DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT
Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.
Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).
Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

It was so great to see her in person. The chemistry between the four of them was very evident.
I am a fan of at least 25 years but never seen her live. I was a little surprised when the show didn't start until 8:15 and the crowd was noisy. It wasn't obvious at the beginning but something wasn't right. She kept saying how happy she was to be there; she seemed to slur some words, started playing a song in the wrong key and hit notes flat then bended to tune: very lazy. Disappointed, but true to her history that I was not aware of. Look at past reviews.
A voice that’s pure smoke. One of he tightest bands I’ve ever heard. He Fox theater has incredible acoustics . Classic venue for a classy lady.
The songs were all good. Acoustics were great. The bass player was the best I had ever seen. The drummer was one of the best I had ever seen. Guitar playing and piano playing were excellent. Diana had some great singing. The downside was that she didn't sing any of her hits (Look of Love, California Dreamin', Walk on By, Summertime, Alone Again). Extremely disappointed in the song selection, otherwise it was a great concert.
Diana Krall is even more incredible in person than in her recordings. Her musicianship is amazing--subtle, skillful, and full of respect for the music she plays. Her voice is smoke and whiskey and life, expressive and versatile. Her band was incredible--each musician a virtuoso in his own right. There was not a shred of superstar or prima donna about her. She was so deferential to her fellow musicians-her excitement about playing with them was palpable, and infectious. And she was hilarious, self-deprecating, thoughtful. The venue was great. The Fox is big, but the show felt intimate, and special.
She is an amazing performer. The band was tight and professional. Fox Theatre is so Beautiful, however the seats in the balcony do not leave any leg room at all. Very hard for tall people to feel comfortable. It was a hot day and up there in the balcony it felt like the air conditioning wasn't even on. Not pleasant. But the show was worth it.
This was a disappointing and somewhat boring show. The set list included very few familiar songs, and the evening featured far more instrumentals and band solos than vocals. A talented band, to be sure, but we paid to hear Diana Krall. Something seemed very off.
It was so good! Thank you so much! I have a wonderful memories!
Loved the entire show! Would have given her 5 stars, but my only disappointment is ... SHE DIDN'T SING PEEL ME A GRAPE.
First off, the Fox Theater in Oakland is a treasure. Beautiful venue. So glad it has been preserved. But that's where the positives end. I was so looking forward to this show, even though I knew my seats weren't the best- Row DD- Second to last orchestra row, right in front of a curtain which masked (ha!) the main bar. Throughout the concert, we could hear people ordering drinks, drinks being made (shaken), and general noise. And the seats themselves were hi-top seats where your feet do not touch the ground, therefore the edge of the seat cut into my thighs most of the evening. So uncomfortable. But then there was Diana Krall herself. Had she taken a sleepy time gummy? Was she ill? Her set was sleepy and uninspired, with her hair covering her face (what I could see anyway with some very large people sitting right in front of me...) It was difficult to hear the piano at times (was it the sound? was it our seats?) and her band really had to carry her. They were GREAT! But I didn't come to see them so.... I've read other reviews claiming that Diana doesn't engage her audience very well, etc etc- I just wish I'd read the reviews prior to attending. She might be better to see at a jazz festival- This one was definitely not worth the price of the seats.
She put on a very. nice show supported by very talented musicians. Huge fan and have not seen her since about 7 years ago at Davies Hall in San Francisco. It WOULD have been nice if she acknowledged Oakland..but hey The venue was wonderful. Loved it, first time at the Fox Oakland. Clean, good staff, good legroom and no big lines at the bar! We will be back!
After waiting a very long time to see her they could of done less improv. Oh well I saw and I went. Way too much money. Sorry Diana. Maybe some time in the future I won’t be so disappointed.
I’ll keep it short. The band came on jamming, then she sang a bit. No stage presence. An unclear comment, ‘oh, you know what I mean’. Her job to entertain. Her performance unremarkable. I’ve never left s concert early. We left at 9:15 after
Loved the concert! Diana Krall and her band were absolutely the best! They were all on top of their game...can't wait to see her again!! The venue was really an excellent one for a jazz concert...great sound system...stage well placed...would see another concert there!
I booked these tickets because we enjoyed Diana Krall on YouTube singing with some guys my husband follows BUT I had no idea she was so much more than a singer. She’s an amazing jazz pianist with a supportive and loving repertoire with her band, who were so talented. We had an amazing experience. And such a great venue #ThunderValley
Orchestration featuring the band was excessive. Diana’s vocals were not featured, but over embellished by the instrumentals. Program needs to be restructured. Lighting was esthetic, and the theatre well designed.
Diana & her quartet were excellent in their performance. ;-))
Diana Krall did not disappoint. Loved the concert..
This concert rocked! Diana is so talented and unique in her musical intrepretation...a very special evening. Wish it had gone a little longer and she had sang a few more songs. Her accompanying musicians very talented also. John Clayton in particular was amazing on bass. Definately a concert to remember and treasure for a long time!
The show was great, the venue comfortable but ingress and egress was annoying.
