About

DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.

Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

  • Music was great

by Jak on 6/25/25Stifel Theatre - Saint LouisRating: 4 out of 5

The musicians accompanying Ms Krall were fabulous. Her performance seemed ‘off’ for some reason. She seemed to be in a daze most of the evening.

  • All great, but short

by Bill on 6/25/25Stifel Theatre - Saint LouisRating: 4 out of 5

Diana’s phrasing both with her voice and on the piano are wonderful. The bass and drum accompaniments were great! The sound was very good. Truly appreciate her artistry, but the set was shorter than I expected.

  • A stunning performance.

Diana Krall is a consummate and innovative artist. Her improvisations spin webs of delight through out each song she does. Her musicianship is unmatched and her backup musicians follow her lead beautifully. Her style and humor grace her appearances. She embodies each song with brilliance of thought and emotion. The audio at the Stifel was perfect, making each note and phrase ring true. She is just plain great!

  • Enjoyed the show immensely

Diana Krall makes wonderful music. She has sold tens of millions of albums and won many awards for good reason. I've read criticisms of her live shows and believe those criticisms were written by people who do not understand that live performances are often very different than the recorded versions. She is a jazz musician and improvisation is the foundation of jazz. She performed with two other outstanding jazz musicians who will also improvise. So the performance is going to be unpredictable. That's one of the reasons why fans go to live performances. Ms. Krall discussed this during her performance. Paraphrasing: "I sing well. I play piano well. Sometimes I do both at the same time."In the studio, she can play the piano and then return later to sing over her piano recording. She can do this in a studio countless times until she gets a take she and her producer really like. At a live performance, she only gets to do this once. Her music is complex and layered. It is challenging to perform her music live for those reasons and (as others have mentioned) she paused and played piano without vocals... or sang without piano... and at times she relied on her backing musicians while she sang or paused. She often do this mid-lyric. Some of the critical comments said she looked "confused"... I disagree... it was glorious... it was fresh... it was improvised... it was unpredictable.... it was GREAT Jazz. Ms. Krall is a national treasure and I am grateful she still tours and records. Thank you for a very enjoyable evening... and thank you to the two brilliant musicians who accompanied you.

  • Highly recommend Diana Krall and the venue!

by Mark B. on 6/24/25Stifel Theatre - Saint LouisRating: 5 out of 5

I had expected Diana to be back up with a large orchestra and band. I was pleasantly surprised that it was only her, a bassist, and drummer. An intimate trio and performance. The preceding reviews of her early concerts this were erroneous. Diana sang and played 95 percent of the time. The erroneous reviews were just that, erroneous!!!

  • Did Krall Enthrall?

by Good Fellow on 6/24/25Stifel Theatre - Saint LouisRating: 3 out of 5

maybe i had my hopes too high but i left disappointed. have not seen her perform before but i was left with the impression the type of show she put on was better suited to a small jazz club or bistro and not a historic large theatre venue on the main drag. I wasn't expecting anything like a band, the trio was obviously more than capable of delivering anything on the playlist, but many of the selections were slow, moody, vocally quiet, and often times the audience was confused just when to applaud at the end because the end was often so hard to determine. I didnt expect to recognize all of the songs either, but her choice of an encore seemed a bit of a let down - very quiet, lyrically repetitive and uninteresting in my experience. Her engagement with the audience was nice, and we appreciated the story she told of how St. Louis was important in her early performing career. Although the piano was facing stage left, she often turned to face the audience when she could break from playing so all could see her. Very considerate of her. I think the single 90-minute set could have been split into two parts, with maybe one set being the quiet moody music she does so well, and the other featuring some of her more upbeat hits, if there was a need to keep them separate. I learned in advance she was contracted for 90 minutes, and with the single encore, came out to exactly that. Gives one the impression if she tried to avoid one.minute.more. Even for St. Louis.

  • Mellow!

by Mark on 6/24/25Stifel Theatre - Saint LouisRating: 4 out of 5

Diana Krall is a great jazz pianist! Backed up with a base and drums, good times. I just wish she would have played a few more up beat, faster jazzy songs that I have heard from her on Pandora. A two song encore was nice, but also both very mellow, she could have done something to get us up and jazzing out the door!

