About

DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.

Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

  • Very disappoinkted

by Joan on 8/2/23Rating: 2 out of 5

I feel that something was wrong with her during this concert. She was slurring her words when she spoke. Some of the things she said did not make sense. She let her backup guitarist and drummer play for over 50% of the concert. She hardly played any piano. At the end of the concert her head was bent way over the piano so that her hair obstructed her face. Her encore song was a bizarre song about Tony Bennet and I could hardly understand the words. Not the Diana Krall we saw years ago where the concert was lively and upbeat. Not this one

  • The Stars Fall for Diana Krall!

by Dot On The Spot on 8/2/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Overall: How good was the Diana Krall concert at the Orpheum Theater in Madison? Hmm...Spontaneous applause attended every vocal, every instrumental solo, whoops of approval ringing out - white hot, totally tight group dynamics - that VOICE and Diana's unique style of supporting the group with her pianistic prowess... Each person in the ensemble was a virtuoso when it came to their own unique contributions. Well - I think there's enough superlatives above to give you an idea - - first rate, through and through! Five stars, and totally worthy of 'em all!

  • Excellent performance - could be better if

by openair on 8/2/23Rating: 3 out of 5

Diana and the crew delivered an excellent concert, professional and talented as expected... great music, exquisitely delivered- it might have been more enjoyable if the audio board would pump up the volume on her mic when she talks or "chats"with the first three rows - Back in row "Q"it didn't carry very well, so all we heard was low level mumbling followed by appreciative chuckles or light applause from the highest priced seats that sold out too fast to buy them online... also never saw a merch stand - though we likely wouldn't want a t-shirt or temporary tattoo but maybe a great signed poster, lp, cd (yeah), o signed set list? did see three good looking motorcoaches parked near-by...ready for a quick postshow getaway off to the "...next show in a row..."(as Jackson Browne might say...) probably not likely, but would like to enjoy her (their) work in a nightclub setting

  • Love Diana, perhaps not this concert

by MadisonGal on 8/2/23Rating: 3 out of 5

Beautiful venue in Madison's Orpheum. Diana came on a bit late and seemed scattered with her conversation and set list. She played just shy of an hour and only one encore song, leaving the audience wondering what happened.

  • Too short. Too improv. Few standards

by Bill on 8/2/23Rating: 3 out of 5

She’s dynamite however a better mix of improv and classics would have been more appealing. And one hour twenty five including encore - not enough. Even 15 more minutes …

  • Great performance and venue

by JB on 8/2/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Awesome performance in a great venue... the Orpheum was the perfect hall for Diana Krall and her incredible musicians.

  • Diana never disappoints

by MartyMac on 8/1/23Rating: 5 out of 5

In an age of Marshall Stax turned up to 11, it is refreshing to listen to each instrument in many combinations to provide elegant music. The musicians treat their instruments as such and produce an amazing blend of standards and original pieces. No wonder her group sells out so quickly.

  • Enjoyed every second.

by RP on 8/1/23Rating: 5 out of 5

I have enjoyed every second of this concert! Diana Krall is one of my favorite singer. Amazing event!

  • very disappointing!!

by Hildy on 8/1/23Rating: 1 out of 5

Went to hear Diana Krall sing and what we got was, maybe, a total of 10 minutes of singing and over a hour of instruments playing. Not what we went for and I would say Not what most people expected. No intermission or we would have left at a break. If you bill for an evening with Diana Krall you expect to hear her sing. Not hear a sentence or two and then hear her drummer, and or guitarist for 15 minutes. Most disappointing to say the least. Would never go again! And to make it worse, lots of time you couldn't hear her words and we were in Row N. Lousy!

  • Concert not what I expected.

by Steve on 8/1/23Rating: 3 out of 5

First time attending. She started 10 minutes late. Concert was only about 1 1/2 hours with encore. Half of the concert was her featuring the guitarist, bass and drummer and her not singing. It was much like a jam session. We came to hear her sing, and her special songs, which she sang only a few. Disappointed over all.

  • OK but.

by Jim on 8/1/23Rating: 3 out of 5

Audio issue. Microphone not picking up Diana’s voice. Visual issue. No large screens to help those who are not in the front row. Security ridiculously tight. I had to throw away my coffee that I purchased at Humphreys restaurant because outside drinks were not allowed. But the same coffee can be bought inside the Humphreys concert venue. Seats are too close together.

  • Too slow and sleepy

by Fan on 7/30/23Rating: 2 out of 5

I have been a fan for over 30 years but this concert was too slow-tempo was dragged out, and just lacked the lively keyboard solos of years gone by. Diana and her band are all amazing musicians, but I was hoping for a few more numbers with more energy. Just simply too sleepy.

  • Always Delivers

by Goodnick on 7/30/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Always enjoy Diana Krall. Have to say that while the venue location is ideal (walking distance from my hotel and outdoors by the water), the seating is very cramped and uncomfortable. I would still attend a concert here but try to make sure you have an aisle seat. Would always suffer to see Diana Krall.

  • Off Her Game

by Diana Fan on 7/30/23Rating: 3 out of 5

As big Diana fans, we were very disappointed in her performance in Oakland on 7/13. She seemed disoriented, relied heavily on her backup performers to carry each song, sang very little and couldn’t remember where she was.

  • CROAKING SOUNDS NOT SINGING

by Cyn on 7/27/23Rating: 1 out of 5

Ms. Krall vocally was in poor form I've never heard her sound this "off"before in any of the 5 concerts of hers ive paid for. Too long of solos too. Never have i ever seen her so careless, forgetting words to her songs. Appeared as if she wanted to be elsewhere. I was extremely disappointed... Took a guest, her 1st time seeing Ms. Krall. So disappointed. She should have canceled as it appears she was not her normal professional artist.

  • Bad venue for her

by Disappointed on 7/26/23Rating: 3 out of 5

We were so looking forward to her & her trio but Humphrey’s is a terrible venue. The sound was good but the seats were very uncomfortable. The musicians were outstanding but they belong in a more intimate setting. We were expecting a “greatest hits” but didn’t get it. This was a jazz club experience featuring extensive riffs by all the musicians. They’re great but they went on & on leaving minimal vocals. We left early because the chairs made my back hurt.

  • Diana Krall

by NancyJo on 7/25/23Rating: 1 out of 5

I sincerely wished I would be giving a rave review of the concert, but I can’t. I am a big fan and this was my 3rd time seeing Diana Krall in concert. This was not a good performance. She seemed quite out of sorts when speaking to the audience. Her feelings regarding the recent loss of Tony Bennett were heartfelt. But she isn’t have it together. She even lost her place during a couple of songs. I love to go to Humphreys to see concerts but this one was very disappointing.

  • "DISAPPOINTMENT"!

by Hans on 7/25/23Rating: 1 out of 5

We invited our adult children and we all had expectations of a great evening, however, that did not happen! what a disappointment Diana Krall's entire performance was. There was no energy whatsoever, She didn't get up from her seat once, and barely even communicated with the audience except to say how sad she was about Tony Bennett, which was fine, but that was the feeling throughout the entire evening! i'm afraid Diana Krall should stick to recordings and not "live"performances because there is no "life"to seeing her perform! We left early as did many others, what a waste of a lot of money, and an evening, which we can never get back again!

  • A low energy concert

by Zeek on 7/25/23Rating: 3 out of 5

My tickets said Row 1 but we were seated in section D which is too far away ro really enjoy this type of artist. She really seemed bummed out by the death of Tony Bennet.
