DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.

Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

Diana and her trio were fantastic! I wish she would have played longer, I'm talking for hours!! I will definitely be there again when she comes back to Dayton!

  • Diana's jazz is top notch.

Diana Krall's music is unmatched. It's so hard to find this kind of music in the Dayton area. The Fraze is an awesome venue - just wish prices were more affordable.

  • Not a Great Night

by jankolantern on 7/9/09Fraze Pavilion - KetteringRating: 3 out of 5

I've never seen Diana Krall live before, but I have listened intently to her music for the past 5 years or so, and she is #1 on my list as a living jazz artist that I love. I left the concert a little disappointed and I think there were several contributing factors that I interpreted from her comments on stage. They weren't used to playing outside and there were way too many people floating in late with their drinks in hand when she was used to having a seated and focused audience. Several times the group got lost from one another during the concert and I really think; as a professional, she should have showcased more of her new cd, which is what I expected to hear. I also think she was kind of "working her voice" rather than just singing and letting her voice work its own magic. It was nice to see John Hamilton and Anthony Williams in person and hear them play the phrases and licks I've become accustomed to from listening to their cds. I still love Diana, but I think she was tired that night and kind of lonely for her home and husband and it affected her concert. I did not leave the Pavilion wanting to buy her new cd.

  • A night with Diana

the weather was perfect, the sound system was excellent, the base player was amazing, and Diana was sultry

  • Diana Krall, sheer class!

    by BigRed01 on 7/9/09Fraze Pavilion - KetteringRating: 5 out of 5

What a delightful evening at Fraze Pavilion in Dayton. We have enjoyed and followed Krall for over 15 years and, as a fine wine, she simply gets better with time. The "Quiet Nights" tour was a blend of her newer music with some wonderful older standards salted in to make the evening a delight. She is more at ease (greater showmanship) in front of an audience than a decade ago; she is comfortable with herself, her music and with you the audience. It all comes together for a warm, confortable experience with Diana Krall leading us through musical selections from all decades sprinkled with some personal anecdotes which makes this a not to be missed concert by one of North America's great Jazz talents.

Fraze Pavilion is the perfect intimate setting for the seductive Diana Krall. • Diana Krall must be heard!

    by Ree1 on 7/9/09Fraze Pavilion - KetteringRating: 5 out of 5

Her mastery is incredible, although stride-playing is not her forte. The delicacy of technique and that smoky voice! Go, go GO see her!

  • Sound was great!!

OK, so I'm a Krall nut. I had outstanding seats for the perfomance and they really paid off. She sang great, lots of songs I had never heard her do before and she and her group played their asses off. Loved it!!

  • Diana Krall is amazing!

by JAZZLOVER on 7/9/09Fraze Pavilion - KetteringRating: 5 out of 5

Diana Krall was wonderful at theFraze. She is very real and told some great personal stories and talked about the music that inspired her. Her backup musicians were just as skilled as she was and they played well together, even off of each other. A lot of great music and singing, she put on a great show!

Diana was incredible. Her voice was at her best, even better live. Her hands flew over the keys! Drummer, base amd guitar playes were outstanding. It was a perfect evening and setting. Diana, you made a perfect Fathers Day gift for my Dad and I Hope she returns back to Ohio again soon.

  • Kind of a Yawner

by musenthus on 7/9/09Fraze Pavilion - KetteringRating: 3 out of 5

I was a little disappointed in Diana at this concert. I missed the soul-jazz voice that I am accustom to. She had some funny lines though, maybe she should do stand up comedy on the side. Her band was terrific, think she knows that as she introduced each one numerous times.

  • Diana is a must see!

by Rlcrawfo on 7/8/09Fraze Pavilion - KetteringRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first time to Fraze Pavilion and I was extremely impressed. Diana Krall was amazing and the venue was very intimate...I felt like I was at a private concert with my family. It was unforgettable. I would highly recommend seeing Diana Krall, and I would love to visit Fraze Pavilion again for any other show. All seating was great, people were friendly, the evening was perfect...I couldn't have asked for a better show. If I could have changed one thing, it would have been for Diana to put on a longer concert!

  • Diana Krall was excellent, and so very talented.

by lbmj on 7/8/09Fraze Pavilion - KetteringRating: 5 out of 5

I didn't realize she was such a talented piano player. She is really quite skillful and versatile. Her fingers just seemed to magically glide across the keys and the most beautiful music would float out. She was amazing. Her band members were also quite talented and they made the perfect accompanyment to her keyboards. Her voice has this melodic, smoky quality that is equally mesmorizing and soothing. She really seemed to have a great personality; she was open and fun. As a band, they worked well together and really appeared to appreciate and relish each other's individual talents. All in all, I thought it was a great show. They played many of the favorites and classics, so we were quite satisfied with length and content.

  • An evening of magic

by Shelton on 7/8/09Fraze Pavilion - KetteringRating: 5 out of 5

The weather was perfect, the venue amazing. Ms. Krall came on stage in a tasteful black dress and the evening began. Performing standards as well as up tempo jazz tunes the full rich voice filled the air of Kettering Ohio. Backed by a standing bass, acoustic guitar, and drummer Ms. Krall not only displayed amazing talent but incredible keyboard virtuosity to the delight of all in attendance. It truly was an evening of magic.
