DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.

Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

She can certainly play the piano and has a stunning voice...BUT she chatted a lot and we'd gone to hear her sing! Also rather annoyed to have received an email offering 2 for 1 tickets the day before the show having already paid full price for 2 tickets and we weren't the only ones who felt that way from comments made by other people who were at the show.

  • Late arrival disruption

by CHICAC on 8/4/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 3 out of 5

The concert was very good-too short. she arrived late and guitar was amped too much. It was very disruptive for late arrivals to have the benefit of their seats when it was disruptive to those who made the effort to arrive on time. Ushers stood in the ailes. Poor control. Put the late commers in the back seats and then take a five minute break to seat them? Frankly, the venue was a bit too large for her.

  • Diana Krall was Wonderful...

by FanODiana on 8/4/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

...but she deserved better. While she and her group did nice, tight jazz numbers, the HUGE Wells Fargo Theater threatened to swallow up much of the intricate riffs and soft vocals. With that exception, the concert was really great. She and her crew are not only talented, but easily communicate with the audience and constantly display their showmanship - without ever going over the top.

  • Diana Krall - worth the wait! Incredible show.

by oldMGinColorado on 8/3/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

I've waited a long time to see Diana Krall and it was well worth it. The production was simple and low-budget but the music was astounding. Her musicians were as good as they get in the music business. Always knew that she was a terrific singer but didn't realize that she was such a great jazz pianist. Can't wait until she comes back to Denver.

  • Not the best

    by SKT2280 on 8/3/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 3 out of 5

She and her fellow musicians were amazing, and the venue was perfect. My key complaint was Diana only played for about 90 minutes. When ticket prices easily fetch $100/each and up (with fees, etc.) artist should respond with a show that is worthy of such a price. Considering all the stories or small talk she had between every song, I bet she didin't play more than 10 songs the entire evening; I was disappointed with such a short show.

  • Diana Krall

by Pilou on 8/3/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 3 out of 5

While the music was good, I found the show to be too short compared to the one I had seen a few years ago. It would definitely a better show with an intermission and more than a dozen songs or piece of music. Expensive for such a show!

  • Not Enough Diana

by sails on 8/3/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 3 out of 5

When she played and sang it was fantastic! All of the musicians were awesome. But I came to hear Diana and I didn't get enough. Too much time spent jamming.

  • Diana Krall and company were awesome!

by JeanneJ on 8/3/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

Diana Krall and her wonderful trio--the same folks she records with- provided a delightful evening of great music, and a chance to get to know Diana as a wife and mother as well as a great musician. All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

  • Wished she

    by lester5430 on 8/3/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 3 out of 5

Would have done more singing ....Amazing voice playlist could have been better ..Maybe she didnt like the fact that it was so vacant at the show or she had to sell tickets for two for one ( after I paid full price for two ).....Any way dont know if I would go again

  • improve great-short performance

by ParkhillFan on 8/3/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

Diana is great--improvs are something else! But she seemed a bit tired and I think the altitude was affecting her. Short ,1hr 30 min for the price

  • Just Average

by BABSP on 8/3/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 3 out of 5

I looked forward to this concert haveing been rained out at Red Rocks. She was on for only 85 min. Sang only one new song and seemed like she would rather be playing with her kids. Fine music, great musicians but it was like listening to a CD.

  • Excellent!

Diana's performance was incredible! And so were the 3 gentlemen who played with her. Amazing musicians.

  • Diana Krall better than ever

The August 1 Dianna Krall concert in the Denver Wells Fargo Theater was an exceptional event. Ms. Krall's performance was superb.

  • altitude sickness?

    by jim12345 on 8/3/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 2 out of 5

From the minute Dinna took to the stage she seemed tired and out of breath. She spent alot of time talking/babbling between songs and not much time singing. While the songs she did sing were good, I just got the feeling the 5280' above sea level got the best or her. If I chose to see her again, I would do it a venue closr to sea level.

  • Love Diana Krall, but . . .

by dingalingdawn on 8/3/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 3 out of 5

Let me start by saying that Diana Krall and her band are incredible artists. The music was moving and strong, but extremely limited in the number of pieces performed. We didn't count the number of songs, but I'd guess it was around 10. With no opening act, this was a short evening. And while this is jazz-oriented, there were just too many rifts (riffs?) --- every song featured a riff by every member of the 4-piece band. Not nearly enough of Diana's sultry, beautiful voice. I might be in the minority here, as clearly Diana has a strong following in Denver, but I had wished that she had sung more. We left the venue, The Wells Fargo Theater, feeling sort of ho-hum about the event. As for the venue, it's great acoustically, but not too comfortable to sit in (with long legs!) for very long. Overall, I will definitely continue to listen to Diana's music, but I probably wouldn't pay to see her again in person.

  • Diana & Band Impressive

by DCakes on 8/3/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

I don't listen to jazz, so I was hesitant to go. I REALLY enjoyed the show!

  • S'Marvelous!

by CBRaintree on 8/3/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

My brother went with me, he being an excellent keyboard artist, was extremely impressed with her skill; and, being male, was drooling over her beauty. We even had an "Elvis-sighting" when Diana's husband slipped discretely in a side door next to us and sat in a seat a few rows in front of us to see her encore. Brava!!

  • Tickets are crazy pricey these days. TOO TOO short

by skipaddlehikejammer on 8/3/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 3 out of 5

Barely one & half hour which included 20 minutes of yak yak about silly nothing. Performance was good though. Felt that I didnt get my $200 worth for 2 .

  • Krall in Denver

by denverbb on 8/3/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

An awesome evening with four superb artists. Excellent sound .The concert could have been a little longer, but she was amazing on the piano. Thankfully there was no political whining coming from the stage. I go to concerts to get away from politics not to hear a performers opinion, which is invariably slanted to the left, so this was a nice change.

  • short show disappointed

    by beyou78 on 8/3/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 1 out of 5

I saw Diana Krall two years ago and she was great so I want again. Poor choice; a ticket in excess of $ 80 was wasted. The show was less than 1.5 hours and she seemed disinterested and without focus. It was like the show was a pain and a waste of her time. Another artist has cashed in and decided that the hard earned dollars paid for a show are hers regardless of entertainment value. Last time for me. I go to 8 or 10 concerts a year so this is a big disappointment.
