DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.

Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

  • Diane Krall was wonderfully entertaining!

    by gerri2 on 7/17/09nTelos Wireless Pavilion - PortsmouthRating: 5 out of 5

Diane Krall was extremely entertaining. Her voice is soothing, mellow, and pleasant to hear. Her music is soulful. She was amazingly humorous, which added another dimension to her concert. Plus the Pavilion is an excellent venue for entertainment.

  • Wonderfull show

by Semajatof on 7/17/09Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - BaltimoreRating: 4 out of 5

Although can't truly consider it a "show", Diana and her guys sounded nice. I had to sit all the way upstairs because of ticket price, and that would be the only complaint about my experience I have.

very often artists do not sound like the studio recordings -this was definately not the case with diana krall -sounds were smooth and the added bonus of 'conversations' amazing

  • Diana Krall was Awesome!!

by Kennedysmom on 7/16/09Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - BaltimoreRating: 4 out of 5

Diana Krall was awesome!!! Although she had a slight cold, she was a real professional who worked through it and gave a wonderful performance. I only wish the concert lasted a little longer!!

  • Diana's show-

Always have enjoyed her show. Saw her years ago at CNU here on the Peninsula. More mature and more sultry...

  • Beautiful Music, Night and Lady!

by DWhite on 7/16/09nTelos Wireless Pavilion - PortsmouthRating: 5 out of 5

The weather and venue for a quiet night with Diana Krall was perfection. The cool summer breeze and the cool jazzy notes floated in perfect unison over our seats. The song selections helped blend her sultry voice into a perfect romantic summer evening. This was one of the best concerts, all around that we have attended in the last few years. Thanks to Ntelos, the beautiful river setting, a cool sparkling summer night, a great crowd, and the amazing Ms Diana Krall, for a wonderful evening and a time that we will always remember. It' was as good as it gets.

  • Excellent female jazz singer/piano player

by JackieS on 7/16/09Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - BaltimoreRating: 4 out of 5

It is always encouraging to go to a performance expecting to be satisfied and the performer delivers a show up to your expectations. Diana is that kind of an entertainer and her delivery, orchestration and presence were excellent. I expected to see an excellent jazz concert, both the singing and playing and I did.

  • Diana Krall at Ntelos Pavillion, Portsmouth, VA.

by islandreamer on 7/16/09nTelos Wireless Pavilion - PortsmouthRating: 4 out of 5

Great concert! Folding seats were too close to each other at Ntelos Pavillion. Very uncomfortable since people were rubbing elbows.

  • Diana is Wonderful even when she has a cold

by Hanford on 7/16/09Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - BaltimoreRating: 4 out of 5

Diana Krall is a lovely performer. She has a real tight group and they seem to really enjoy playing with each other. I would have liked to see them when Russell Malone was on guitar but that is neither here nor there. They played a great variety of songs. These included classics such as Cheek to Cheek as well as some innovative choices such as work by Tom Waits. The Tom Waits number was a nice curve ball. It threw a little different flavor into the mix besides the expected standards. All the players got a good chance to solo and when someone else had the floor Diana's comping was perfect. Not too much, not too little. They traded fours on a number which is always exciting. Good give and take of sonic energy. My date and I were pleased to see a family sitting in the row in front of us. Although the teenagers in the family were periodically falling asleep it was good exposure to something other than Pop music. My main criticism was the placement of the band members in relationship to Diana. The way it was set up she was all the way to the right of the stage and you could barely see her face. I heard some other audience members complaining about this as well. Another thing that added to this was her hair was in front of her face a lot. Now, it is true that she has very beautiful hair, but I like to see someone's expressions when they sing. Diana mentioned that the band was a little sick. Some cold going around. She coughed a few times while she performed and had to clear her throat. Poor girl. Even with a cold she put on a great show, engaging with the audience, telling of her adventure to the the Baltimore Science center and Aquarium with her twins, and of course she swung both hard and gentle. Like a good romance her playing was both hot and subtle.

