DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.

Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

  • an excellent show

by michael01 on 7/16/09STANLEY CENTER FOR THE ARTS - UticaRating: 4 out of 5

Diana Krall performed like an expert. She mixed older titles and newer titles, which made it very entertaining. Her guitarist and drummer were great accompanists to her fine song abilities.

  • Diana Krall is always amazing

by KrallSupporter on 7/16/09Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - BaltimoreRating: 4 out of 5

I thought Diana and her crew were excellent! She has a distinct way of changing dynamics in volume that make you want to sit on the edge of your seat so as not to miss anything. The next chance I get to see her perform live, I am going to take it! As for the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, I was not impressed with their lack of staff on site. There were no ushers to keep audience members from walking into the Hall in the middle of songs. Many of the audience members, at least from where I was sitting, talked throughout the performance and some groups of people took the most inopportune times to leave and reenter the Hall. The audience member's lack of respect towards the performers as well as the absence of common courtesy and theater etiquette really took away from the performance. I believe having more staff to regulate and usher people in and out would have helped make the concert more memorable. Overall, I greatly enjoyed seeing her for the first time live however, I probably will try to avoid attending a concert at the Meyerhoff anytime soon.

  • Diana Krall sounded wonderful...but...

by drtjmich on 7/16/09Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - BaltimoreRating: 3 out of 5

Diana's voice sounded wonderful but the music was a little too loud and kinda sleepy. For me there were too many instrumental solos that made the song too drawn out and boring. Pair that with the fact that most of the music was mellow and it got kinda sleepy in there. I would recommend this concert only for die hard Diana fans-wait for a more upbeat tour if you aren't.

  • Our mini vacation

by ForestQuilter on 7/16/09nTelos Wireless Pavilion - PortsmouthRating: 2 out of 5

Husband and I have enjoyed listening to Diana Krall's albums for a number of years now and took this opportunity to see her in person because she was performing in our state. We travelled 4 1/2 hrs from our home and stayed overnight in Portsmouth. The outdoor venue at the Pavillion was very nice but Diana's voice lends itself to a more intimate setting. Most notably, however, is her impressive piano playing skill. Still love that voice but think we'll stick with her CDs.

  • Diana Krall

First class all the way. Her smokey voice, sweet humor, and magic fingers were magic, even though she admittedly was not feeling well. Diana gave it her all, and delivered.

  • Diana Krall best concert I've been to in Years!!!

by MysDawn on 7/16/09Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - BaltimoreRating: 5 out of 5

This was a very relaxing evening. The mood was light and warm. The performance was excellent. I brought my best friend along who never heard of Mrs. Krall and she really enjoyed herself and Mrs. Krall gained another fan. Although the concert was expensive I wouldn't trade it for anything.

  • Wonderful Concert!

by RobertBobPaulson on 7/16/09Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - BaltimoreRating: 5 out of 5

In this first class jazz concert Diana Krall amazed by winning the audience early (she was in the Baltimore Aquarium with her two kids and was quiet talkative about it) and - of course - her exceptional talents: her voice and her piano play. Accompanied by no less than Jeff Hamilton (who played with Oscar Peterson) the band made me tip my food to the beat when necessary in faster pieces, and give me goose skin in the slower ones, such as "You are my thrill".

  • Diana Krall was the best!

by Luckey on 7/16/09Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - BaltimoreRating: 5 out of 5

1st time at the Myerhoff. The Venue was great. Diana's music was sharp & crisp.. Seeing her perform was a great experience. She was nice enough to give me her autograph. If you get a chance go see her.

Always thought DK was outstanding but had never seen in person - what a show what a talent - was even made better due to her huskyness because of her illness added a great quality to her voice

  • Diana Krall

    by Fan1000 on 7/16/09Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - BaltimoreRating: 4 out of 5

Huge fan. Not quite what I had expected. Maybe after having all her CD's and DVD's I had set my concert level to high. I don't think the audio techs had the mics and sound system set-up correctly. Had trouble understanding and hearing Diana when she sang and spoke. I would highly recommend a Diana Krall concert if your are a fan. Her musicians are amazing and she is a great piano player.