  • A lovely, nuanced performance

by RollingRock on 6/24/25Stifel Theatre - Saint LouisRating: 5 out of 5

A wonderful evening with a talented performer and backing artists. Some attendees may bve been expecting a larger, orchestral experience, but a small trio is where I've always felt Diana is most at home. Terrific acoustics for an intimate and subtle performannce. I've seen her several times going back to the 90s, and she's just getting better with age.

  • Uplifting Jazz

by Jazzman Steve on 6/24/25Stifel Theatre - Saint LouisRating: 5 out of 5

Diana Krall showed that she is the top female jazz musician around. The bass and drum accompaniment was also topnotch. She also had good conversation with the audience.

  • Love old school songs sung by old time greats!

by JMac on 6/24/25Stifel Theatre - Saint LouisRating: 4 out of 5

Diana is a great jazz pianist - and her ensemble is very good too. She is smooth operator engaging and reacting to the audience. Her style is great. Her voice is raspy, and fits the motif, but if you are expecting beautiful vocals, that is not her. Love old school songs sung by old time greats!

  • It was horrible

  • Diana Krall Fantastic

by dan on 6/23/25Rating: 5 out of 5

Diana Krall put on a great show at the Steifel Theatre Saturday night 6/21/2025. She played about an hour and 40 minutes. Shet started off with several songs with her band. Then they left the stage for about 3 or 4 songs and came back. The highlight of the show was when it was just her and her piano. She communicated with the crowd a good amount and showed a great since of humor. The crowd really loved her, and she was very appreciative. I have seen her 4 times and will see her again. Fantastic show Diana.

  • Soulful

by AMW on 6/23/25The Lerner Theatre - ElkhartRating: 5 out of 5

First time seeing Diana Krall in concert and it was amazing. Bought the tickets for my husband. He’s the fan, but I think I enjoyed it as much or more than he did! The performance was very intimate with just Diana and two backup musicians. if you get the chance, I highly recommend seeing her in concert

  • Awesome!!

Diana did not dissappoint! Ans her bass player,Sebastian was simply amazing!!!

  • Excellent!

    by Grafiti4u on 6/22/25The Lerner Theatre - ElkhartRating: 5 out of 5

I never knew a piano, a base, and drums could play so softly! Perfect compliment to Diana‘s soft melodic voice. The Lerner was sold out, but you could hear pin drop when they were playing and she was singing. Absolutely beautiful evening of soft jazz music!

  • meh

by Attender on 6/22/25The Lerner Theatre - ElkhartRating: 2 out of 5

Diana Krall started the show about 8:15pm and ended at 9:30pm sharp. She came back for one encore. She did very little engagement with the audience and, when she did, seemed to struggle with her train of thought. Her set list included the standard tunes she is famous for; however, much of her performance was a bit uninspired, as if just going through the motions.

  • Disappointed

by Breeze on 6/22/25The Lerner Theatre - ElkhartRating: 3 out of 5

Was excited to hear her sing but she sang very few songs. It was more of a jazz session where she played a few notes and then the bass and drums took over. For the price I paid for my seats and the concert was over in 75 minutes… truly disappointing. She was having an off night or there was something going on… not the concert I expected.

  • Sublime....

by Ron P on 6/22/25The Lerner Theatre - ElkhartRating: 5 out of 5

Diana Krall is one of the most superb vocalists I've ever witnessed live. Nuanced, breathy and fully engaging, I was blown away! And she is a superb pianist. I would pay again the premium I paid for these tickets, and in a heartbeat. A++++

  • Diana Krall was a delight!

by JN on 5/28/25Paramount Theatre - SeattleRating: 4 out of 5

This is our third time to a live performance by Diana Krall. We’ve been fans since the 1990s and will continue to be so, she is so talented and completely worth the price of a ticket. Having said that, this is the first time we have seen her in a US venue and wondered if that figured into the rudeness of the audience. The show was supposed to start at 8 pm, it started a bit late, and STILL people were strolling in for another half hour! People were going in and out (to the washroom I guess?) throughout, and Ms Krall had hardly played the last note of her final number when so many people leaped up and ran for the exits. It was bizarre! For those of us who stayed, we got 2 lovely encores - and a bit more breathing space. My final criticism is that there was no announcement at the beginning about people making phone videos of the performance. I thought that was against the rules, but clearly not universally understood. I think the venue management has a lot to answer for. It is only due to Ms. Krall's talent and ability to set a mood that we enjoyed the concert as much as we did.
