DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT
Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.
Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).
Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

Always loved her voice, song selection, and arrangement. what gave me a entirely new perspective is, diana's skil and range as a jazz pianist. She could more than carry a concert on her jazz pianists skill alone. one drawback : too short, with the price of concert tickets entertainers should strive to give more to the audiance, not be content to deliver the minimum performance. and go home.
I was expecting(which could have been part of the problem) her to play more of her wonderful songs. Instead, she didn't really seem into the night. She kept giving the three members of her band a chance to play their instruments solo. They were wonderful and amazingly talented, but I went to a Diana Krall concert to listen to Diana Krall, not to look on as she vouched for the musical master pieces each of her band members can assemble individually. It felt as though the solo performances were half of the concert. Her voice is, of course, amazing, which is why I was hoping to hear more of it.
Good show, but for the price too much talking and not enough playing. Probably only played for an hour when you cut out the late start(8:15), chit chat, and ending at 9:30pm.
She talked as if she had had too much to drink. Abit slurred, and random. Corny statements that she thought were quite funny. Instrumentals were good. Her piano playing was superior.
Quiet Nights was very subdued - almost a converstional, intimate, introspective mood and feeling. Great show with a lot of quiet anecdotes from Diana with great backup musicians, as always.
Some new selections, some old favorites. Simply fabulous! Jazz piano beyond remarkable - faboulous back-up trio! The only way it could have been better is if she had played longer, and longer, and longer!!!
This is the second time I've seen Dianna Krall in concert, and this was even better than the first time. She joked with the audience and her music is magical. I could listen to her sing and play the piano with her trio for hours.
First time seeing Diana in concert and was really disappointed. Didn't play nearly long enough ... featured her band more than her incredible voice. Wish she had sang a few favorites. She did mention that hubby, Elvis, was there ... a quick visit from him with her on-stage would have made it a little more worthwhile for the cost of tix. Love her music but wouldn't pay to see her in concert again.
Really enjoyed this concert - this was the 4th time I'd seen Diana Krall perform, and I'd say it was nearly as good as when she performed several years ago at the Paramount in Denver. Her banter was fun. Only wish that the Wells Fargo Theater had a better sound system.
Just seeing her is a joy and to hear her voice is a treasure. She did seem very off and concert was not up to her caliber. Still will continue to enjoy her music.
What a wonderful night of music. Diana Krall is not of this world. The other musicians beyond great. I had a wonderful time
I enjoyed Diana Krall at Jazz Aspen more than five years ago. She sang and played beautifully -- for such a young woman to be singing jazz standards was amazing.. My expectations were high and they were more than met. The band was tight, the Wells Fargo Theatre was surprisingly "intimate" for such a big audience and Diana was incredible. She has matured as a musician and as a person. Great evening of music and laughter ( her stream of consciousness raps between songs was hilarious ).
I've listened to Diana Krall's albums. But the live experience was so expansive and wonderful
It was a great concert. Diana and her band are exceptional. My only gripe is that it was a little short (an hour and a half), but my tickets were half price, so I didn't mind too much.
Diana Krall was wonderful. She was personable and put her heart into her music. Unfortunately, I was not familiar with Well Fargo Theater when I bought the tickets online. For some reason, this theater is built with the first rows on a decreasing incline from the stage. From our 5th row seats, we could see nothing. My husband went back to the box office to see what could be done. The best they could do for us was to put us in the 24th row in seats that were half the cost of ours. At least we could see Diana from there. I will pay to see Diana again, but not if she plays Wells Fargo.
We had 7th row seats. This made the performance interesting as we could see her agility on the piano. She is without question a gifted artist. My concern/disappointment is that a large % of her songs were slow-ish jazz tunes that did not showcase her playing abilities well. I was left feeling she had a lot more "wow factor" in the tank than we saw during most of the show. I wish she'd mixed the music selection more as several of the songs seemed indistinguishable from one another. Her encore song was a song written by her husband. (Elvis Costello). It may as well have been a lulliby. I think the crowd largely shared this opinion. I was expecting her to close the show in grand fashion. It was an enjoyable show. I'm just greedy and I wanted to see her show her talent on the piano more.
The concert started 25 minutes late because a LOT of people can't seem to arrive at a concert on time. Pretty inconsiderate of both the performers and the other concert-goers. The music was pretty good, I just with it went longer. She performed for less than 90 minutes and some of that may have been due to the late start.
Superb show. She came out of the box swinging. She has wonderful stage presence and had the audience in the plam of her hand throughout the show. Diana just keeps getting better and better. Good misx of old and new pieces for her set.
The evening with Diana Krall was absolutely memorable. She was fantastic on the piano and singing. The trio that backed her up was great. All the performers were a joy to listen to. We would definitely go see her again if she ever comes to Denver. SUPERB!!!!
