DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.

Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

  • Diana Krall was fabulous

by silverfox70 on 7/14/09STANLEY CENTER FOR THE ARTS - UticaRating: 5 out of 5

Diana Krall was more than I hoped for. She is a musical genius. She was warm and affable. The only thing I did not like was her backup players who some times drowned out her playing.

  • Diana's got what it takes!

by PJSNY on 7/14/09STANLEY CENTER FOR THE ARTS - UticaRating: 5 out of 5

Diana and her long time back up group were tight. We were able to enjoy renditions of some of our favorite songs where Diana and her group could improvise and solo. Not only was the performance great but Diana was personable and talked to the audience.

  • laid back evening of great tunes

by blairf27 on 7/14/09STANLEY CENTER FOR THE ARTS - UticaRating: 4 out of 5

diana was a real trooper. even tho' she was suffering from a nasty cold, she gave it her all. her backup band was amazingly tight. my only critique was that the guitarist overplayed his leads. not that they weren't spot on, he just needed to play more selectively. overall, a great night, even with the low energy of miss krall.

  • Diana was not feeling well

by dadanator on 7/14/09STANLEY CENTER FOR THE ARTS - UticaRating: 2 out of 5

Unfortunately, Diana was getting over the flu and was not feeling well. I did not notice any off key in the performance but she did not seem to have much bravado working for her this night. Maybe some day she will return. It was not fulfilling to me as I was sitting in the front row and my expectations were high given my fondness for this genre of jazz. I hope she is feeling better now. The band was great and well talented with Diana's guitarist shining through on many solos.

  • More Sultry Than Usual

by HisBlueEyes on 7/14/09STANLEY CENTER FOR THE ARTS - UticaRating: 5 out of 5

She was recovering from the flu when she did this concert. We had second row seats in the pit--I was stoked. When she first came out she was very quiet then explained to us that she hadn't been feeling well. Then she started interacting with the audience, telling stories of her singing, her older relatives and her boys. It gave the concert a very personal touch and I just loved the way she shared with us. Her singing and her piano playing were awesome and it was well worth the cost of the seats to be that close. I would go again and would recommend her music to all.

Diana Krall certainly delivers in concert - she is without a doubt a gifted vocalist and pianist, and a delightful entertainer! Her take on jazz is fresh and vibrant. I absolutely recommend her music and concerts!

  • Classy, talented, unforgettable

by ChathamDog on 7/13/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

I have been a long-time Krall fan, even before her acclaimed "When I Look Into Your Eyes." Over the years, I have seen her grow more personal with her music and then return to her roots in the jazz realm but with more soul and personality. More recently there is nothing standard about her treatment of the old jazz standards. They are up-to-date, more personal, and musically-driven than historic jazz figures. The concert was no different. Some songs were similar to their album versions. Many others took liberties, especially during the solo riffs. Wilson, Hearst, and Hamilton brought their own magic, allowing Diana to shine and showing their skills during the many solos. Some of the best moments were when these riffs also took off to combine other songs and even other styles at times. I heard elements of gospel-like style in the chords and phrasing several times. The audience loved it; at one point, Diana stopped stay, "I can't get down like this in Vancouver." I truly felt the performance was unique to the feedback from her Atlanta fans and the magic of that wonderful evening that passed oh, so quickly.

  • Diana is Fanatastic

by Butch69 on 7/13/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

The Diana Krall concert was everything I hoped it wpould be and more! The orchestra was exceptional and her voice was as good live as it was in the recording studio. I don't go to many concerts, only ones I believe would be top notch and I was NOT disappointed. I would see her again, she is a songbird extrodinare!

  • Diana was disappointing

by BelleT on 7/13/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - AtlantaRating: 2 out of 5

I was very disappointed that she was 20 minutes late starting and only played for and hour and a half. She is an unbelievable artist, but the concert was too short.

  • Entralled with Krall

by cutiger on 7/13/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

A consummate professional, Diana Krall blends her sultry vocals with deft keyboard phrasing to superb accompaniment from bass, drum, and guitar. With the addition of the Georgia Symphonic Pops Orchestra, this was a very special evening for any jazz enthusiast.

  • Dissapointed

by JimMjr on 7/13/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - AtlantaRating: 1 out of 5

I was very dissapointed in the concert. There was too much time spent with the band doing solo rifs and not enough of her singing.

