DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.

Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

  • Virtuoso piano playing and soulful singing

by vanthemanfan on 8/13/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

The whole evening was full of remarkable musicianship by Krall and her tight band of electric guitar, standup bass, and drums. Having the SF Symphony backing her up added layers of complexity and fullness. Many highlights, but I just loved Bacharach's Walk On By, and Krall oozing sensuality with Do It Again and Boy from Ipanema.

  • Diana Krall smokin the piano

by jwurten on 8/13/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

A group of friends and I saw Diana up at Davies Symphony Hall last night. I've seen her about 8 times prior to this and have always enjoyed her performances. This was the best I have ever seen. She was much more talkative than usual and kept on saying how much she loves playing in S.F. The trio was on fire and the small symphony that supported her just elevated the experience. I will be seeing her next week at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga. It will be interesting to see if she can match last nights performance. Thanks, Diana!

  • DIANA KRALL HAS SOLD OUT

    by CURTIS12 on 8/13/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 1 out of 5

I've been seeing Diana Krall concerts since 1998 at the Monterey Jazz Festival. This recent concert at Davies will be my last. The heat was unbearable. People were sitting there with fans and taking off their jackets and rolling up their sleeves. This on a night when it was 63 degrees outside. She was 20 minutes late. The sound quality was poor. She has some kind of policy where you can't buy decent seats unless you get them from a scalper. I bought my seats for $90 each the moment they went on sale and was in the upper deck. Ms. Krall has failed to update her act. Instead of working on new arrangements while sticking with her breathy singing style, she now relies on an orchestra. Her side men, execept for the excellent Jeff Hamilton, have become a revolving door. Basically, she can no longer be regarded as a serious jazz musician. It's very disappointing to see this from the person who brought us Love Scenes and All For You.

  • Great Piano - poor entertainment

    by gtucker86 on 8/13/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

Diana Krall is a masterful jazz pianist. Mastery of the keyboard, great timing and touch, perfect synch with her trio of musicians. If all you do is listen to the piano and watch her mastery of it, you will be blown away. Vocals - not so much. Very breathy - if that is what you like, you will be fine. Not for me. As for her connection with the audience and the SF symphony - cold. After watching Chris Botti last month in the same venue with the same orchestra, Diana has a lot to learn about entertaining, vs. playing. Overall a good night, but could have been memorable.

  • Disappointing first Diana concert

by DisappointedinPTown on 8/13/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

I have been a big fan of Diana's music for a long time. While the auction got us great seats, the ticket price was a HUGE splurge. We have never seen her in concert and were really disappointed. While she is an awesome artist and an amazing pianist, her rapport with the audience seemed cold, aloof and distant. She seemed bored and we didn't sense much connection with the audience. She was totally into playing the piano and it was as though she had been forced to sing. We didn't sense much passion in her singing last night. Perhaps I should have done more research to see what kind of live performer she is, but, it sure was not what we expected. Anyone can spend $15 or less on a CD and enjoy an artist's music, but the real joy is seeing them perform live. Davies Hall is a wonderful venue and all the back up musicians were the best. All in all we did enjoy it, but I cannot say that I will spend money to see her live again. I will put on some CDs and save the bucks for other live performances where we feel the artist loves the audience as much as their art.

  • Diana Krall - better in smaller venue

by corgiman on 8/13/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

For someone who has been in the public eye for many years, Diana Krall is still very shy when it comes to interacting with her audience. The music is superb, if a bit on the savant side when she goes into one of her trances playing. Her voice is strong and in control as is her playing, which should be more appreciated. Davies is just too big a venue to properly appreciate her talent. A smaller club setting, like Yoshi's, would be a better place to see this great talent.

  • Diana Krall Davies Symphony Hall SF

by Zjazz on 8/13/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Jazzy smoothe deliciousness. Liquid velvet singing and piano playing. Her band is truly transcendent.

