DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.

Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

  • Fantastic

by Bub on 7/17/23Rating: 5 out of 5

The Venue at Thunder Valley is beautiful and a great place for a concert. Diana has returned to her roots featuring the talent of her band. She touches your soul in a deep way. Only complaint, the guy behind me talked the entire time

  • Excellent concert, abysmal entry station

by Swedish Musiclover on 7/15/23Rating: 4 out of 5

Diana Krall was great as always. Her band was top notch and her playing and singing second to none. Great song selection too. I only have two gripes: 1) Many seats in the reserved section were empty, probably due to the ticketmaster robbers charging exorbitant fees for nothing; 2) The entry security station at the south gate was a complete disaster. There were about 20 people in front of us but took 30 min to get through, and they even forgot to scan out tickets. Incompetence.

  • More singing please!!!

by Naka on 7/15/23Rating: 3 out of 5

Waiting in line standing on slanted uneven lumpy “grass” over a hour was excruciating in the sun at the South Gate. Our tickets has a lawn section on them but lawn wasn’t labeled that way AT ALL!! What a disappointment—we ended up WAY in the back with high back chair neighbors (even though we had the requested low back chairs.) Ms. Krall’s voice is still as wonderful as ever but we wish she would have done more singing and less “all over the board riffing”. My husband was major disappointed (and he’s a music guy) !!

  • Beautiful venue and music but chatty audience

by First time at CSM on 7/13/23Rating: 4 out of 5

First concert my husband and I seen at Chateau St Michelle. Beautiful venue and the weather was amazing that night . Have been wanting to see Diana Krall for many years and came down from BC to see her, . I thought her and the other musician sounded great but they were often hard to hear as people surrounding us chatted throughout the concert. Who does that? Even during the softer songs they talked. Then people left early causing more disruption. Why pay money to attend a concert, talk throughout it and then leave before it is done? Very annoying.

  • Good concert on a beautiful evening outdoors in Woodinville

by Zim on 7/13/23Rating: 4 out of 5

This was a two-fer! The opening duo John (Paynich) Pinetree and an amazing bass player (whose name escapes) from Seattle area were incredible. He often plays with a full band called "John Pinetree & the Yellin' Degenerates"that we'll watch for. Our first time hearing Diana Krall in concert: She performed with a bass player, drummer, and guitarist; that clearly knew each other well - seeming to effortlessly move through the mostly classic jazz/blues pieces they performed. Don't have the names of the other musicians names at hand, but the guitarist was a standout. Where we sat (general admission, lawn) Krall's piano often seemed oddly under-amplified for this outdoor concert. A concert on the Chateau St Michelle is a real pleasure on a nice day. But we would have loved to have heard this concert in an enclosed space; Not so many oblivious concert-goers that don't know enough to quiet down during softer pieces. The musicians were generous and responsive to the audience of 3-4000, returning for 2 encore numbers.

  • Not her best

by JimB on 7/12/23Rating: 2 out of 5

Love Diana. Saw her a few years ago - amazing. This was not her best. Low energy. Minimal delivery.

  • Musicians Were Amazing, Audience Was Awful

by OH on 7/12/23Rating: 3 out of 5

Diana Krall is truly amazing and I've wanted to see her act live for a long time. That she had Jeff Hamilton and John Clayton with her was an added treat - the whole band was inspiring. However, the audience all talked so loudly around us that we could barely hear the concert....I honestly don't understand why most of the audience was there because it surely wasn't to actually pay attention to the music. Also very frustrating that the venue would run no shuttles to the parking lot until the last song was over....we were trying to get a head start on a long drive home by leaving a song early and were unable to do so....instead sat on the stuffy shuttle and waited because we weren't informed of the rule ahead of time. Probably will not return to Chateau Ste Michelle as a venue.

  • Alright

by TLM on 7/12/23Rating: 3 out of 5

I thought it started late and it wasn’t her best performance or a lot of her great songs

  • Snore City

    by gorge-ous on 7/12/23Rating: 1 out of 5

Chateau Ste. Michelle was a very pretty venue. Thank God we bought a bottle of wine when we arrived, because they shut the bar down before the show even started! We were really excited to chill and listen to Diana Krall, we wanted to love it. Didn't expect to be lulled into a coma. It was painfully boring and we (along with many other audience members) left early. I wish I'd dropped $250 on a fabulous dinner instead.

