DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.

Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

  • Not So Great

by JAZZANISE on 8/9/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 3 out of 5

I was very disappointed in the brevity of her performance. A little over an hour isn't very much listening pleasure for the price of the ticket and setting aside an entire evening. Also, the whole encore thing is just ridiculous in this day and age--and SO CONTRIVED. It's appalling that the audience pays a large sum of money to see a performer, then has to go through the motions of "bowing down to the great one" to eek out one more song. It would have been much nicer to cut to the chase and not waste the audience's time and energy. In the time it took she and the band to exit the stage, to be "cheered/wooed" back on stage for one additional song, she could have probably performed 2-3 more songs. I feel it's belittling to me and others to have to blow sugar up any performer's arse. Obviously, we think they are wonderful performers or we wouldn't pay $100+ to come and see them in the first place. The encore thing is just soooooo old and outdated--and comes across as a hugely inflated ego.

Sedate and cerebral. Much like listening to her CD in our living room. lost the audience by the 2nd song. Encore was low key. Great musician, best suited for a lounge act not a large venue.

  • Too quiet for this rocknroller

by VegasGuy1 on 8/9/09Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort - Las VegasRating: 2 out of 5

Diana Krall is an excellent musician and her band is top rate too but for someone more used to the intensity of rock n roll her quiet music was putting me to sleep. The audience was enjoying it and she is very good at what she does,I'm just used to more adrenilene at my concerts

  • Not the Greatest

by YOBEWILD on 8/9/09Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort - Las VegasRating: 2 out of 5

Diana did not sing enough for us, too much music. The jazz she played was to out wild and the solo performances by the drummer, guitarist and bass players were nothing to boast about.

  • Quiet Nights was soothing. . .

by Auntie1 on 8/9/09Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort - Las VegasRating: 5 out of 5

Diana Krall has a remarkable style - an exceptional pianist with a voice to match. Her companions on the stage were no less and the evening was filled with soothing notes for the soul.

  • ...good but less than anticipated

by dispassionate on 8/9/09Pearl at the Palms Resort - Las VegasRating: 3 out of 5

..the overall performance was just a little bit too low-key for the non hard-core fan.. while she is a jazz musician.. there were just too many solo instrumentals, and not enough of 'her' voice (which most would have come to hear). .. saw her awhile back on the East coast and it was a much more upbeat, stand-up vocal performance... enjoyed it allot more.

Great Show- everyone at the top of their game. Plenty of content too!

  • Diana Krall and others

by mrbeebs on 8/8/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

I enjoyed the Diana Krall concert very much, which one significant complaint. The band members. in the support cast, would do individual solos for several minutes on nearly every song, taking a couple of minutes each. I didnt pay to hear a solo from these guys, I paid to hear Diana sing and play. I am fine with an occasional band member showcase number, but nearly every song?!

  • Diana and Band were Great

by PHXJazzFan on 8/7/09Dodge Theater - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Great concert. Great trio backing her up. They really lit it up on almost every song when they each had solos. The drum solo with the brushes on Cheek to Cheek was great. Diana sounded great, took time to talk about personal things. Great selection of songs. Four amazing musicians, although Diana complained about her piano player not doing so well that night. Extended play time on almost every number.

  • Diana Krall plays Denver

by Liebshaum on 8/7/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

Hats off to the classy Diana. Opening number featured solos by each band member. All talented musicians. Diana is doing the Mommy track and her comments were a little spacey, but she excelled in her performance. Several times her voice and arrangements took my breath away. I felt the concert was somewhat short. If I had paid $125/ticket I would have been very unhappy. I enjoyed the concert.

  • Diana was impressive !

by Kness on 8/6/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

Diana Krall and her band totally exceeded my expectations ! The show was incredible, her repertoire was very diverse, slow songs, up beat songs, other artists' songs, etc and the sound was flawless ! We were sitting really high up in one of the last roads and I could close my eyes and hear every instrument together with her amazing voice working in harmony. The stage was very cool too ! One of the best concerts I have been in, she is a terrific artist and her musicians are of the highest caliber. Oh and one more thing.... she is also incredibly funny !... who would think?

  • Treasure!

by happyinco on 8/6/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

Diana Krall is always a treat to listen to and the quality of her performance always delivers. Smoky, sexy voice and piano capabilites beyond compare. Humurous and personal dialogue makes you feel like you are the only for whom she is playing. How she does this and manages to survive raising a very young family is phenomenal, best wishes to her and her family! May she conntinue to bless us with her talents for a very long time! Very Very Satisfied in Colorado! Wish she lived here; we could hear her more.

  • Quiet Nights Very Captivating

by Rookieoftheyear on 8/5/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

Diana showed herself to be far more versatile than I thought. At this time I only have 4 of her albums, but will definatly get more. I was impressed with the whole group, all very talented. An hour and a half is entirely to short a time. It went by so fast.

  • Not what I expected....

    by Rocky505 on 8/4/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 3 out of 5

We drove 7 hrs to see this show and it did not live up to expectation. Only about 90 minutes of music with a trio backing Ms. Krall. There were no big favorites played. Great jokes and she certainly is very personable, but I expected more Diana Krall and at the quality of her recordings.

  • Krall good but not great

by Northwest on 8/4/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

It was clear that she is still sick. Her voice was weak from time to time and she was clearly having difficulty with the altitude. She and her band are clearly great, great musicians. The selections of songs were good. Enjoyed the show but would have liked to have seen her when she is feeling better.

  • KRALL CONCERT IN DENVER

by Ignat on 8/4/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

The concert was very good. This was my first time seeing Diana. Her playing and personality on stage was accomplished and fun. The band members were also very good players and provided a good background for her piano. The solos by all were extremely enjoyable. The venue, Wells Fargo Theater was also a great place for her music which can be very quiet at times. I could hear the drummer rubbing his sticks together to create a sanding type effect during his solo. It showed how good the venue could be for a band that has silences throughout a song. My only negative comment is that they did not play long enough; only about 90 minutes. The show started a bit late as well. As expensive as the tickets were $145, 2 hours should have been the minimum.

  • a tad disappointing

by SundieLynn on 8/4/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

we sat in the 11th row but she had her back to us the entire time.... need to position the band better so she can give all sides more face time.

  • Diana Krall is funny besides extremely talented!

    by pinello123 on 8/4/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

It was a LOT of talent for one stage. The sound quality was great, the performance beyond memorable, and a few giggles for added fun. Be forwarned if you are going with someone with limited mobility. this venue is not good for that!!!!

  • Diana Krall.. disappointed

    by Pater2 on 8/4/09Wells Fargo Theatre - DenverRating: 1 out of 5

After paying over $200 for " good seats ", the sound was horrible. Maybe the venue was too large or the soundman was inexperienced. I will still buy her DVD's and CD's, but never a live venue such as this one.
