater sit so quietly that you could hear the ventilation fans! Her selections were choice cuts of the Great American Songbook. She was also so relaxed and funny that one would remember that she did piano bars during her student days. After a few numbers, she said, "What do you want to hear?"Of course, bedlam followed for a few seconds. Some guy started singing (bellowing, really) "Cry Me A River!"She said, "Oh, I accompany singers. Go ahead!"Big laughs. The punchline, though, is that as one of her four encore tunes, she did "Cry Me A River"after saying, "I didn't forget,"and just crushed it. Bottom line: don't miss an opportunity to see her. You can't see Nat King Cole or Oscar Peterson anymore, but Diana Krall is in that class and you'll see why when you see her in concert.
Diana Krall was engaging, funny, kind and appreciative all while performing amazing tunes and captivating the audience. The unfortunate aspect is Hershey Theatre and how they require you to carry a small wrislet into the theatre. For someone with a medical concern, you are asked to carry a see thru bag. In the nature of security, this is understandable. However, Hershey caused the event to start almost 20 minutes late due to their required rules. They need to adjust the admission time to allow for their time constraints. This is the second event in which this has occurred at Hershey Theatre. The last even was almost 30 minutes late to start. This was not the performers or the audiences fault.
She sounded tired; her voice not clear. He piano playing was excellent. We, as many did, left early.
Diane performed with no accompaniment. While I read other reviews that said sometimes the band played too much, this would not be the case at Tanger. Diane was engaged with the audience asking and receiving requests. I was sitting in orchestra center about 12 rows back from the pit. The problem was the audio was a little low and was panned hard left. I was watching her sing and the sound came from the left exit door. There was nothing from the center or right arrays. It would have been interesting to know how it sounded in other locations. The performance was good and even though I missed some of the soft vocals I enjoyed the performance.
Been a fan for decades. First discovered her when I worked at a jazz label in Austin in the mid to late '90's, but somehow I've never had a chance to see her until now. She came to Mobile! How lucky we are! I seriously couldn't contain my excitement. Thank you so much, Diana. You are loved here.
During Diana’s first song, she was leaving off half a line of verse, numerous times. After 6 songs, I turned to my friend and asked, Do you think she is drunk or something? She said yes! Her piano playing was spot on, but her singing was weak. She did get stronger as the night we on. She shuffled many sheets of music throughout the night. Having seen her before, it was a disappointing evening.
Ms. Krall's ability on the keyboard is undeniably a force of nature. Her voice is smoky and evocative. But what stood out most in her wonderful performance at The Wind Creek Events Center March 1, was her ability to turn this jam-packed, giant black box of a venue (which Seth Myers said looked like a place where they stage MMA fights) into an unimaginably intimate salon where a few friends get together to sing along with the best "accompanist"in the world!
The ease of getting to the windcreek event venue is stellar. So wonderful to see shows here. Well run security and ushers and a breeze to get into and out of. Diana Krall played a spectacular performance too!
I loved every minute of the show-Diana from the moment she stepped out she was playing the piano-singing and interacting with the audience..no glitz-no unnecessary stage props-just Diana her piano and her beautiful talent..I was entertained and enjoyed the whole show..I brought my musician Friend and he could not say enough about her pure talent..we will definitely go back to see Diana again..Truly amazing..Thank You for sharing your talent Miss Krall..
Diana is the ultimate entertainer: down to earth, extremely talented and skilled at connecting with her audience. A wonderful show by a beautiful artist.