  • Good, Smooth, Polished

by Herbandjan on 8/13/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

Diana's got a slick show, well-rehearsed and flawless. Amazing that she can do these one-night stands in so many vanues without burning out. Her piano was excellent, and her voice was good for the sort of sultry, moody/bosso things she does best. The 60-piece studio orchestra was elegant, and no doubt expensive. However, all that practiced smoothness prevented much genuine audience rapport. Also, though she mentioned that Elvis was there at the concert, we didn't get a "hello" or nod from him, which would have been nice.

  • Absolutely fantastic venue

by GreekGod on 8/13/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

What a great evening of music created with the accoustics and talents of Diana and the combination of the symphony playing.

  • Diana Krall has an amazing voice

by davisfan on 8/13/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

Diana Krall has an amazing voice and is one of the most humble performers I've seen. Her piano-playing skills, something I didn't realize from listening to her CDs, made the show unforgettable.

  • Diana Krall was stupendous as expected!

by DWalden on 8/13/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Diana Krall and Davies Symphony Hall are quite a pair. Diana was wonderful and surprisingly quite talkative last night in San Francisco. Her performance was well produced and flowed beautifully. She talked about her family and how much she loved having them in the City with her. At times it seemed like she just wanted to play forever. I have seen her perform before but last night her fingers just flowed on the piano giving us much more than her normal hits. She seemed to feel at home in the city by the bay. She was such a hit she got two well deserved standing ovations. I have seen her at Mountain Winery and, to my thinking, Davies with the orchestra behind her complements her style much better.

  • great show

  • Diana Krall is amazing!!

by AKayO on 8/13/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

I have to admit that I purchased these tickets because my partner is absolutely in love with her music. So, I was more excited to take her. But, after watching and listening to Ms. Krall, I have a huge love and admiration for her. The way she plays the piano and sings is totally effortless. I was in awe watching her and would definitely go see her again.

  • Diana Krall was breathtaking

by bigskydreams on 8/13/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Ms. Krall is a beautiful artist and the symphony hall is the perfect place to enjoy her fabulous voice, her playing and her exceptional band. Backed by the SF symphony, the gorgeous venue, lighting and sound it was a once in a lifetime experience!

  • Diana Krall is awesome!

by AmyCNM on 8/13/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

What an incredible evening! Backed by both San Francisco orchestra musicians and her own ensemble, Diana proved she is an artist of impeccable range and skill.

  • great voice, great chops, great venue

by newking on 8/13/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Saw Diana Krall at Davies Symphony hall - unbelievable. Playing with 4-piece core band, and backed by SF mini-symphony group. Her voice had great range and emotional presence. Keyboard playing marvelous. Unexpected personal touch with audience. You need to see her on this tour

  • Diana Krall is smooth and seductive

by chipmunkie on 8/13/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

It's rare that you can find a talent whose voice sounds even better live. In a world of overproduced singers, Diana Krall's clear, deep, rich, concise voice fills the room and makes you feel like you're listening to a rare talent. A definite must for everyone who loves jazz/blues, and even those who just want to hear an amazing vocalist (with some fun piano skills to boot!)

  • Diana is spectacular!

by SGarland on 8/13/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen Diana play five times and she never disappoints. Last nights show was no exception. The show was well paced, and beautifully arranged. Using members of the symphony was an added bonus and helped bring out the lush sounds of the arrangements. Diana, and her trio were amazing as always, especially Anthony Hamilton. Diana, as always, was wearing the most fabulous shoes! If you haven't had a chance to see her, go as soon as you can! You can bet the next time she plays California I will be there.

  • Diana Krall was Amazing!!!

by springtulip on 8/13/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Diana Krall is the most wonderful pianist and vocalist we have heard in years. Her live performance was even better than her CD's!! Two hours of non-stop entertainment that is still playing in my head.

  • Diana Krall was AMAZING!!!

by LolaV on 8/13/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Diana's performance was AMAZING! We've ordered our tickets back in December and couldn't wait to see her. We wer not disappointed. I love her voice and her performance on the piano was outstanding. She is a talented entertainer! The perforamnce of her bass player, guitarist and drummer was great too!...and the symphony orchestra top it off! If we get a chance we'd check to see if we could get tickets for her other engagements throughout Northern California...Livermore...Ironstone Vineyards or Reno!
