DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.

Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

  • Happy jazz fan

by Lookout on 5/28/25Paramount Theatre - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

As an adult who played bass in a high school stage band and jazz choir and attended the Stan Kenton Jazz camp decades ago, this concert was a treasure! Loved all the improvisation and enjoyed Diane’s interactions with the audience. We’ve waited years to see Diane in person and are glad we came.

  • Shocking how great

by CoupleBigFans on 5/28/25Paramount Theatre - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

Diana was amazing. Her piano playing was cathartic. She is also one of the greatest jazz singers of all time. The players were fantastic. They were tight and exuded jazz with expression that is rare to experience.

  • Diana Krall

by MJ on 5/26/25Paramount Theatre - SeattleRating: 3 out of 5

The venue was beautiful, I love the Paramount in Seattle. Diana Krall's instrument performances were spectacular. We just could not hear Diana sing or speak. That was most disappointing. We were setting just a few rows up from the stage and on the side set of seats. We should have heard her loud and clear. She is a soft piano player and a soft singer. I wish she had more energy to play and sing and to engage with the audience. Her back was facing us.

  • A Concerned Fan

by IDREAM on 5/25/25Paramount Theatre - SeattleRating: 1 out of 5

I love Diana Krall, I am a HUGE fan. I have seen her in concert about 2 dozen times throughout the last 20+ years. I've traveled near and far just to hear her velvety voice. She was the most incredible performer, her voice, her playing, she was impeccable. I also looked forward to her interaction with the audience. She was always comical, witty and so sharp. So, I feel like I'm qualified to review this most recent performance. I am incredibly concerned for her. Something is clearly wrong. She was not able to remember the lyrics, she sounded muffled and broken. She couldn't even play like her normal self. This was not her. It appears like there is some sort of cognitive impairment or maybe even something neurological that is worsening. I love this artist and it pained me to see her as a shell of her former self. Please, if anyone reads this that can make a difference please help her. We don't need to know any details as the public. Just please protect this icon and her legacy. There is nobody else like her, there may never be anyone like her again. If you do go to her concert, don't expect to hear her sing that much, she really tries but clearly she can't perform like before. She can't seem to get her voice out, and it seems that she can't play and sing at the same time anymore. She is still kind and thankful for her audience but I'm not sure she's aware of what is happening. It's so sad to watch. Her band mates try to keep things together with fantastic solo instrumentals as she watches. They work so hard and they smile and watch her, and try to help her along. But, honestly this was more like a ticket to watch an intimate jazz session trio as Diana Krall listens from her piano bench. I really hope she will be ok. I think though, that it is time for her to hang up the traveling boots and take care of herself. For me, sadly, this was my last Diana Krall concert. I wish you well Diana. 💔

  • Wonderful band & piano singing was off!

by Sherl on 5/25/25Paramount Theatre - SeattleRating: 4 out of 5

Diana Krall band was phenomenal, her piano playing amazing but her singing was off. I thought maybe she had a sore throat or was sick with a cold. She didn’t sing very much and it lacked in precision. She forgot the words at one point. I saw her at the Triple Door, a few years ago and wow her voice was amazing, she didn’t have that great band, but didn’t need it.

  • A Fantastic Jazz Band

by KirklandMike on 5/25/25Paramount Theatre - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

Diana and her band play together as hand-in-glove. Anthony Wilson played guitar spectacularly, John Clayton is one of my favorite jazz bassists and Jeff Hamilton on drums carried Diana through the show. Diana had a good night but I've seen her vocals be more clear and she didn't use the beauty of her contralto gift as much as I had hoped. There were flourishes where she shined. I actually worried that she was not well. All-in-all, I was in the orchestra pit at the Paramount enjoying a wonderful concert.

  • A very good show in a great venue

by Tal on 5/25/25Paramount Theatre - SeattleRating: 4 out of 5

Our seats were front row of the mezzanine. Each instrument, including Diana's voice, was so perfect and understated, even during the solos, but together they are so amazing. They did not have Diana or her Piano mic'd up very well for our section. The piano wasn't bright sounding and Diana was under mic'd.....except in the bathroom, where they had it nailed. The Paramount is a great venue

  • Not so great

by Kat on 5/25/25Paramount Theatre - SeattleRating: 2 out of 5

Pretty disappointing , voice too quiet and beat too slow. Highly formulaic… she didn’t play any of her own pieces. This is the second time we’ve gone to see her and we’re now done! A shame!

  • The Best

by jeih on 5/25/25Paramount Theatre - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

A wonderful evening was spent at the beautiful Paramount Theater listening to Diana Krall and her band. She was superb, as always. Her band members are equally talented and amazing. The theater staff was cordial, gracious, and helpful, something difficult to be when pressed by a huge crowd.

  • Wonderful

by Tom on 5/25/25Paramount Theatre - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

Diana Krall is ‘still wonderful after all these years’. She was great, sound system might have been better, but that’s in the Paramount not her.