  • Amazing Venue / Not Diana’s Best performance

by Jazz Singer on 7/12/23Rating: 2 out of 5

The venue Chateau St. Michelle could not have been more perfect. Diana is usually a force to be reckoned with but she was either fighting a cold or drunk??? She slurred most her words and never actually sang a complete song. Long band solos kept the music nice and entertaining but every single song seemed to be a few lyrics followed by 5 to 7 minutes of band solos then maybe a few more lyrics to end. As a big band vocalist myself- I was left wanting. The gentleman who opened for Diana was pretty awesome! Deep strong vocals, guitar and harmonica. I believe his group was called the Pinetree Music Collective. I’d go see him perform again! (But probably not Diana Krall).

  • Audience manners

by Pegkel on 7/12/23Rating: 4 out of 5

I thought the concert was good but the audience rudely started leaving WAY before the concert was over and completely distracted me from enjoying the music. I felt really bad for Diana Krall!

  • Great performance as always

by Tom on 7/12/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Ms. Krall and her three musicians were in fine form. Nearly every number was a standard, which is what I prefer. I know some like her original works, which are also nice. The venue (Chateau Ste. Michelle) is a pretty good venue, but shows its main weakness during quieter concerts like this. And that weakness is the rude behavior of a tiny fraction of the attendees who get drunk and loud and won't shut up.

  • Superlative Event

    by Mr.&Mrs. Dinger on 7/12/23Rating: 5 out of 5

There are a few disappointments about the venue now that it has a new owner: premium-price this and that, guess they need to get a quck return on investment. Seems to be the Live Nation way. Ignoring that, it could not have been a better evening. The weather was perfect, the crowd was well behaved, the opening act may have been the best opening act we've ever seen. We first saw Diana Krall at the Hollywood Bowl in about 2001 or so, and several times since at CSM. She never disappoints. The sour post script was a group of about 6 or 7 women sprawled on a blanket next to us, likely in their 60s save for what seemed to be the daughter of one who was maybe in her late 20s. They incessanty talked, sent each other text messages, and laughed during the opening set, ruining it for those around them. Finally one of the group behind us went over and quietly admonished them, beating us to doing so ourselves. It did reduce the volume, but for almost the entire rest of the concert they were glued to their phones and seemed to be texting each other. I wanted to invite them to come to our house, pay the lawn ticket price plus parking and buy wine, while texting each other and chatting. They obviously could care less about any performers. Looking forward to several more concerts this summer, next up Trombone Shorty and Ziggy Marley.

  • Mediocre

by Jon Ning Abo on 7/12/23Rating: 3 out of 5

The opening band was mediocre at best. Krall' performance was perfunctory. It seemed she really was going through the motions and didn't really want to be there at all.

  • Disappointed

by She was drunk on 7/12/23Rating: 2 out of 5

I was expecting a quality professional performance similar to her recordings but she was sloppy and had difficulty articulating is her speech. People were leaving early. I was among them. It was sad to see her like this. The other band members were excellent.

  • Masterful Performance

by JHT on 7/12/23Rating: 5 out of 5

It must be difficult for an intimate jazz artist to perform before a large outdoor summer crowd. Diana and her excellent players exceeded my expectations for this large outdoor venue. She brought the "big stuff"and the more intimate songs as well. She connected with us on both types of songs. It was a great show at a great summer venue!

  • Simply Marvelous

by Vieux on 7/12/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Saw Diana with her all star quartet consisting of John Clayton, Jeff Hamilton, and Anthony Wilson. These guys play on a different level-I was in heaven!

  • Disappointing

by Emerald City Jazz Fan on 7/12/23Rating: 2 out of 5

For years I have wanted to see Diana Krall. I wanted to hear her sing at least one of the songs she was famous for. She played for a very short time, less than most other artists and really didn't sing much. She highlighted her band that was fantastic and really was her saving grace. My look of love has unfortunately waned for her, and no longer looking her way.

  • Good music poorly behaved crowd

by Mark on 7/12/23Rating: 2 out of 5

Diana Krall was great, but the crowd misbehaved. People were talking, loudly, through her entire set. A group next to us even took a FaceTime call. The extra “rental chair” fenced area in the middle of the lawn was unnecessary, mostly empty and broke up the entire lawn seating. Don’t know that we’ll be rushing to attend a concert at this venue again, which is a shame, as it’s beautiful.

  • A disappointing evening

by stevec on 7/10/23Rating: 3 out of 5

First, the good news...her band was great. A very talented set of musicians. But Diana Krall herself? What a disappointment. Minimal audience engagement, slurring her words, not finishing sentences. We were sitting quite close and could barely hear her playing early on. Solos would end and she didn't pick up...leaving awkward gaps in the number. Things got a little better after about an hour, but not enough to hold us in our seats. We left early...something I almost never do. Concerts cost a lot these days and this one was a waste of my time and money.
