DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.

Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

  • Diana Krall is an incredible talent! Piano&voice

    by Scott22G on 8/14/09Wente Vineyards - LivermoreRating: 5 out of 5

Although the night was a bit windy, Diana Krall was fantastic. Her mastery of the jazz piano is beyond question. Her sound system matched up with her wonderful voice in a way that made every word and note easy to understand and allowed the listener to appreciate the nuances of mixing sound. The back up band was also very talented and played as a perfect complement to each other. The only regret is that I would like to listen to them for the whole night. Thank you, Scott

  • It was a Quiet Night

by DiscoBabe on 8/14/09Wente Vineyards - LivermoreRating: 2 out of 5

Her voice and music are enjoyable but the energy of the concert was flat. Most Wente concerts are more lively. She would be better on a Sunday afternoon.

Fabulous. Even with wild winds and a chilly evening Diana was superb! Wente's spread was great as usual. An altogether terrific evening!

  • Great Diana Krall Concert!

    by jen94404 on 8/14/09Wente Vineyards - LivermoreRating: 4 out of 5

Diana Krall was awesome last night. I have always loved hearing her sing and play, but even more, I loved her personal stories about her twins, her husband, and the story about sitting on the chair lift and listening to people talk to her was hysterical! I have loved her musicianship and artistry for almost 15 years, but it's the personal touch she brings to live concerts that keeps me in awe of her. Without an opening act, her set of about an hour and fifteen minutes made the evening rather short (she loses 1/2 a star for that, so I would have given 4 1/2 instead of 4...but read on). I wish people in the audience would understand 2 things, though (which is why it's a 4-star instead of 4 1/2-star rating): 1, live concerts are not venues for karaoke. That's great if you know the song, but I didn't spend $100+/ticket to listen to you sing, I spent it to hear Diana Krall sing. 2, concerts are not a place for you to talk incessantly while the artist is performing. I don't show up at your place of business and talk and distract everyone around you while you are trying to work, so please don't do that to the artists on stage.

  • Quiet Nights was sulky, wonderful

by SistersL on 8/14/09Wente Vineyards - LivermoreRating: 4 out of 5

Diana did not disappoint. She has an amazing style--her hands have such a command of the piano--her voice, is almost the accompaniment. She was fun, relaxed and seemed to enjoy the beautiful Livermore Valley & starry skies around her. The only downside, is the concert was too short. she wrapped before 10 pm--wasn't even a two hour show, and the tix were not cheap..

Wonderful event and setting...Concert went quickly...Too bad too many shout outs for Elvis..Diana did a better job connecting with the audience...

  • Diana Krall was a great show

by philebang on 8/14/09Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort - Las VegasRating: 4 out of 5

Show was cool. Artist interacted nicely w/ the audience. The only problem was the crowd in Vegas constantly going in and out from the Pearl and disturbing the listening.

  • Windblown but nice

by Donspoint on 8/14/09Wente Vineyards - LivermoreRating: 4 out of 5

A very windy night at Wente but the music was excellent. Diana looked and sounded great! This is the second time I've seen her at Wente and both times, I wanted more by the time she was done. Also, some of my favorite songs that she does like "Let's Fall in Love" wasn't on the playlist.. The biggest disappointment were the seats themselves. We were in row 2 seats 39 & 40. Although these were the most expensive seats available, you couldn't see 3 of the 4 members of the band because of the acute angle and the structure facing the stage that is used to support the stage lighting.

  • Diana Krall owned the stage.........

    by ManhattanLady8 on 8/14/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

There was a group of us, that attended this concert, and Diana totally came through, her stage presence is incredible and all the songs were just great. We loved every moment and of course Davis Hall is the best venue............

  • Outstanding!! A Class Act!!

by Lukewarmwater on 8/13/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

This is the Tenth time I have seen Diana Krall, and I would have to say, she looks and sounds as good as she ever has. It was a real treat to hear Diana with a full orchestra at Davies Symphony Hall, and I had perfect seats. Diana idolized "Nat King Cole", and she said there were two Nat King Cole's, Nat King Cole the singer, and Nat King Cole the piano player. I would have to say the same is true for Diana, I enjoy listening to her piano playing as much as I do listening to her sing. It was a great night, and I am looking forward to my next ten shows!

  • A quiet Nite

A bit slow at the end but excellent over all. Love the humor between songs.

  • Diana Krall was simply amazing!

by Jtwigan on 8/13/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

She was a consummate entertainer and performed a wonderful variety of pieces. She is very dishy and was very relaxed with the audience. It was a simply marvelous evening.

  • Diana Krall is phenominal!

    by Karen100 on 8/13/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Diana Krall's live performance surpasses her recordings! Her sheer talent is mind boggling, her phrasing, expression and voice as she plays old and new jazz standards is unmatched. And her on-stage persona is charming- witty and fun and thoroughly entertaining. A definite must see/hear for any jazz enthusiast!

  • A wonderful evening

What a great artist and a great concert!! She brings out such emotion with such a simple presentation that it is hard to believe such a performer exists. She has a great style and is stunning to watch and to listen to. Highly recomended!!

I think she was amazing- great to see her live. I enjoyed the addition of the symphony to her quartet- loved the brazilian tunes and the Burt Bacharach. Wished she had done more improvisation, however, showing more of her creativity.

  • Diana Krall knows her music

by Suzzzanne on 8/13/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

Diana is a real musician and her back up group was fabulous. She is a true jazz piano player and has a lovely voice...I kept thinking about Shirley Horn. It was a fine concert.

  • Great Show!

by Drassoc on 8/13/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

We had a great time, Diana seemed a little tired and put on a great performance, her band was wonderful and so was the orchestra. Our seats were perfect and the experience was memorable.

Fabulously talented performer; consumate musician along with her amazing accompanying musicians. Over 2 hours of straight, wonderful performance with no intermission. A wonderful and intense musical experience.

  • Diana was outstanding

by JFred on 8/13/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

The sound system was somewhat poor. Diana's microphone had poor quailty and therefore I could not hear all of her comments

  • Diana Krall - what a talent!

by Arebe on 8/13/09Davies Hall - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

Diana is just fantastic. The music and singing was wonderful - jazz takes on Gershwin? Yes and outstanding! Piano playing from a true modern master - I loved her one handed playing while she sang - very cool. She was, as always, just simply perfect and wonderful. The only criticism I have is that I found the acoustics and tone of the music / room was off a bit. It was a bit too shrill and sharp for my liking - perhaps it could have been mixed a bit softer. Other than that - go see her, wherever she is!