  • Amazing Talent - challenging performance

    by Vashon_Islander on 5/25/25Paramount Theatre - SeattleRating: 3 out of 5

We came with high-expectations for an evening of smooth jazz by one of the absolute greats of our era. We arrived early and found our seats with plenty of time - kudos to the event staff and and ushers! Once in our seats the challenges began. The show started +/-20 minutes late, even with a later than typical start time of 8:00 pm. There appeared to be quite a bit of confusion over seat location and tickets on the main floor not sure why. The set began without any introduction or preamble...and the sound was muddled and Diana's lyrics garbled. Disappointing. The sound was very dialed in for the rest of the musicians, indicating appropriate sound checks and adjustments. As each song progressed Diana seemed to be concerned with the set-up, calling over a tech at least twice to regarding her set-up. The first (and only) set lasted about 50 minutes, no intermission, and by the start of the last song many patrons started to need a break to go to the toilets, disrupting the performance. I can imagine many thought there would be an intermission to allow the performers to do the same. Nope - one set and lights up. A third of the crowd got up and left without even trying to encourage an encore. If this is a symptom of the production support at the Paramount, I won't be back for another show. If this was an off-night for Diana, I hope she gets better soon.

  • Something was wrong

by Buoybell on 5/25/25Paramount Theatre - SeattleRating: 2 out of 5

While the rest of the quartet was outstanding Diane’s vocals were weak and sometimes her piano work was sloppy. Had difficulty playing and singing at the same time. Voice was soft and raspy like she had a cold. Was disappointed as my wife and I like her very much

  • Krall was great but audience!

by Cindy on 5/25/25Paramount Theatre - SeattleRating: 1 out of 5

I have waited so long to see Diana Krall and she and her musicians were superb. But there was a section of rows towards the middle that ruined the concert by some arriving late requiring people to stand up while they got into their seats, getting up and down during the whole concert to leave/come back to the hall and then leaving early. My god, as if they had no concert decor!! Ruined the event

  • Underwhelming

by Jazzy on 5/25/25Paramount Theatre - SeattleRating: 3 out of 5

I’d been looking forward to seeing Diana Krall for a long time. I spent a lot for the tickets and was frankly disappointed. The overall volume of the group was too soft. Her mic was way down and it was hard to hear her words and when she spoke, couldn’t understand her. She seemed unengaged and lethargic. Maybe she was sick as she asked for water and kept talking to some assistant. Anyway, it wasn’t what I expected based on her reputation.

  • Super disappointed

    by Love2hearJazz on 5/23/25Rating: 1 out of 5

Seattle. WA. Was so excited to see Diana Krall in concert but the evening ended up being the worst experience in a long time. Very little vocal, alot of improvisational instrumental from the band, very low energy from her and in the concert hall. The band members were OK. She had very little interaction with the audience. Diana seemed strung out and disengaged the entire time. Only played 75 minutes. I came wanting to hear what I have fallen in love with in her albums but that was not the case. If you want a low energy jazz performance I guess you might like it but if you come to hear classic Diana Krall, don't waste your money.

  • San Diego Humphreys

by Cynthia on 5/17/25Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San DiegoRating: 2 out of 5

I thought there would be an entire band. It was just four total. It wasn’t engaging and it seemed like she was just running through it like a practice or something

  • Humphrey’s

by AlohaDi on 5/16/25Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San DiegoRating: 3 out of 5

Humphrey’s by the Bay at Shelter Island is a stunning setting. Our seats were center stage second row. We had a satisfactory view of the side of Diana’s head and her guitar player. The piano blocked our view of her drummer and her stand up bass player. The sound cut in and out. The seats are TIGHT. The gentleman to my left fell asleep at one point and ended up leaning on me. The gentleman to our right couldn’t see much at all and did not clap once. Very crabby. We felt cramped, crowded and claustrophobic. We got up after the 9th song and stood in the back. The sound was perfect. No cut outs. And we could see the entire ensemble. If I fly back down to San Diego to attend a concert at Humphrey’s it will not be in any row other than the front row or the first come first serve seating on the sides.

  • Enjoyed the concert

by Donna on 5/16/25Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San DiegoRating: 4 out of 5

I enjoyed the concert, the musicians and Diana‘s piano playing was impeccable. I really enjoyed the songs. The venue is beautiful and the sound system is fabulous. It was a little cold that night and there weren’t very many space heaters out. It was upsetting to me that so many people left because of the temperature.

  • Top Notch

by Victory on 5/16/25Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

As good as it gets for this kind of jazz presentation. You won't get sad songs from Diana Krall, maybe some wistfulness and melancholy in addition to the happy sentiments. Professionalism to the hilt, and an audience that was listening and respectful and breathing it all in.

  • Disappointing!

by MD on 5/16/25Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San DiegoRating: 3 out of 5

Many people left during the concert. It was slow moving and Diana did not really engage with the audience. Her band very good but she needed to pick up the pace and seem enthused.