  • Diana Krall was great!!!

    by Shadow59 on 7/16/09nTelos Wireless Pavilion - PortsmouthRating: 5 out of 5

I am a great fan of smooth jazz and I just recently started to listen to her more intently. I really enjoyed her show and would see her again if she came back to the Virginia area.

  • Diana Krall was awesome!

by CPEJR on 7/16/09nTelos Wireless Pavilion - PortsmouthRating: 5 out of 5

Diana Krall was a wonderful concert. The venue is intimate and the artist was truly engaged in her performance. To make the evening even more special, the weather was perfect; a slight breeze with moderate temperatures, a perfect summer evening.

  • Sultry summer with Diana Krall

by jboucer on 7/16/09nTelos Wireless Pavilion - PortsmouthRating: 5 out of 5

First time at nTelos Pavillion and definitely won't be the last. Despite having a cold, Diana played her best and still sounded incredible. Intimate setting and great location. You just can't beat her soothing voice.

  • Diana Krall really knows her stuff!

by Dalace on 7/15/09Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - BaltimoreRating: 4 out of 5

The show was great. Krall knows her jazz and is very good at playing whatever song she chooses. Although I was hoping she'd play more of her own stuff, she played mostly great songs by those she admired, like Nat King Cole. But she and her band did wonderfully and if you like the way she sounds on CD you'll love her concert. The only thing I was disappointed in was after the concert we were hoping to get a picture with her and not only did she not allow us pictures she also kept sunglasses on at 10pm at night. Not very personable but great musician. The picture attached is the closest we could get.

  • Diana Krall terrible concert

by Ponduro on 7/15/09The Mann Center - PhiladelphiaRating: 1 out of 5

I travelled to Philly with my Brazilian girlfriend to hear Ms Krall. She played onlyu one saong from her recent album of Brazilian Jazz and Bossa Nova. She spent the evening singing some slow songs from the 1940's and introduxcing band members for prolonged solos, She complained that she was sick. Half the people left early, We (and everone we can influence) will never see her again.

  • Where's the Music

    by Richard88 on 7/15/09nTelos Wireless Pavilion - PortsmouthRating: 1 out of 5

I went to hear Diana Krall perform the songs I love to hear her sing. Instead all I heard was her sing songs her Dad loves to hear her sing. Maybe her Dad would have liked to have bought my ticket from me.

  • Wonderful Diana Krall Concert!

by Patartsy on 7/15/09nTelos Wireless Pavilion - PortsmouthRating: 5 out of 5

Diana Krall was wonderful. I have never enjoy a concert as much. She was personable yet mysterious. The nTelos Wirless Pavilion was the perfect venue for her. The open air, light breeze and Diana Krall's voice floating through the air. I have been telling everyone who will listen about the concert and about nTelos Pavilion.

  • Good show

by Smplylady on 7/15/09Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - BaltimoreRating: 4 out of 5

Diana mentioned that she and her band members were sharing some kind of "bug" and she did appear to be a little under the weather. I don't know if this was the cause for her lack of singing; however, she wowed the crowd by tickling the ivories. She is an accomplished musician on many levels. I had hoped she would have sung more of my favorites - oldies but goodies.

  • Unforgettable!

by Jupu on 7/15/09Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - BaltimoreRating: 4 out of 5

I'm a HUGE fan of Diana Krall. I thoroughly enjoyed the show. Setlist was a nice variety. My only negative is that it ended TOO soon. She has amazing talent.

While the opening act (some Argentinia guitar dude) was a complete snore- she seemed to be bored with the idea of performing. Her voice was strained & she did mention she was suffering through a cold. I've seen her in concert before & was a tad disappointed with the lack of enthusiasm in this particular show.
