About

DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.

Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

  • Relaxing

by BMAVD on 7/17/23Rating: 3 out of 5

The Venue is new at Thunder Valley, and it is laid out very nice. No bad seat in the house. Diana Krall sang wonderfully, the band members were very talented. But she seemed very tired, so it got a little 'slow'. I know it is mood music. It was enjoyable, but I probably wouldn't go see her again.

  • Fabulous Concert

by Kodiak on 7/17/23Rating: 5 out of 5

We have been trying to see Diana Krall live for several years unsuccessfully, but this was a fantastic show. The credit belongs not only to Diana, her voice and musical talents, and her trio who were each outstanding musicians in their own rite. Credit also goes to the venue at Thunder Valley, a new facility with the best acoustics and sound equipment I’ve ever experienced. There couldn’t have been a better concert experience.

  • Love her music, disappointed in performance

by TL on 7/17/23Rating: 1 out of 5

My husband and I have been fans of Diana Krall's music for years and were so excited for this concert. She came on stage, sat down at her piano and started to play and sing with that beautiful voice of hers. She then continued from song to song with essentially zero audience engagement. I had hoped for maybe a story or two about how a song came to be, what it meant to her, or something - there was nothing. For a good portion of the concert she appeared to have her eyes closed as she was singing - so truly no audience engagement. The same was true for her guitarist who is an excellent musician however very much in his own world with his eyes closed just playing away. After 90 minutes I'm sad to say we actually left. The people behind us were asleep :( I'm just incredibly disappointed.

  • Diana Krall may need soom time off.

by JAKE on 7/17/23Rating: 2 out of 5

Venue was 4/5. Food selection was poor. diana krall performance 2/5. Muted expression was almost robot-like. Would not see her again. Her albums are much better to listen to.

  • Second concert

  • Left concert disappointed

by Lil net on 7/17/23Rating: 3 out of 5

I have been a very long time fan of Diana Krall. I went to the concert, so excited to see her again. I’ve seen her once before. I did not go to listen to her band the majority of the time, though they were excellent! I went to hear one of my favorite singer sing lmy favorite songs like a Peel Me a Grape, S’wonderful and Pick Yourself Up. Many of the songs that she sang were not any of my favorites. Diane, I didn’t sing very much. Such a let down. What a shame!!

  • Impeccable

by Nicvg on 7/17/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Every single musician on that stage was absolutely impeccable. Their talent is so pure that everything they play looks effortless and natural. Their musical chemistry is undeniable. One of the best shows I’ve ever seen… This is a must see!

  • The Venue is perfect for Diana Krall

by George in Roseville on 7/17/23Rating: 5 out of 5

All four members of the Diana Krall gang on stage were outstanding. Each musician was featured throughout the performances and the crowd was enthusiastic. Diana was terrific even as she suffered from allergies. Thunder Valleys new concert venue known as “The Venue” is well designed and has perfect sound quality. Seats are staggered so you don’t have to look around the person in front of you. So this is what a hundred million dollars looks like…excellent!

  • Truly Great Music

by Frank on 7/17/23Rating: 5 out of 5

The music was wonderful. The venue at thunder Valley is really a great place to see a show like this. Dianna was in great form. The band was wonderful. I just really loved the music If she comes again I will be there.

  • Diana was amazing, The Venue not so much.

by DK Fan on 7/17/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Diana Krall only gets better and better, and the quality of performance, the music she delivers, is of a kind that can only be had in a live setting. She is jazz magic, and along with her combo, make for a memorable and wonderful evening. On the other hand, The Venue at Thunder Mountain Casino makes choices that get in the way of fully enjoying the music. Apparently the casino comps concert tickets to gamblers, and when they come to the concert, many of them come in late and leave early. They talk loudly during the performance, use cell phones poorly, etc. This practice degrades the experience for those who paid handsomely for their seats. I'll be looking for more concerts from Diana, but I will not be looking to attend any events at TMC.

  • Very Mellow show

by Frustrated on 7/17/23Rating: 4 out of 5

Diana Karl seems very shy and humble. Sultry, smoky vibe to her music and performance. Back up musicians are awesome and blend perfectly. The Venue at Thunder Valley was a great play to hear her. Sort of a shock to head out into the casino and the traffic to go home after her mellow performance, but hearing her live was an incredible experience.

  • She was great

by Dave on 7/17/23Rating: 5 out of 5

She was great and a great band as well I would see her again when she comes back around this area Highly recommend!

  • A Nite of Great Jazz

by Chas on 7/17/23Rating: 5 out of 5

The quartet was amazing. Great performance by all. Wonderful to see and listen to her sing and play both standards and lesser knowns. Great venue, sure beats sitting outdoors as in the past. Will return for more next time.

  • Amazing as always

by Gregg on 7/17/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Diana delivered as she always does. The arrangements were off the charts, the band kicked, and Diana’s piano playing and vocals are unparalleled. You’ll see reviews from unsophisticated “fans” expecting to see a pop show with a bright and cheery songstress leading a top 40 festival, but this isn’t Krall. She’s the next evolution of Nat King Cole and if you’re into jazz torch it’s an experience like none other. The show featured new takes on stuff she released years ago and they were awesome. And she goes so low and quiet even a rowdy Sacramento audience had no choice but to shut the hell up for once and surrender their attention to a legendary talent. If you haven’t seen her, go.

  • Great concert but problematic venue

by PhilM on 7/17/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Diana Krall and her talented ensemble gave an excellent concert. I have seen her concerts since the late 90s and, if anything, she gets better over time. BUT, I wouldn't go to another concert at The Venue because of their smoking policy. While the actual concert hall doesn't allow smoking, you are routed to it via a smoke-filled casino rather than directly through its outside doors. And what's worse, if you want to eat or drink before the concert in the facility (there are no other closeby restaurants), the smoke permeates the bars & restaurants there. So if you don't like smoke, find another location to see these great concerts.

  • Best concert I ever saw! Band was great!!

by Dee on 7/17/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Great venue, well staffed, been waiting to see Diana Krall for years…she was gracious and brilliant! Great crowd who clearly knew the performer and her music.

  • Great evening

New venue I have never been there before. Just a great evening. Very relaxing. She is fabulous

  • A rewarding time spent

by Geo on 7/17/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Diana Krall with her three piece band provided a wonderful and polished performance. Just a superb evening. The "Venue"at Thunder Valley is an excellent place for live shows.

  • Diana Krall and her amazing band

by Jazz lover on 7/17/23Rating: 5 out of 5

What a performance. Diana Krall and her amazing band but on a great show. Venue was wonderful as well. Great sound, huge clear video screens to show close ups. I saw her at Hollywood Bowl over 20 years ago, she still puts on a great show.

  • Very Disappointing Concert

by TZOOM on 7/17/23Rating: 1 out of 5

Went to see Diana Krall at The Venue in Thunder Valley Casino. We left after the first hour. I’ve attended many concerts and this is the first time every song had a solo by the bass, guitar and drums. Diana, had zero energy and seemed to play with her eyes closed most of the time. It’s like she was heavily medicated or something. She made a few off the wall comments to the audience that had us all shaking our head. I love her music and had been looking forward to this concert for months. I’d like to think it was just an off night, but with the price of concert tickets I’ll stick to listening to her on Spotify.
