DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT
Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.
Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).
Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

I have admired Diana Krall's voice and talent for so long and was so excited to finally see her perform live. She did not disappoint! She performed many of my favorite songs--how can you choose?! Her voice was beautiful...as was she and her musicians were so talented and complemented her abilities as well. Add the SF symphony group and WOW--Truly amazing in my book. I would definitely want to see her again.
To be able to watch her fingers dance lightly on the keys and to hear her exquisite voice was such a wonderful experience. She has a light touch--on the piano, in her voice and articulation, even her humor. The musicians were fantastic and the orchestra added depth. The musical choices were grand. Truly a night like no other.
This was a "Jazz at the Philharmonic" type concert: A great Jazz rhythm section (guitar, piano, drums, bass) combined with big orchestra (strings, woodwinds, winds). The repertoire was mostly standards from the Great American Songbook (Girl From Ipanema, I Get Along Without You, 'Deed I Do). One exception was a Tom Waits tune (sorry, I didn't catch the title of the tune). Many of the big orchestra arrangements were done by the great Claus Ogermann and sounded fantastic in the big room. The performance went on for more over 1.5 hours.
Ms. Krall was even better than last time. She played a wonderful mix of music that included Peggy Lee songs, Nat King Cole, Irving Berlin, Carlos Jobim and more! Her trio of talented musicians was on fire and earned well deserved applause. She also had a full orchestra that added tremendously to the sound -- the beautiful sound. She played for two full hours and seemed to gain in energy as she went along. I am always impressed by her voice, but her piano playing last night was a real revelation. Anyone who likes jazz, has to see her someday. She is such an all-around talent and that made for a marvelously fantastic evening. There are not enough superlatives to capture the fun and pleasure of the concert: everyone should see and hear her in person.
Besides playing a wonderful venue, she rocked the stage. She is just as beautiful on the cover as in person. Love the shoes.
Diana Krall was an unexpected hit at Symphony Hall last night. She played for 2+ hours with out a break and had us all on our feet by the end. The combo that backs her up on the piano is incredibly talented. We could see her fingers gently tickling the keys of the piano as the drummer, basist, and guitar combo played with pure excellence. Behind them was the orchestra that supplied the soft sounds just when she needed them. I highly recommend this concert she is a joy to listen to even when she is not singing.
I had heard about Diana Krall for many years, but have only one CD - an early one where she sings, mostly just with piano, her own songs. OK, but didn't knock me out. But I decided to go to Davies Hall to hear what all the fuss is about, and to find out if Diana had progressed... Wow! It is a whole different shtick. She has morphed into a jazz musician extraordinaire, with an amazing quartet and the SF Symphony orchestra! There is no denying the talent of this woman and her ability to interpret the old standards in an original and yet accessible way. And she really knows how to connect with the audience between songs with anecdotes and wry humor, and, I think, genuine gratitude. I guess I'm just not a true jazz devotee, however. I have never enjoyed long instrumental solos off of standards. While it showcases musical skills, it never touches me. When Diana sang Quiet Nights, and Accustomed to Her Face, without all the faldoral, I was deeply moved. I wanted more of that emotional authenticity. But that's just me. A great show, in any case. Kudos to Diana and the gang.
Diana Krall was perfect. The big orchestra and her band were the icing on the cake.
great backups, great piano playing and she was very personable. Really lovely show. Enjoyed it very much
One hard-working, piano-jamming girlie!! She could have just kept playing all night--and her back-up musicians were right there with her, they were great, also.
The music, the voice, the ambiance were all excellent. What wasn't was the excessive talking in the audience.
Venue is a beautiful place but the seats are extremely small (even for a 5'-7", 118 lb. person) and packed together like sardines. Her concert was too much instrumentals for my taste. Diana Krall has such an extrordinary voice and that's what we came to see. We were disappointed in the format.
Awesome performance at an awesome venue. If you haven't seen a show at Humphrey's by the Bay, you need to - it's outstanding!
Diana Krall is not only an exceptional singing talent, but I had know idea how good she is on the piano. One of the best live performances that I have ever seen. Top notch!
My hubby and I had a very relaxing evening with Diana and her 3 band members. The bassist was awesome, but they all were.
We saw Diana in the parking lot when she arrived and seeing her carrying her little one just added that much more to the experience. She is truly a gifted performer and we enjoyed every minute of the show. My foot never stopped tapping. The energy was really high and she really put her all into the performance.
How can you catch a shining star? Wonderful.....Wonderful
Diana Krall's virtuoso piano performance is complemented by her fabulously sultry voice. Wish I had recordings of this type of live performance. Her guitarist, bass player, and drummer are all also fantastic. Could listen to her forever!
First, I'm a big fan of Diana Krall , loved the music and the performers but the venue was the worst I've been at for the jazz format. Very poor sound reproduction and seating "for the price" was substandard. Sittting next to the air conditioner didn't help much eather. Any concert promoter who places seating in a place with no listening ability just to fill a seat for an over priced chair should not be touted as a prime venue. I'll never attend there again