  • Diana Krall is the best!

  • Diana Krall was forgettable...

by gagator on 7/13/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - AtlantaRating: 2 out of 5

$95/seat, long way from the stage, but still hoping to hear some great singing. Instead heard more solos from the guitar, bass and drum than anything else. Love her music...hated the concert. Save your money and buy the CDs.

  • krall was all

Her voice, her piano, her band, the orchestra - and then at Chastain? What could be more perfect!

  • Diana Krall - Super

by BDTiger on 7/12/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Evening with Diana Krall at Chastain with a couple bottles of wine, some good food, and my good looking girl beside me........ best nite of my summer. Heard Diana in Fort Worth a couple of years ago - this concert was even better. Amazing all over.

  • Unforgettable

Amazing performer on her cds, but even better live. Could not have asked for a better concert.

  • Diana Krall

by drsirna on 7/12/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - AtlantaRating: 1 out of 5

At first we thought she was stoned but the biggest complaint is that the music she played put me to sleep and was for people over the age of 70! She is amazing but her music was for a night club not Chastain Park. I heard the crickets more. She also showed up 30 minutes late. No way worth a $100 per ticket!

  • Diana Krall: A Great Concert Experience

by bajeha on 7/12/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Diana Krall’s Quiet Nights tour played Atlanta's outdoor Chastain Amphitheater on a very warm summer evening. This cozy bowl-shaped venue allows patrons to bring in food, beverages and small tables, many of which sport small candles lit at dusk. The effect is that of an outdoor night club, the perfect setting for listening to sophisticated classic jazz. The Krall quartet was backed up on some numbers with lush and tasty arrangements played by the Georgia Symphony Pops Orchestra, lead by her longtime conductor, Alan Broadbent. All were a delight to the ear, but the solo turns of Ms. Krall's veteran sidemen -- guitarist Anthony Wilson, bassist (and Atlanta native) John Clayton, and drummer Jeff Hamilton – were wonderfully innovative and warmly received. Ms. Krall herself was the total package, a real pro. Sure, she’s hot-looking (loved the sky-high red stilettos!) but what quickly replaces that superficial first impression is the realization that she actually is a supremely gifted jazz pianist and mature vocal artist. On this night she worked hard at putting her deeply felt personal stamp on each number. She still managed to be disarmingly personable in her remarks to the audience – anecdotes about life on tour with her toddler-aged twin boys brought much laughter -- and generous about acknowledging and supporting her fellow musicians, composers and arrangers. Ms. Krall performed without an opening act or intermission, which I think deepened the impact of her music and made it more memorable. The set list ranged from early-career cover hits of songs made famous by her musical idol, Nat King Cole, to romantic Brazilian-flavored selections from her current album. I don't know the name of the funky blues solo the Canadian-born musician played near the end of the show, but I do know that it was a hit with a Southern audience that knows when it hears the real deal. Should you see Diana Krall in person? Well, consider this: The woman who sat next to me didn't have a clue about who she was when the show started, but she’d become a big fan before it ended. You decide.

  • Diana Krall at Chastain Park - magical

by malbarda on 7/12/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre ASO - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

It was my Valerie's birthday, so when I heard a radio ad for Diana Krall's concert at Atlanta's Chastain Park on the exact date of her birthday I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I booked ourselves some table seats, bought way to much food and drink, packed candles and other dinner essentials, and off we went. For those that do not know Chastain Park as a concert venue, it is an outdoor amphitheatre with different types of seating, from the truly expensive front-and-center dinner tables, to a way-at-the-back park space (where you can picknic on the grass). I had seen Diana Krall live before, back when I was living in Japan in 2001, and she was amazing. More edgy then on her CD's with more pure jazz and boogie woogie elements thrown in. Last night's performance showed those same elements but a little more 'showmanship' thrown in. Her little talks in between some of the songs showed some really funny, quirky humor (she talked about her family life, touring with her 2 year old twins on a bus, and being impressed about meeting a certain mr. and mrs. Obama who were equally impressed when she told them she was married to Elvis Costello). Add the fact that she was backed not only by her trio of drum, guitar and bass, but also by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and you can imagine the lush performances that matched or rivaled her CD's. It was a truly magical night.
