DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT
Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.
Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).
Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

Diana Krall is a supurb musician whose musical timing is a joy. She looks at music in a new inovative way, and her voice is also very unexpected and pleasing. I gave three instead of 5 stars in that the show was an hour and 1/2 total. Tickets were super expensive and she did a lot of talking thoroughout the show, which I found charming and interesting...now the however part, so maybe 10 to 15 minutes of talking. This was my first live performance seeing Ms. Krall and I would expect a minimum of two hours for the price charged.
We really enjoyed our evening - Diana Krall is a great musician, and quite good at expressing herself, musically and verbally. In a world where vocal understatement is so unusual, understatement and subtlety are precisely what mark Diana Krall! She seems to be one of the most quietly expressive jazz singers of her generation. The theater was the perfect setting, comfortable, cool, quiet. LOVED IT!
For the ticket price of $125, this performance was seriously lacking. First, the performance only lasted a little over one hour, fifteen minutes. a concert of that length is only worth about $60. Also, Diana didn't play very many of the favorites we were hoping for. Second, the seating in Wells Fargo is terrible. Having a flat, rather than ascending, seating area in the first thirty or so rows makes it extremely difficult to see the stage. I will probably never attend a concert in that venue again because of the bad seating arrangement.
I have wanted to see Diana Krall perform since I bought ‘’The Look of Love’. I love her interpretations of classic jazz songs. Diane Krall was excellent, as were here three accompanists. Great solos to the wonderful music she plays. Here banter between songs was quite funny and provided an window into both her personal and professional life. Having been to her home town of Nanaimo twice, I knew some of the landmark she referred to. However, the show was very short. On at 8:20, off stage at 9:40, plus one song encore. Show over at 9:50. I have to compare Rush at Red Rocks, 3 hour plus for the same price ($100), or clubs when I lived on Miami Beach, $15 to $45 for 3- one hour plus sets. So I’m glad I saw her, but my wife and I are overall very disappointed at the short show.
I read several reviews of her summer (?) concerts posted on the promoters website, while in the process of ordering my ticket for the Denver show. Unfortunately, several were NOT favorable. I recalled her Red Rocks concert in the pouring rain. If D.K. could be positive, giving her all through that experience, she won't disappoint. I invested in THE best seats offered: 3row, pit, dead center of her keyboard. The concert was FABULOUS. She was the consumate performer giving an even more amazing concert than R.R. I love her voice. I loved the songs she chose. Her piano work and energy on the 'Steinway' was amazing as usual. Her 3 band members were all equally fabulous. The evening was great. I even loved her fushia stellettos! The unfortunate ending to the evening: the parking garage..........what a mess! Another example of Denver's 'poor planning' egoic outcomes. ;`(
I have seen Diana Krall before, several years ago in Seattle and I have followed her recording career for a number of years. She just keeps getting better both as a jazz pianist and as a jazz vocalist. She is more relaxed on stage as well. She has that powerful, deep voice and with her narrow vocal range, projects a huge range of feeling with everything from a whisper to a boom. Her side men were amazingly good, as they were the last time I saw her. This venue is large, really large, but it worked. The sound was "off" to start with but by the middle of the second number the sound designer/operator got it right. Good sight lines and comfortable seating in this very big room. A delightful evening - even if she had to "fill" occasionally to catch her breath at this altitude.
We have been Diana Krall fans for years and were very excited all season leading up to the event. Great venue - intimate setting achieved in such a large hall. We were disappointed with the brevity of the concert, however. Every number was great, as always, but we think perhaps she and the trio were having problems with the altitude, which led to them cutting it short. Given that this was Denver, not Carnegie, I would think the (relatively) higher ticket price would result in a longer set. (~82 minutes.)
Absolutely, hands down the best concert I have ever seen in my life. The woman is astounding, her band impeccable, and her personality was unforgettable.
Diana and her band put on a great show. I'll see her every time she comes to town.
I will see her every time she comes to town. She's really funny too!
Talented lady. Didn't play enough favorites, and a very weak encore of only one song. For the price of the tickets we expected alot more.
I have been o 5 of diana's concerts.. This is better than the one in Red Rocks last yeqar
Diana Krall's performance was fabulous. She is so much better in person than on CD. Her voice is husky and pure but it is on the piano that she really thrills an audience. Krall allows her fellow musicians to shine and together they jam to create jazz magic. Her quirky comments only enhance the show and add to night's enjoyment.
Diana Krall is such a talent and seems totally comfortable on stage, creating her music and conversing with the audience. Her sense of fun came through during her comments between songs. It is also fascinating to watch Diana's hand position. I've never seen anyone else with the technique she has.
It was OK. I'm glad I went. Would have like to see her in a more intimate venue like a club.
Diana Krall is her own persona, a memorable appearance and presentation, the voice well suited to jazz, and great piano skills. The remarkable feature of the concert was the quality of the musicians surrounding her. Even though each had opportunity to show his skills individually. just following the various parts of the arrangements showed well the talent on display in the background. Outstanding!!
The band members were great! Hot licks on guitar, bass & drums. Diana was lovely to listen to and cooked on the keys, especially on "Dancing Cheek to Cheek". WOW! Would have liked for them to play a bit longer. Concert was not quite an hour. Came back for an encore and played one tune. Overall a very pleasant experience.
Her usual self. Love her giggle. Love that she opens up about herself. The musicians with her are really good. She didn't do an intermission, but Leonard Cohen stayed 'til 11:00. 'Course maybe she was motivated to spend some time with her husband.
An accomplished jazz pianist as well as singer! WOW
