About

DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.

Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

  • Absolutely Diana!!!!!

by furlling on 7/15/09nTelos Wireless Pavilion - PortsmouthRating: 5 out of 5

Diana Krall puts on a fantastic show. Her voice is unflappable in her variety of songs old to new. Kudos for her direct interaction and conversation with the crowd. My experience was more of one in a coffee shop than an amplitheatre.

  • Diana Krall was everything I'd hoped

by RichmondFrank on 7/15/09nTelos Wireless Pavilion - PortsmouthRating: 4 out of 5

Only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is the opening act--Brazilian duo--played too long, and there was too long a wait for Ms. K. But once she started--divine!

  • Great Diana Krall Show

Great show, even though she had a cold. Perfect venue for her, and the weather couldn't be better.

  • Diana Krall @ the Meyerhoff was awesome!

by Laurensail on 7/15/09Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - BaltimoreRating: 5 out of 5

what a wonderful evening at the Meyehoff in Baltimore Maryland listening to Diana Krall. I felt as though I was in her living room sitting back and relaxing drinking champagne, she was so candid, funny and real. She has such an incredible voice I enjoyed the concert so much I was disappointed when it was over. I have loved her music from the first time I saw her on DVD of her performance in Paris. I have numerous CD's of her music and now enjoy listening to her on my ipod. I look forward to the next time she is in or close to Maryland.

  • Nice!!

I took my mother to this concert as part of her mothers day gift (even though the concert fell on fathers day:) She is a huge Diana Krall fan and we were both totally impressed by her performance. She sounded great!!!! She said that she had a cold, but she didn't let that stop her from giving an excellent performance. I will definitely attend if/when she returns to the area.

  • Diana Krall, simply excellent

by gawilson on 7/15/09nTelos Wireless Pavilion - PortsmouthRating: 5 out of 5

From her older jazz standards to the newer cuts off her latest album to incredible instrumental passages, DIana Krall was great. We had great seats and we got them at the last minute. Her band was just too much to describe: professional, tasteful, and superb.

  • Good Music, so-so venue

by crtuttle on 7/15/09Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - BaltimoreRating: 4 out of 5

Overall the concert was good and I give Diana kudos for being a trooper. She seemed tired and stated a couple of times that she was fighting a cold, but she came on and performed a great show even though I'm sure she would have preferred to be home in bed with a hot cup of tea. The venue didn't have the greatest sound quality for this more intimate performance. Next time they should book the Strathmore--it's still a large concert hall but with much better acoustics and sound quality, even for the lesser amplified, smaller performances such as Diana Krall and her colleague musicians. Overall, though, I very much enjoyed the show.

  • Wow!

    by Sweetwilliam1 on 7/15/09Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - BaltimoreRating: 5 out of 5

My wife and me have both made our careers as classical musicians. We have loved Diana's work for years through her CD's and had the opportunity to attend her concert at the Meyerhoff in Baltimore a few weeks back. Needless to say, it was outstanding. Not only were her pianism and vocalism awesome, but the way she accomodated her trio as an "ensemble" rather than an "appendage" was remarkable. Moreover, she had had a cold and was a little "under the weather" but one would never know it. Her audience rapport was cool and sophisticated without being stuffy or effete. Loved everything about the gig and would go back again and again to hear her. Shades of Marion McPartland and Barbara Carroll!

  • Krall was, as ever, enchanting

by Lump on 7/15/09Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - BaltimoreRating: 4 out of 5

For years I have been a fan of Diana Krall. Her musicianship is without equal. She always gets the best from her side men. Her music is a delightful.

  • Love Diana Krall - but not this performance

by WASS on 7/15/09Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - BaltimoreRating: 3 out of 5

Diana Krall is an awsesome artist & I have most everything she has produced, but this performance at the Meyerhoff was lacking gusto. I suppose it could be attributed to a cold of sinus problem she seemed to have. She seemed to just go through the motions and was not very enthusiastic in her performance. Also, her vocals were hard to hear over the other instruments in her quartet. If I could have heard her vocals better, maybe I would not feel the dissapointment reflected in this review. Anyway, I am still a fan. I will just continue to buy her DVD performances and crank them up on my home theatre and pretend I am at the live show.

  • Diana Krall concert

by johnsonh on 7/15/09Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - BaltimoreRating: 4 out of 5

Diana is a real professional both from a performance and personality standpoint. It is nice to see a great performer with their ego under control. It was a wonderful evening. The audience was very responsive towards her. She is like having someone in your living room for the evening.

  • all that jazz

by gwick on 7/15/09nTelos Wireless Pavilion - PortsmouthRating: 3 out of 5

very talented musicians. Too many riffs for my liking. The first act was talented but none of the lyrics were in English...welcome to America. Either stay instrumental for the most part or learn English. great venue and perfect evening weather wise

  • Great performance; awful traffic

by WonderWoman on 7/15/09The Mann Center - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

Diana Krall and her band were wonderful. She's an incredible pianist, which I hadn't known before. Each member of her quartet was superb, her selections were great, there was a great blend of wonderful music and talking to the audience. I wish I had waited another day to hear her in Atlantic City, as traffic was horrible, especially leaving the park. I don't think I'd go back there again.

  • Diana Krall was Extraordinairy

by JimboinVA on 7/15/09nTelos Wireless Pavilion - PortsmouthRating: 5 out of 5

Diana Krall is without a doubt the current queen of jazz. Add to her voice the cool breeze off the river and the harbor lights, and you couldn't ask for a better night.

  • Diana Krall is amazing!

by TCetc on 7/15/09Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - BaltimoreRating: 5 out of 5

What a great concert! Diana Krall has such a beautiful, sexy voice, which is apparent on her CDs. What I didn't know, however, is how great a pianist she is. She really enjoyed playing the instrumental parts, and that really contributed to the show.

  • Diana was Diana

by Boom on 7/15/09Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - BaltimoreRating: 5 out of 5

third time seeing her and first time I was sitting so that could see her play. I was fascinated with watching her hands working the keyboards.

  • Diana Krall- what a classy lady!

    by HCML74 on 7/15/09Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - BaltimoreRating: 5 out of 5

Living proof that you can do more with less- three amazing musicians combined with her exceptional piano abilities, and then there is that voice....this is the lady all serious jazz artists should use as an example of what is the best in jazz today....
