About

DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.

Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

  • Not the same show

by SocalMusic on 7/25/23Rating: 3 out of 5

I saw Diana ~20 years ago at Humphrey's. It was magical. She was vibrant, the music filled the air as the sun set behind Cabrillo. That was what I was expecting when I bought tickets for my husband this year, but it was not the same. Dull, I think is the best way to describe it. We stayed for 5 songs, all were slow. Lots of instrumental runs. The talent was clearly there - those artists can perform in their sleep. Music was not very loud and it felt flat. When she spoke...I'm going to say it....she sounded medicated/drunk/high. At one point, she thought someone else was going to lead the song and they told her she was supposed to. I absolutely get that the world lost someone she was close to, but please cancel the show if you're not up for it. Maybe she's just tired of touring, I don't know. In any case, we left in the 6th song at my husband's request and I gladly acquiesced. Disappointing.

  • Weird stage presence

by Algongquin on 7/25/23Rating: 3 out of 5

Humphreys is an acquired taste I guess. Packed in on really uncomfortable folding chairs makes for a long evening. Diana’s performance was as usual “Different” but not unexpected. Her song selection was somewhat random in an attempt to honor her close friend/mentor Tony Bennet so we weren’t treated to her music we expected. Not bad just not what we hoped for and somewhat expected I guess. The three gents that perform with her are all STUPENDOUS making for an enjoyable musical experience. In spite of all of this we wouldn’t miss a performance remotely close if at all possible!

  • Wonderful music, uncomfortable venue

by Richard on 7/25/23Rating: 3 out of 5

Diana Kroll is one of the best jazz singers of our time and she did not disappoint. Her sultry voice along with arrangements and her outstanding fellow musicians were marvelous. Unfortunately, the outdoor venue (Humphries By The Bay) made for a lot of noise by the venue staff and many of those in attendance who treated the concert like they were at a ball game which was very disrespectful to the artist and those who came to listen to her music. Overall, while I really enjoy her artistry, I will not be returning to any similar type of concert at this particular venue.

  • So sad

by San Diegan on 7/25/23Rating: 2 out of 5

Just like many of the other reviews, her performance at Humphreys in San Diego was lackluster. It was mostly a jazz improv evening, which was wonderful, but not what the audience was expecting. She seemed out of it throughout most of the evening. She said she was sad that her friend Tony Bennett had passed, and the audience was very forgiving based on that. But, looking at other reviews from the last few years, it’s clear that she’s in trouble. Don’t know if she’s got a substance abuse problem, suffers from depression, or has some cognitive issues. She forgot song lyrics, lost her place a few times, and seemed almost incoherent when she spoke. That said, I remain a big fan, and hope she gets the help she needs.

  • So Very Sad to Say...

by Cyrano on 7/25/23Rating: 1 out of 5

Like most of the crowd I am a big fan of this extraordinary artist who is not only a wonderful vocalist whose trademark torch song treatments of American songbook material are entrancing, but a world class jazz pianist. After the very sad display Saturday night, I googled reviews from recent years, even pre pandemic and found similar themes. A disconnected and at times confused performer sometimes forgetting lyrics or staring into space. Putting aside the fact that being a true jazz player who gets bored with re recitation of old material and thus enjoys extended solos by her band mates in favor of music more accessible to her audience, this was on another level. One shouldn't conjecture too much in these instances but as a friend said to me the next day, "do you think she was high?"This seems the most likely explanation. And I don't mean just a bit buzzed with whatever drug she prefers, but zoned out to the point of loss of her talent and professionalism. I write this in sorrow really, but someone close to her needs to intervene or she will lose more than her working life.

  • Worst Seating Ever!

by Antonio on 7/25/23Rating: 1 out of 5

I will never again see a show at Humphrey's because of how uncomfortable the seating is. We saw Diana Krall on 7/22/23 and she was incredible as always. However, the seats were unbearable. Hard cheap small plastic chairs zip tied together so they can't be moved. Inhumane to seat people this way, especially when they charge the prices they do so see a show. They don't get it. It's all about the experience. The setting was beautiful with the moon over the harbor, beautiful trees surrounding the venue, the stage, lighting and sound was amazing, and they ruined the whole experience trying to pack as many people in as possible with unbearable seating. No matter who is playing there, and how much I would like to see them, I will never see another show at this venue.

  • Great Singer; Terrible Venue

by Kyincali on 7/25/23Rating: 3 out of 5

I wanted to love this concert so much but it fell short for many reasons. The first and foremost - Diana Krall is an amazing singer, but she is not a performer! She barely spoke to the audience and played extremely mellow songs, most of which I had never heard before. I was looking forward to some of her classics but only heard one or two. The second issue was the venue - Humphreys had plastic chairs so close together that it was stifling! I was so close to the (stranger) man beside me, it was almost embarrassing! To add to the discomfort, they zip tied the chairs together so that you couldn't even move them an inch or so apart to give a little space. I'm a fairly small person and I was completely squashed, so I can imagine how larger/taller folks would fair! We will not be back for concerts at this venue. I thought they packed us in at the Shell, but compared to Humphreys, the Shell is expansive!

