DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.

Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

  • Diana Krall- performance was short

by Beckstir on 8/2/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

Wonderful artist and back up trio. We sat on the left side of the theatre. She had her back to us for 99 percent of the performance. She needs to play and speak to her backside more. Maybe a portable mike and a little walk around would be better. Show could have been a bit longer.

  • left early

Just not impressed. She seemed stoned and her chatting with the audience was rambling.

  • short set

Nice show--90 minutes exactly --including one encore song

  • Diana, short and sweet...

by Daren on 8/2/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

Can you ever get enough of Diana in one sitting? Wish this was a bit more of her, but just happy to take her in live. Great combo as well...

  • Diana Krall in Denver

    by Fr8ghtrain on 8/2/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 3 out of 5

I enjoyed Diana' s style and sound but she is not an entertainer. A night club would be a better setting to see and enjoy her show. She did not do the Look of Love.

  • If U thought it too short then U know it was good

    by Mongo123 on 8/2/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

It was one of those concerts where you did not want it to end. That voice!

  • Diana at her best!

by livejazz on 8/2/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

Wow, what a terrific show! Exactly what you would hope for; just Diana and her trio, loading every tune with brilliant solos. Her stories and conversation w/the audience between songs were a wonderful compliment to the music. I never knew she was so funny! You MUST go see her!!

  • Diana Krall is so refreshing

by topolino on 8/2/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

Diana is just plain fun to watch, as well as listen to. Her backup musicians are very talented. We enjoy her so much we will see her again next month in Paris.

  • Diana Krall continues to enthrall

by Beecharmer on 8/2/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

This was the 4th time I've seen Ms Krall, and after two outdoor shows, it was a delight to hear her again at an indoor venue. With her standard backup of bass, guitar and drums she again proved how exuberant the format of jazz quartet is. Each performer had turns to wow the audience, each doing it with ease. Her guitarist is obviously a big fan of Les Paul's style, the drummer does a mean solo, and it was so cool to hear how quiet the audience was when the bass player soloed. But Diana was the star, of course, ripping fast and loose on the uptempo numbers, and stunning with her smoky lower tones on slow numbers, two where she was the only one playing. If you haven't seen her, get tickets and see one of the greatest living Jazz masters!

  • Krall was great

by Bolder on 8/2/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

Diana Krall was wonderful and fun. The venue was not so great. The seating up front has not elevation and it's very had to see. Please pick a different venue next time.

The music was great and her story telling was funny! We would see her again at this venue, however, we would get seats closer to the stage

A disappointment. Would have been better to just play a CD. Low energy, did not make any effort to connect with the audience. Boring. Usuallly love her, but tonight was the pits

  • TOO Short

by MVMC on 7/22/09Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - BaltimoreRating: 3 out of 5

We were very disappointed in the show. After waiting years to see her and owning everyone of her CD's, I felt gypped. Concert was NOT long enough. THe hall was great though, but for the money I was expecting more. Don't think I'll see her again.

  • Awesome!!!

  • Diana Krall so classy

by Bitsyanne on 7/18/09STANLEY CENTER FOR THE ARTS - UticaRating: 5 out of 5

Very refreshing and she is quite funny... In spite of her cold her performance was very good. Very simple stage format.

  • An Amazing Show

by JoeRK on 7/17/09nTelos Wireless Pavilion - PortsmouthRating: 5 out of 5

We enjoyed this show very much as did the crowd of Diana Krall’s enthusiastic fans. A live performance is always better than a recorded performance. Diana is so personable and interacts with her audience between songs. She has great musicians. All in all, a great evening. When will she be back!

  • Diana Krall delivered the goods!

by suranceman on 7/17/09Meyerhoff Symphony Hall - BaltimoreRating: 4 out of 5

I’ve been a fan of Diana Krall for many years and always wanted to hear her in concert. When I found out that she was going to be in my own “neck of the woods”, I couldn’t get my tickets fast enough. I must say, I had mixed feelings about it after it was over. I predicted to my wife that her opening number would be “I Love Being Hear With You” and I was right! She also played many of her more popular hits like “Exactly Life You”, “T’is Wonderful”, and “Let’s Fall in Love”, “ Black Crow” and “The Frim Fram Sauce”. She also added some songs that she hasn’t recorded yet and played one encore. Every number was impeccably done and met all of my expectations. My only disappointment was that Diana was able to interact more with the audience than she did. I suspected early on that she may have had a cold, which she later confirmed to the audience. I understand that this was out of her control so my disappointment wasn’t with her as much as it was with the circumstances. In the early part of the concert I could hardly hear her voice. Eventually her microphone was cranked up to enable us to hear her singing. I blame that on the sound crew for not anticipating that her cold might affecting her sing voice. She was able to tell us about her day in Baltimore with her twin boys. They spent the afternoon visiting the National Aquarium and the Maryland Science Center in Baltimore's Inner Harbor. She had nothing but praise for these two facilities and our fine city. It made me proud to be a Baltimorean! The bottom line is that I enjoyed seeing Diana Krall in person even though she was not feeling 100%. I know that it affected her performance but she did the best she could under the circumstances and didn’t cancel. I wish there was more audience interaction so we could have had more time to get to know the artist. I guess this means that I will see her again the next time she is on tour!
