DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT
Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.
Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).
Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

Diana is a great singer and still sings amazing, it was a beautiful performance, and her band was also great!
I love Diana Krall but I honestly was expecting much more from the concert. I understand that maybe she was having a bad day. Hopefully I will see her again on a better condition and perform a better concert.
Had a beautiful lovely evening with my partner Susan at Kiav Center in Albuquerque. Diana and her master accomplished musicians were great. The song choices were never better and fit the evening beautifully. I've wanted to see Diana Krall for as long as I remember and she didn't disappoint. It was as lovely an evening we've had for a long time.
Thought the Musicians were exceptionally talented and Diana was good but wished she had been a little more energetic. I love her music and style. We enjoyed the concert for sure.
Excellent concert! I've seen her twice before, but this time was front row, directly in front of her. Every nuance of her singing and playing, right there. The intimate communication between band members. And the band! John Clayton on upright bass right behind her, every movement of his fingers on the neck of the bass, so easy to watch from here. Love that smile! Jeff Hamilton on drums (unfortunately, the kit was hidden behind the piano from this viewpoint, but I could see his face), and Anthony Wilson on guitar. Wonderful delivery of these songs. Glancing back at the audience, apparently a sold out show, or very close to it. Loved every minute of it!
The venue is great because it's not too big and the acoustics are good. Diana was great, albeit her voice has lost some of its strength. Her piano playing is over the top awesome and the accompanying musicians were amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed it and would happily attend future concerts.
Instead of merely playing tracks from her albums, Diana gave a true jazz concert that featured her very talented combo. It was 90 minutes with 2 encores of true Jazz. It was a flashback to the good old days.
The music and presentation were not for me. Ms Krall talked her way through most songs. How many arrangements of a song can you listen to?
The best word I can think of to describe this concert was “disappointing”. My husband and I have loved her music for years and were very much looking forward to this concert. Her guitarist, stand up bass, and drummer were all amazing. And there’s no question she can play an amazing jazz piano. But she was slurring her words, struggling to complete a sentence, her singing was often pitchy and at best, she was whispering most of the lyrics. Frequently she would stop singing or playing during a song. I don’t know what issues she’s dealing with, but she needs to stop touring and focus on her health.
As a huge fan of hers, and having seen her live several years ago, we were shocked to hear and watch her last night. Somethings very wrong with her, not sure what it is, but she sounded really bad at certain low soft voice and whole cadence was jerky / off. Previously she interacted with the audience, being funny, telling stories, but last night in Dallas it was minimal and awkward. Also missed her longtime guitarist as part of the group. She could still play the piano and jazz it up with the drummer and bassist occasionally, but even that sometimes seemed off beat and lost. Sad, and also a bit miffed in lack of disclosure of her state upon filling the Winspear with patrons who've spent $$$ to see her.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Diana Krall, couldn’t wait for the concert. Hadn’t seen her in years so was really looking forward to it. Her playing the piano and voice was great. But, her stage presence that night was very off/strange. She couldn’t seem to finish her stories she was trying to tell. Awkward!! The end of the concert was abruptly finished. Not even sure she finished the song she was playing. She just stop and said I’m done. A little disappointing.
Listening to Diana Krall singing and speaking felt like I was in her living room casually enjoying the evening. Yet, her voice has lost some resonance. When playing the piano, she sometimes banged the keys too hard, missed some notes and made some comments. I had a hard time understanding the lyrics of at least 2 pieces that I really would have liked to hear. It would have helped having other instruments as well. I have loved her music over the years.
I love Diana Krall's music but the show was incredibly boring. It was a one man show and she did nothing to engage the audience. It felt more like I was attending a recitle with the performer being socially award. It would have been much nicer if she had a band and also engaged with her fans.
She started 10 min late, and I got the sense that she didn't want to be there and was doing the bare minimum to get through the concert. No backup instruments other than her at the piano which would have been fine for a more intimate concert if she had taken the time to build some rapport with the audience. Instead, she mumbled at lot and didn't even complete some of her sentences. For $100+ per ticket and 2.5 hr drive we invested, it wasn't worth it.
Diana Krall did not disappoint - her voice, piano playing skills and repertoire were delightful! I was a little disappointed with only a quarter over an hour playing time - I am used to 1.5 hours plus encores. Was my first experience at Fallsview, not sure if that is typical playing time there? The venue is great! Great sound, nice layout, not a bad seat anywhere. But it was very cold! I had to keep my jacket on and still felt chilly on my knees wearing a skirt with nylons. Turning down the A/C a bit would be an improvement. Another would be to permit photos but not videos during shows. We had a guy ahead of us who recorded the entire concert - blocking the view of the person ahead of us. Thankfully, I was not affected, but felt sorry for that woman. We were in the 100 level - the more pricey seats - and all she saw were his arms and his phone up in the air. Prohibiting videos would prevent that scenario. Otherwise, a wonderful evening! Thank you!
She’s quirky, and fun. Felt intimate even in a big venue. She’s super talented! 10/10
The concert was very short and ended with a song that ended in the middle. Was very disappointing.
Amazing show!! So intimate! I truly loved it!! Thank you Diana Krall!!!
Love Ms Krall and was not disappointed. Especially enjoyed that it was a trio and her band mates her were excellent.
Great show. Diana Krall has a great voice and singing style.