  • Stoned?

    by Mike M. on 7/25/23Rating: 1 out of 5

She was definitely impaired: didn’t know who was supposed to start tunes, forgot lyrics, sat back and watched bandmates solo for half the show. Made illogical banter with individuals in the audience. I’m done with one of my previous favorite musicians.

  • Loved it!

by Drummin Man on 7/25/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Tremendous show. Diana was amazing, the rest of the band was tight and incredible. A great groove and incredible musicianship. The venue was great as well. Temps were perfect but the seating is a little cramped.

  • Music a Plus-Venue a Minus

by Bassman on 7/25/23Rating: 4 out of 5

The music was first rate, the venue was tight and uncomfortable. The sound quality was poor through the first 20 minutes of the concert and then improved. Borderline rude behavior by some of the patrons took away from the experience. We are not going back th Humphrey's Concerts By The Bay.

  • Super Mediocre

    by NY_Genie on 7/24/23Rating: 2 out of 5

Saw Diana Krall in Phoenix (Mesa) and was very disappointed. The concert was lazy, lacked energy, and engagement. Diana barely sang. She fumbled when looking through noted and talked incoherently. Performance lasted for less than 90 minutes even though the concert was advertised for 100+ minutes. People were leaving half way through. Maybe other performances be better, but the one we attended was a waste of time and money.

  • Nice evening

by Ren on 7/23/23Rating: 4 out of 5

Would have liked more vocals and less music. Also was looking for more of her classic songs. Didn’t like the high seats with no place to put drinks or rest feet on front of you.

  • Diana has been on My bucket list since the early '90s

by PUNKIN on 7/22/23Rating: 5 out of 5

When I saw that Diana was going to be at the Thunder Valley Resort- Venue I immediately bought tickets and was really lucky. Choose seats and the Venue is Beautiful and the Sound is out of this world. I really left with the feeling of finally at a wish come true.

  • Good not great

by JP on 7/19/23Rating: 4 out of 5

We were in section cc at a cost of 250 plus dollars for 2 tickets. The chairs had no arm rest and were up so high that your feet could not touch the floor. There was no leaning back like in a regular theatre so it was not very comfortable. The concert started 25 minutes after the stated start time. Diana Krall was great but seemed to be pacing herself quite a bit. There were way too many long solos from the other artists throughout the whole show. I looked it up and I guess she was recovering from bad pneumonia ,so that explained it. Diana Krall is a talented singer and a precious human being, and very appreciative that she could be there, so in the end that made up for the other issues

  • always a great show

by jjacks on 7/19/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Every tour is a unique collection of songs. Not always what she had done in her latest album. This was Her and her most extended collaborating bandmates. She did a collection of jazz standards and pop\rock songs in her voice and style. It was nice to hear a quiet jazz club performance with all the players doing great solos, like only really talented, seasoned players do. A memorable evening. long time a fan.

  • She did not feel like singing

by Robert on 7/19/23Rating: 2 out of 5

Seemed more like a jam session for musicians that a concert where the artist performed much more than playing the piano. Very disappointing do not waster your money listen to her music on the radio.

  • Lackluster

by Cece on 7/19/23Rating: 3 out of 5

The venue was good. The sound was good. Performer though mainly played the piano and highlighted the band more (drummer, guitarist and cellist) rather than do any singing. Pretty disappointing to hear her sing only 25% of the time with the rest just listening to the band play. Don't think I'll go to anymore of her concerts due to this.

  • A Magical Evening

by Exclusive Style on 7/19/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Diana Krall is amazing!, Classy, beautiful, her band is master class of musicians. My second time seeing her and I will definitely go again any time she is in my area. Run don’t walk to buy tickets to see her and her amazing band.

  • Best Ensemble

by RobRem on 7/19/23Rating: 5 out of 5

In past concerts, I mostly enjoyed Diana’s sultry voice, catchy lyrics, charming stories, and a pop-jazz angle to her delivery. With Anthony Wilson (guitar), John Clayton (bass), and Jeff Hamilton (drums), this was the tightest quartet I’ve seen onstage in years. Seriously good jazz.

  • Diana Krall hits it

by Roidal Rage on 7/19/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Diana Kralls band was outstanding. The set was a smoky lounge-perfect for a tight jazz quartet. This band has been together for decades and it really shows. Krall is so much more than such a jazz singer. Really enjoyed it.