  • diana krall rose to the occasion

by leonlifer on 7/16/09STANLEY CENTER FOR THE ARTS - UticaRating: 4 out of 5

Diana Krall and her very excellent band performed at the Stanley Theatre in Utica. She was ill with a cold, however, did not let that stop her from putting on a very enjoyable show. She joked that her cold made her singing "even more sultry". Despite having to cough and blow her nose during breaks in singing, the show was all one could hope for. Hope you're feeling better Diana! The road is a wicked mistress!

  • Diana Krall was great

by Jazzguy on 7/16/09nTelos Wireless Pavilion - PortsmouthRating: 5 out of 5

The show was fantastic. Diana is great , but she has surronded herself with great musicians. The sound was topnotch. What a great performance.

  • Diana was fabulous!!!!!!

by branson on 7/16/09nTelos Wireless Pavilion - PortsmouthRating: 5 out of 5

Diana's performance was really incredible. We felt like we were in a room with her playing and singing just for us. She has a way of making you feel like you're an intimate friend. We hope she will be back on tour in our area again. We couldn't believe she was in concert in the Tidewater area.

  • Too much Back & mumbling

by Doni on 7/16/09Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - BaltimoreRating: 3 out of 5

I was very excited to see her on stage-love her music however she does not play well to an audience. Her piano was set-up so she had her back turned to at least 1/2 the audience. I think when an artist is performing live they need to give as much equal time to all of the audience not just half. Postioning her piano differently would of help. Also when she spoke to the audience between some of her music it was very hard to hear her. Kinda like a mumbling effect. I might be 50 years old, but I know my hearing is not that bad. Her music was wonderful and her band very talented, but again she needs to improve on how to play more to a live audience.

  • Underwhelming

by MikeyLove on 7/16/09nTelos Wireless Pavilion - PortsmouthRating: 3 out of 5

Came to hear and see Diana, not the boring come-on act or her backup do the same solos over and over. Her backup guys are amazing but not the reason for a long trip. Loved her performance but all too short. Still pissed that she won't record "Comes love."

  • Krall everything & more!

    by dkfan2 on 7/16/09nTelos Wireless Pavilion - PortsmouthRating: 5 out of 5

Being a fan of D Krall for years, we were delighted that she was finally appearing in our area, at a venue we had never experienced! My husband & I walked from our downtown address to the ferry, took it to Portsmouth and walked a few blocks right by the water's edge, to discover a delightful environment. nTelos is a superb concert setting -- right on the water, a beautiful cloud-like canopy, a small intimate experience. Very adult, very classy event: Diana Krall was everything that I expected, even better, if that's possible! She not only plays & sings impeccably, with an awesome unique quality, but she does it seemingly effortlessly and chats with her audience in a natural, witty style that bespeaks her creative talents.

  • Diana Krall great talent

Jazz has always been a passion with me starting with Frank Sinatra and ending with Barney Kessel and everybody in between.Diana Krall is right up there with them. She puts on a great show .

  • Fantastic

by IntoJazz on 7/16/09nTelos Wireless Pavilion - PortsmouthRating: 5 out of 5

My wife and I had a great time. If Diana ever comes back we will definitely be there. Plus, the NTelos Ampitheater was a great venue. The weather was perfect, crowd was chill, and it was small enough not to feel like we were in the nosebleeds even though we were on the lawn. I would definitely recommend both Diana Krall and the NTelos Portsmouth Pavillion.

  • Diana Krall is spectacular!

by Vodka on 7/16/09Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - BaltimoreRating: 5 out of 5

Last night's concert with Diana Krall was wonderful! Great concert! Better than I expected, and I expected the best. Diana Krall is talented, beautiful and blonde. Her music is sweetness. John Clayton on bass, Jeff Hamilton on drums and Anthony Wilson on guitar complete the awesome Diana's vocals. Diana has talent in her finger tips and she owns the piano! Be sure to own her new concert video "Live in Rio." For Diana lovers, don't miss this world tour!!
